Responsibilities of Individual Board Members
Attend board meetings, committee meetings, training sessions and special meetings
Understand the YMCA Youth and Government mission, goals, objectives, programs and functioning – and believe in it
Make decisions on issues, policies, goals and objectives based on careful consideration of facts and all relevant data
Participate fully and openly in meetings
Stay informed, ask questions/request information
Provide counsel
Give of time, money and expertise as appropriate
Invite others to give, participate in campaigns and help “open doors” for funding
Recruit other volunteers, both policy and program volunteers
Serve on committees and accept special assignments as appropriate
Interpret the YMCA Youth and Government to the community

Planning and Policy Decisions
Setting the YMCA Youth and Government direction (mission, goals and objectives); establishing policies to guide the operation of the agency.
Financial Development
Responsibility for funding the planning and policy decisions and for ensuring that the YMCA Youth and Government is adequately financed.
Monitoring and Sanction
Monitoring the implementation of planning and policy decisions to ensure the achievement of goals and objectives; providing sanction, enthusiastic endorsement and approval of the YMCA Youth and Government throughout the state.
Note:
In carrying out its role, the board is accountable to the community for the quality and relevance of programs and services and for dollars spent by budgetary techniques.
YMCA Youth and Government Board of Directors Collective Responsibilities
1. Formulate, approve and monitor long-range goals and objectives.
2. Formulate and adopt policies.
3. Develop financial resources for achieving goals – long-term financial development strategy.
4. Adopt and monitor the operating budget, financial development plan and risk management program.
5. Perform legal responsibilities. Ensure legal and ethical integrity and maintain accountability.
6. Protect the assets of the YMCA Youth and Government program.
7. Form linkages and partnerships with YMCA’s, educational institutions and other community organizations.
8. Interpret the YMCA Youth and Government to communities throughout the state of Washington.
