Water Aerobics
Catch the rays, the laughs, and the good feeling that comes from a vigorous low-impact workout in a fun setting. Toss off your inhibitions and dive into this perennial favorite of Open U students, taught by popular instructor Joyce Graham-Surface. A certified water and land personal trainer, Joyce has 10 years of professional experience as well as
special training from the Arthritis Foundation. You do not need to be a member of the Shawnee Pool to attend classes.
All 30 classes - $165 (5.50 per session)

Belly Dance - Level 1
This class is an introduction into the theory, style, and fundamental moves used in belly dance. Participants will learn slow, smooth moves as well as fast, rhythmic isolations that will help improve flexibility, strength, coordination, body awareness and confidence - all while dancing and having fun! Students should bring a bright hip scarf, if possible.  Taught by Jennifer Speiden.  $50

Hatha Yoga
A yoga class for any level, but particularly suited to beginners. Hatha yoga follows the ancient tradition of yoga as a slow, meditative "dance" to facilitate health in the body, mind, and spirit. This class will incorporate toning and focusing on every part of the body in order to prepare the body for meditation. Anyone who has been curious about yoga should try this class, as each person performs at their own individual level and there is no pressure to perform.  Taught by Certified Yoga Instructor Doug Chancey. $50

Lunchtime Yoga
This Kripalu yoga class will blend learning basic postures with awareness on alignment, breath, and deep relaxation with a progression into moderately advanced standing and sitting poses and backbends. We will develop an awareness of synchronization of breath with movement.  The classes will end with 15 minutes of conscious relaxation (Shavasana).  Noelle Dijoud graduated from the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health in Lenox, MA in 1994. $50

Pilates Yoga Mix
A Pilates and Yoga based class for those wishing to refresh the body and relax the mind. In this class, we will work on building core stability, improving posture, increasing flexibility and becoming more aware of the power of moving with the breath.  Participants will work to develop an increased body awareness and flexible strength, which can reduce stress, tension, pain and injury on many levels.  This is a multi-level class that is accessible to beginners as well as more experienced students.  $50

Stretching Your Income in a Tight Economy

Turkish Language and Culture
This class will build on everyday conversation skills in the Turkish language, moving on to more advanced subjects involving grammar and vocabulary.  Students will also learn about the influences that have shaped the Turkish culture, including geography, foods, and the lifestyle of the people.  Instructor Pinar Gurdal has been teaching for several years both for Open University and the English Language Institute.  $50

Advanced Investing Strategies - Understanding the New 403B
Virginia Tech offers 403B benefits from some of the top programs in the country. Choosing which one of these programs is right for you can be difficult. The independent financial team of Joel S. Williams | Alliance of Wealth Advisors will provide information on the distinctions between the programs offered. The evening’s presentation will also include specific strategies that can make a difference in the performance of any investor’s portfolio. Expertise, knowledge and experience are what the JSW team will bring to this workshop. A 15-20 minute individual Q/A period will be offered at the end of the workshop. Required Disclosure: Securities offered through VSR Financial Services, Inc., member FINRA/SIPC. $10 is requested to attend and will be provided in full as a donation to the YMCA.

Women's Body Toning
This class is specifically designed to tone, shape, and strengthen various body parts. Care will be taken to work on the tummy, thighs, butt, arms and more. Muscles are defined without adding bulk. Join certified aerobics instructor Hila Gur-Yaary for this fun, energetic class. Classes meet at the Y Center. $40 for 8 classes; $25 for four classes.

Hoop Dance Level 1
Hoop Dance Level I is an introductory class series designed to teach the basics of hoop dance.  Instructor Becca Imbur will guide students to focus on strengthening the core as well as mastering moves on the waist, chest, hips and hands.  Participants will learn dance combos that will allow for further exploration of this unique dance.  The small class size allows ample time for one-on-one instruction.  For more information about hoop dance, please visit www.wildearthhoops.com.  $60

Batik Basics
Students will learn basic batik techniques by applying molten wax with a tjjuning tool to fabric and then dying their fabric. Successive wax layers and dye baths will create unique colorful images. There will be various fabric and dye options. Students will have the opportunity to explore the chemical reactions of the dye process. Students will work towards making a wall hanging. $67 (includes all supplies)

Zumba
Zumba fuses hypnotic Latin rhythms and easy to follow moves to create a dynamic workout system that will blow you away. The name Zumba is derived from a Colombian word meaning to move fast and have fun. Join Steven Trotter, a certified fitness instructor, as he leads you in this fun, enjoyable class that will have you moving to the music until you're sweating off the pounds. $40 for eight classes; $25 for four classes.

Beginning Taiji
This course is open to all levels and will focus on the foundations of Taiji (also known as Tai Chi) mind-body training through simple static postures, silk reeling energy work, taiji walking, and gentle partner training.  The reported benefits of regular training in these exercises includes improvements in strength, and balance, as well as added resilience to stress and disease.  Taught by Matthew Komelski.  $60

Taiji Form and Weapons
This session will focus on Chen style Taiji Saber.  The choreography is similar to that shown here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G5p0GSrt_h0. This class is open to those with prior experience in taiji, martial arts, dance, or other activities that involve complex choreography.  Those without prior experience should consider enrolling in the Taiji Silk Reeling, Qigong, and Partner Training for one or more sessions.   $80

Basic Step Aerobics
Stepping incorporates a low impact workout that delivers an overall leaner body while targeting a healthier heart. Cardiovascular Intervals on and off the step are incorporated into routines.  This is a fun and effective workout for all fitness levels. $40
