Welcome to the Y International Program!
  • Designed for Americans & Internationals living in the New River Valley.
  • Provides an opportunity to meet Americans.
  • Chance to learn about life in our community.
  • Opportunities to learn about U.S. culture.
  • All religions and nationalities are welcome; this program has no religious affiliation.
  • All International Programs are free of charge and provide free child care/nursery.  
"Mornings" Program
Welcomes YOU!!
  • "Mornings" meets weekly on Wednesdays to bring international people and Americans together for friendship and support.  

     
  • "Mornings" is free and registration is not required. Children are welcome and child care/nursery is provided.

    At "Mornings" you can:

  • Practice and Improve your English.
  • Learn about American culture and customs. 
  • Meet Families from around the world and learn about their culture.
  • Ask questions and get help in finding your way around town.
    Enjoy new friendships.   

Where: Fellowship Hall at Luther Memorial Lutheran Church. Corner of Toms Creek and Prices Fork Roads.
When: Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

September

 10th  Community Resources. Where to shop, how to use the bus, the best parks and much more.

 17th  Gardens and Games. We will discuss gardening traditions from around the world and enjoy  time outside playing games.

24th  What to do in an Emergency. Special guests from the Virginia Tech Rescue Squad will answer questions related to getting assistance in times of need.

October

1st Traditions: We will used this time to discuss traditions from different cultures.

8th  Apple Pies: Join us for this yearly tradition where we bake this yummy dessert! 

15th Politics: Come learn about the democratic process and  discuss political processes from around the world.

22nd  Reuse and Recycle:  In recognition of sustainability week, we will engage in activities and  discussions that focus on protecting the environment. 

 29th Superstition - Fairy Tales- Gory Stories– Legends. Learn about Halloween and share some spooky stories from your countries while we carve pumpkins. 

 
 English Conversation Classes

These weekly classes are for Internationals who
want to learn English or improve their English language skills. Besides
having conversations
on diverse topics, simple writing tasks, pronunciation and grammar will also be taught.

Children are welcome!
Child care/nursery is provided.

Movie Club is Discontinued

(may resume in the Spring)

The Movie Club meets every other Friday at 10:00 am. We will show a selection of American and International films. A discussion will follow.  Please join us at the Cranwell International Center (behind the tennis courts on Washington Street)! Children are welcome!

Visit the YMCA Thrift Shop now at 1000 North Main Street, Blacksburg, (bus stop just past Progress Street going north). We have moved into our new, beautifully renovated Y Center.

 
 

 

 Volunteer! It's Fun!   

  • A variety of opportunities are available for volunteers, including tutoring in English, presenting a program or craft, sharing a slide show, or just offering your friendship.
  • Volunteer schedules are very flexible and can be fit to your preference.
