Fall Mountain Special Olympics was
founded in 1994 by Rosie Pelletier. It was Rosie's dream to build a
team comprised of local athletes who were not able to participate in
typical recreational sports; to provide them opportunities to compete
with dignity and respect in a way that was safe but still competitive.
Thirteen years later FMSO is still active and rebuilding a new team of
athletes. Although they are two separate organizations, they have much
in common, so FMSO has to a certain extent become part of TRAIL. A key difference is that Special Olympics is competitive in nature, whereas TRAIL
focuses on individual skill development in an non-competitive format.
Both organizations were created to help people with intellectual and
physical disabilities develop self-confidence, social skills and a
sense of personal accomplishment.
