Search Engine Optimization Continued - Part 2

Eight Steps To Search Engine Marketing

Step One: ONSITE Basics - Research!

Research effective keyword phrases.
Many business people get their hearts set on a pet keyword phrase....without doing any research about whether it is an effective search engine keyword phrase to target! Generally, an effective keyword phrase is one that

a) many people search for
b) has a low amount of competition, and
c) fits your specialized business niche.

For example, consider the phrase...office furniture. This is a highly competitive phrase. On June 7, 2006, this keyword phrase yielded over 101,000,000 competitive pages at Google. And further research reveals that this phrase received 3,654 searches since April 8, 2006.

So if your goal is to target the phrase “office furniture”, you need to be realistic. You are facing enormous search engine competition to gain about 60 daily visitors.

Google Ranking

Given this low competition/search ratio, a smart marketer will research more highly niched phrases that will net a better return.

For example, the search phrase “used office furniture texas” yields 12,200 competing sites: and 408 searches in a 60 day period.

Less traffic; but also less competition. Research shows that the long tail of search keywords yield a better conversion to sales. Think of it this way: if you are selling car parts on your site, would you rather have a visitor come to your site who is looking for "car parts" or for the search term "2003 Honda Accord Main Relay"? The term "car parts" may generate more traffic, but it is traffic that is less likely to convert to a sale than a very specific search term.

Bottom line...Research your niche market and tightly target your keyword phrases. You will want to get traffic from hundreds or thousands of search terms, not just a few.

Two incredibly helpful, do-it-yourself online research tools:

Wordtracker – You can test drive their free keyword effectiveness tool, or you can buy a day pass (less than $9 US) to conduct more thorough search engine research. The paid program even helps you brainstorm keyword phrases that you might not otherwise consider.

Google Trends – New from Google Labs, this online research tool lets you enter keyword phrases so that you can better understand their seasonal popularity (i.e., searches for “tulip festival” peak in the spring, and decline during the other seasons). You will also gain a better understanding of your markets: the free tool also reports the top ten cities, regions, and languages for your search phase. Further, you'll see how breaking news stories might affect search trends for your keyword term.

Step Two: ONSITE Basics - Write!

Write
useful, information-rich content.
Most of your prospects who are entering keyword phrases in the search engines are looking for information. If you want to earn a top search engine ranking, your goal is to provide plenty of useful, well-written content.

Notice the emphasis on “written”. Search engines cannot read the text that is embedded in images or Flash. If your site has a dearth of written content, you are invisible to the search engines. And notice the emphasis on “information-rich” -- search engines like to see hundreds of pages of highly organized, themed content about your particular topic of expertise.

Here are four of the most important basic writing tips to attract search engines (and customers!):

Write plenty of thoughtful 100-1,500 word articles about the keyword phrases you have researched. Be sure to effectively use these keywords on your web pages. No garbage, please! Simply repeating keyword phrases a few hundred times on one page to try to trick the engines is likely to get a site banned altogether....and prospects hate being tricked into visiting a low
quality, low-information page, as well.

Make sure your title and meta tags reflect the content of your page. Keep your title tags (in your page header) short, descriptive, and snappy....after all, the title tag is what a searcher will click to come to your site. And many search engines will use the keyword meta tag description as the subhead in the link. This means developing short, keyword rich titles for
every page in your website.

As a rule of thumb, don't use more than eight words in your title or meta tags. Keyword stuffing your meta tags with hundreds of phrases does not fool the search engines...nor does it accurately and honestly describe the content of your pages.

Many webmasters simply use their company name or the same title for every page in their site. Not only does this lazy approach to marketing negatively effect search engine ranking, but it also inhibits the click-through rate.

Think about it: why would a searcher click on a company name? If a searcher is looking for, say “golf PowerPoint templates” -- they are more likely to click on a title that says “golf PowerPoint templates” than a site that says “Maniactive” (see Image below).
Give your keywords prominence. Keyword prominence is an important search engine optimization factor. This means using your keyword phrases at the top of the page, as well as in headlines and subheads. Think of your keyword phrases as the “lead” in your article.  Don't bury the lead a few hundred words into your article...your first few sentences should
contain your keyword phrase at least once...and should also be in your headlines, titles, meta tags, and title.

Supply descriptive alt tags.
An alt tag provides alternative text for people...and search engines...that cannot see your site's graphics. Search engines do not “see” graphics...but they CAN read a graphic's alt tag. Write a few words in your alt tags to describe your graphics.

Consider blogging. Blogging lets you quickly and easily post written content to your website. Blogs also give you a whole host of other business and marketing benefits -- you can learn more about blogging for business elsewhere on this site.

Step Three: ONSITE Basics - Navigation!

Provide clear navigation.
The big three engines -- Google, Yahoo, and MSN -- all send out spiders that crawl the web. A spider is a program that visits Web sites and reads their pages to create entries for the search engine index.

You need to provide a clean, clear, easy navigation path for the search engine spiders to follow.

And wouldn't you know it: your customers like clean, clear navigation, too!

Here are two top tips for providing the kind of navigation that search engines...and people...seem to love.

Create a site with a clear, horizontal hierarchy and text links. Every page in your site needs to be reachable from at least one static text link. Don't believe it? Read what Google has to say about site navigation at the Google Webmaster Guidelines.

Offer a site map. Make a site map with text links to your site's most important pages. If the site map has more than 100 links, break the site map into several pages. Sitemapdoc offers a free tool that can help you quickly generate a map for a site with less than 750 pages.

Step Four: ONSITE Basics - What to Avoid!

ONSITE factors to avoid.
To earn good ranking at the search engines, you will want to follow Google's quality guidelines. This is a comprehensive list of not only "what to do" but also “what to avoid”. And while this list is posted by Google, these quality guidelines hold true for the other engines, as well.

Remember, your goal is to build a quality site. Avoid garbage content, keyword stuffing, designing without text and words, and a whole host of other factors that make your site unattractive to the search engines.

For example, many search engines have trouble indexing dynamically generated pages – pages with “&” and "&id="in the URL bar. If you use dynamically generated pages or a content management system, make sure you export your content to static html pages that the search engines favor.

Step Five: OFFSITE Basics - Link Quantity!

Note:
The first four ONSITE factors are critical for search engine ranking: but OFFSITE factors are increasingly important in 2006. The most indispensable OFFSITE factor is inbound links: how many other sites link in to your site? And what is the perceived quality of these sites?

Your best OFFSITE strategy: earn the interest and respect of high quality sites...so that they will link to your site. Notice that focus on the word “earn” again: if you continually work on your ONSITE factors – you are already on your way to attracting interest and attention.

Check the QUANTITY of sites that link to your site. To check to see who is linking to you, Marketleap provides a free online tool that lets you see how many sites each of the top three search engines see as linked in to your site. You can see at a glance how you stack up against your competitors...as well as drill down and find out exactly who is linking to you.

Marketleap provides useful information, and you can use it in a number of creative ways. For example, if you see that a site is linked to your competitors' sites, but not to yours – you can evaluate whether it is appropriate to pursue the site's webmaster and request that he/she link to your site, as well. If the site has negative things to say about you, you will want to decide how to handle fallout from bad publicity. And if the site says wonderful things about you, it may be worthwhile to write a thank you note and pursue a marketing relationship with the writer.

Press Release Makeover: 4 Tips for Online Marketing Success

Back in the 1980's, we used to write press releases for the press.  And we used to write 'em only when we wanted to get coverage of significant company news. Those days are gone forever.

After all, your buyers are on the internet, reading your press releases directly. They use free online tools like Google Alerts, Bloglines, and Technorati to get instant updates any time your company, product, or industry might be mentioned. And bloggers scoop MSM (main stream media) reporters on breaking stories all the time. Today, successful press releases speak directly to your target audience -- and indirectly to search engines and bloggers. (And oh yeah -- sometimes the main stream media, too!)

If you're still writing primarily for the MSM, it's time for a total press release makeover. Here are four top tips for making over your press releases to meet 21st century marketing practices:

1. Write and distribute press releases with your real audience in mind. Media is decentralized. You're not a giant corporation pitching to a giant media outlet anymore. You're a human being telling your story directly to your best customers. And your goal is to make it as easy as possible for your fan base to spread your ideas for you. If you're still using industry jargon and corporate-speak because you think it sounds impressive, you'd better stop. Even if you're a giant corporation, it's time to adopt a more personal tone. The mumbo-jumbo of passive voice and lofty but meaningless words only makes your audience roll their eyes before they stop paying attention to you altogether.

2. Write and distribute regularly. You don't need to have monumental news to write and distribute a press release. Getting the word out on smaller events or achievements can help you build an online conversation with your customer base. If you're speaking at a conference, publishing a white paper, coming out with a new product feature, revealing the results of an online poll -- you can write and distribute a winning press release. Will it get picked up by the MSM? Maybe. Maybe not. The MSM is listening in on your conversation, so they might pick it up. But that's not the point. The point is to regularly communicate and spread your ideas, features, and benefits to your real audience.

3. Write and distribute with search engines in mind. When you write and distribute a press release, use keyword rich copy. And optimize your press release for search by distributing press releases through a service like PRWeb or Marketwire. These services offer inexpensive options that let you syndicate your keyword-dense content on Google News, Yahoo News, Topix, and other popular online news and idea-spreaders. And since inbound links from reputable sites are important for great search engine positioning, regular press releases with keyword rich content can help boost your site in search rankings.

4. Post your own press releases. You have a website: use it to post news about your company. Posting your own releases lets your audience get to know what's important at your organization. It gives the media an opportunity to review your ongoing stories. Plus, keeping your site current shows that your company is active and thriving.

Usability What Every Online Business Must Know

Design your site with usability in mind.

Yeah, it’s important! Following research-based web usability guidelines can dramatically increase your online sales or improve conversion rates for other business goals (like increasing lead generation or e-news readership).

Anyone who is responsible for the design or business strategy for a commercial website absolutely must understand the importance of usability.

If you are new to the term web usability, its time to learn a new term.  Here are three links every online business person should click upon right away:

  1. Jakob Nielsen provides you with Usability 101 — the What, Why, and How of Usability. Read it, know it, practice it. It really is invaluable information. Like I said, you can significantly improve your business goals by following usability best practices.
  2. In his recent, easy-to-understand article, Philipp Lenssen patiently describes the difference between usability, approachability, and accessibility. Good stuff to know.
  3. The US Department of Health and Human Services Research provides a free download page of its 18 chapters of Research-Based Web Design and Usability Guidelines. (One of the chapters covers accessibility.) Note that the title says “Research Based“. These guidelines are not opinion — so even if you are not developing a site for the Federal Government, the content in these pages can give you sharp insights on how to develop a more user-friendly website.

In his latest AlertBox, Nielson gives us even more compelling information on how usability can impact your ROI.

Given all the compelling evidence for usability and the utter wealth of invaluable free research-based guidelines for making improvments, how can you make your site more usable this year?

Step Six: OFFSITE Basics - Link Quality!

Evaluate the QUALITY of the website that is linking to yours.
The quality of inbound links to your site is much more important than quantity. Here are your three basic quality checks:

a. PR – PR used to stand for “Public Relations”...but in the world of search engine marketing, it stands for “Page Rank”. Devised by Google, Page Rank measures not only the quantity of links pointing to a website, but the perceived "quality" of the page. Google Page Rank uses a scale of 0-10: 0 is an “invisible” or “low-quality” site, and “10” is a highly visible, high-quality site. To find out a site's PR, you can use the free online tool at SearchEngineEngine.com – or you can install the free Google Toolbar, which shows approximate PR of every site you visit.

b. Alexa - To find out how popular a website is, go to alexa.com. Here, you can enter the URL of any website; or you can install the Alexa toolbar directly onto your browser. Alexa ranks a site from 1 to as many sites millions. The lower the Alexa ranking number, the more popular the site. Alexa isn't entirely accurate, because it relies on statistical sampling that isn't random. But while Alexa is not perfect, it is a quick gut check on a site's popularity and quality.

c. Your own eyes. Peruse a site, and you'll get a good sense of its quality. Do the pages follow the ONSITE guidelines? If the answer is yes – even though the PR and Alexa ranking may be low -- realize that it may not be low for long. A high-quality site will eventually gain search engine attention.

Step Seven: OFFSITE Basics - Earn Inbound Links!

Work for High Quality, In Bound Links to your Site.
If you have a high quality site, chances are, many other sites link in to you already. But if you have a new site, or have only recently applied the quality guidelines, you may not have many links coming in to your site. Here's how to work smart to earn high-quality inbound links to your site:

a. PR
– In this instance, PR means good old-fashioned “Public Relations”. Get online and offline media coverage, and always promote your website. Write press releases and distribute them on search engine friendly news distribution services like PRLeap, PRNewswire, or MarketWire. News sites are often high-quality, high-traffic sites: and it is well worth it to get good press, regardless of its search engine value.

b. Directories – Submit your high quality site to high-quality directories. The granddaddy of all directories is the Open Directory Project – and submitting your site here is the best place to start. Be careful with other directories – check them for quality before you start submitting. You don't want to waste your time submitting to low quality sites.

c. Distribute articles
. Often, niche websites are looking for high-quality content from good authors. Offer to write an article, report, or position paper for a website where you want to be featured. Ask for a byline, a short bio, and a link back to your site.

d. Comment on blogs and editorial sites.
Subscribe to quality blogs that you enjoy reading and that complement your own
site's offerings. Post thoughtful comments, and if appropriate, use the opportunity to link back to a relevant page on your own site.

Important Inbound Link Strategy Tip

Use appropriate keywords in your anchor text. Anchor text is the set of word you request for the hyperlinks back to your site. For example: http://www.maniactive.com/powerpoi.htm and "Free PowerPoint Templates" both point to the same page on the same site, but one uses a descriptive keyword phrase to accurately describe the page's content for the user. Search engine spiders also use anchor text as one of the key factors that determines your site's placement at the engines. As you develop your inbound link strategy, brainstorm a set of keyword phrases you will want to use as your anchor text.

Free Online Tool: The Backlink Anchor Text Analyzer - Which sites are pointing to you right now....and what anchor text are they using? Find out by using this free online research tool, the Backlink Anchor Text Analyzer -- and find out what kinds of keyword phrases that sites are using to link back to your site. In some cases, you may be in a strong position to write to the webmasters and request that they use your preferred anchor text to link back to you.

How anchor text can help (or hurt)  - In some cases, a significant amount of inbound links that contain the same anchor text can get your site to the top of the engines for this phrase....even if the inbound links do not reflect your site's content! This might be wonderful if hundreds of sites link to you using positive and appropriate phrases...but beware of the phenomenon called "Google Bombing", where webmasters band together to link to your site using negative keywords. With the growing popularity of blogging and social media, Google Bombing is becoming easier to do, and has the potential to become a public relations nightmare.

Step Eight: OFFSITE Basics - What to Avoid

Here is what to avoid in pursuing in bound links.
Remember, link QUALITY is important. As you pursue inbound links to your site, avoid low quality sites (like link farms) and sites that promise to submit your site to thousands of search engines for a low price...or for free.

Think about it: the quality of your link relationships is too important to mass produce. On the internet, you can't buy trust...and you cannot develop it by simply pressing a submit button. If you could, everyone would do it, everyone would take the easy way out -- and everyone would be number one at Google!

And of course, that is just impossible. Do not be seduced by the "one click and you are submitted to one million sites...guaranteed!" promises. It's just silly.

In fact, you'll notice that none of these eight steps mentioned anything about "submitting" to search engines. That is because you do not need to submit to Google, MSN, Yahoo, and other legitimate search engines. These engines send out their spiders. If you continually work each of these eight steps, the search engines will find YOU.

Remember, a great position at Google, Yahoo, or MSN is not a quick and easy way to boost traffic. Earning a top search engine position – and staying at or near the top – requires a long term approach to internet marketing. Companies need to continually develop quality content and promote their sites to remain visible not only at the search engines – but also to develop solid relationships with online prospects and clients.

These eight steps cover only the very basics of search engine marketing: but "working the basics" is smart marketing. if you continually work at your site to develop great content and high quality in bound links, you WILL achieve search engine success.
