One of the things I've learned, mostly from myself, is that unless you get a little nudge you might just let such an awesome learning opportunity pass you by.  Therefore I have put together a bunch of my own personal notes from this fantastic course.

So lets start with 'Killer Copywriting' - by Jeff Paul

- The more your ad looks like an ad the less it will perform.  You need to make it look like the conent in the ad.

- 'How to ...' is always a killer headline.  Just think about it....

- Using quotation marks around headlines always improves responses.

- look for providing the 'quick and easy way'.  The Majic Pill because everyone, including you, wants one.

- when writing a direct mail piece, yeh remember those one's that you send via snail mail, use Courier or TimesRoman font.

- even though you are writing, write like you are talking. ie 'As I said a few minutes ago' or 'Like I said'

- for ads in papers, if you can't fit everything in just make the font smaller.  They will read it.

- remember to restate the main benefit in your P.S.

- and the biggest one that I picked up is that you MUST always start your sales letter so you are entering the conversation in your customers head.

What to do with all those PLR Products
 
Introduction

We all love the giveaways! All of those products and information are there for the taking - in exchange for our names and email addresses. Most of us know that building a huge opt-in list, in a very short amount of time is what the people who are giving the products away are gaining.

We, on the other hand, are gaining a ton of products for free. Many think that is the only benefit to us of these giveaway products, and few utilize these products to their full potential. The fact of the matter is, these products that others are giving away represent a goldmine to those who are downloading the products - if they have the ability and knowledge to see that.

Think about the last giveaway that you 'attended.' You signed up for the giveaway, and downloaded free products like crazy. Now, what have you done with those products since then? The chances are good that you may have actually read a few of the ebooks, and possibly even used some of the software applications. The chances are even greater that you did nothing more than that.

You are literally leaving money sitting on your hard drive - the money never even made it to the proverbial table! There are numerous things that you can do with those free products you downloaded, and all it takes is a little creative imagination and a little elbow grease. You can literally start making money from products that you downloaded for free within hours of downloading them - if you know what to do with them!

The first step is to get your downloaded products organized. This may take a great deal of time if you haven't been doing this all along. But regardless of how long it takes, this is something that you need to do before you can determine how best to use the products that you have.

Products should be placed into folders, as follows: 1 folder for products that you have private label rights (PLR) to; 1 folder for products that you have resell rights to; 1 folder that you have master resell rights (MRR) to; and 1 folder that you do not have any PLR, Resell, or Master Resell rights to.

Now, inside these folders, you should group like products together.   For instance, if you have products that pertain to dogs, keep all of the dog products in a folder named 'dogs.' If you have a lot of Internet Marketing related products, keep all of those in a folder named 'Internet Marketing.' These subfolders should, of course, still be kept in the main folders that depict what the various rights to the products are.

It is also important that you keep all licenses, sales pages, branders, and other information that was in the original product
folder inside the folder with the product - just as it was when you downloaded it. If you start moving things around, you won't remember what product gives you what rights.

It may also be a good idea to start cataloging the products that you download. Again, this may take some time, but in the end, it will prove to be a time saver. This can easily be done on a spreadsheet. Also, make sure that you note what licensing rights come with the product on the spreadsheet, just in case something does get lost.

Again, this organization does take time and effort, but it is very important. It is equally important to really look at each product that you've downloaded. Some of it is total junk, and just needs to be deleted. But you need to thoroughly look through, try, or read the product before you determine that. If you absolutely know that you will have no use for it, dump it. If you aren't sure, hang on to it.

It is also a good idea to keep track of how you've used each product. This can easily be done in the same spreadsheet that you set up to catalog the products. Later, you won't remember how you used these things, so it is important to keep track. You might even want to include information that indicates how successful your use of the product was - whether that success is measured in dollars, opt-ins, or website visitors.

While it will take you time to sort out what you already have, you can be sure that when future giveaways take place, you will be better prepared for those downloads, and it won't take any time at all to sort and organize the newer stuff. So, this organization that you do now will not only make your use of the products much easier, but it will save you a great deal of time later when it comes to future downloads.

Once you have everything organized, you are ready to determine how best to put each of the products that you have to use. In the following pages, you will find ten different ways to use the free products that you have downloaded, and you may find that many of the products that you have can be used in more ways then one.   Therefore, when using your products, don't remove them from the files that you have sorted them into, unless you know for an absolute certainty that you won't be using a product again.

Before deleting any product from your hard drive, make sure that you back it up onto a disk first. That way, should you discover in the future that you do have need of the product again, you still have the product. With all of this said, let's find out how to cash in with those giveaway products!

What the heck is an autoresponder?

An autoresponder is much like a fax-on-demand system, where you call a number  or, in this case, email a specific email address, fill out a form on a website or do something, like buying something online and get an instant reply.

Internet marketing and online business people agree that email autoresponders are the greatest marketing tool ever invented. Why? Because it gives people instant access to information!

Think about it.

People are more likely to send an email to autoresponder than to a real, say, sales department. The reason? People want information NOW! They don't want to wait nor ask for it.

But the reason why marketers love "smart" autoresponders specifically is because, when prospects request information, their inquiry gives you permission to follow up with them!

"Smart" or "intelligent" autoresponders go further than just a one-time reply, because they allow you to correspond with personalized follow-up messages after the initial reply...

How to be Sequentially Superior

Email is an important aspect of marketing online. But a single email is NEVER enough and in fact can be more costly down the road. Here's why...

Like standard advertising, it takes repetition in order to get people to first absorb the message, understand it and then ultimately take action.

Naturally, some people will immediately respond while others need to see the message more than once before they even think about responding.

The reason is that each individual has a specific buying behavior. For example, the marketplace is divided into several, graduated segments that are based on such behaviors. They are:

  1. Innovators (2.5%),
  2. Early adopters (13.5%),
  3. Early majority (34%),
  4. Late majority (34%)
  5. And laggards (16%).

Innovators are risk-takers and venturesome. They usually respond to new offers immediately and quickly, without giving them much thought.

Early adopters are impulsive, too, and respond to new ideas early taking action soon after the innovators do, albeit a little more carefully.

The bulk of the market consist of the "middle majority" (68%), consisting of the early and late majorities. It's the biggest "piece of the pie."

The first half, or early majority, typically respond to new ideas fairly quickly but are a little more cautious and conservative than early adopters.

The late majority, however, are more skeptical, careful and slow. They take their time, usually shop around and need to see offers more than a few times before giving them any consideration.

The final segment, or laggards, are the slowest to respond. They take action only after time has elapsed, usually once everyone else has done so.

So, what does it all mean to you?

Ultimately, the important thing to note here is that a marketer's goal is to effectively reach, persuade and incite the largest segment...

The middle majority (68% of your market).

But doing so is difficult to do with a mere, single mailing. Repeating your marketing message more than once is essential with this group.

Email marketing is much like blacksmithing. To mold the metal, you must hit the iron: 1) while it's hot, 2) in the right way and 3) many times.

So, autoresponders allow you to automate the process of instantly replying to someone who either 1) asked for more information or 2) did something (such as buying from you).

Keith, when you start putting the wheels in motion to consistently follow up with your prospects, you'll start seeing the incredible results this amazing tool brings!

For example, you can use your autoresponder to...

  1. Send instant information to people who request it;

Please read through it at your convenience, John. I will get back to you the same time on Wednesday with our special offers.

Feel free to send me an email or call me, toll-free at 877-555-1212, if you like to discuss your needs in greater detail.

By the way, the words in red have been automatically added by the autoresponder for you. It can capture and add a first name, full name, month, year, a few days ahead, you name it!

Autoresponse: A "Thanks" for Requesting Information

The aim is to thank your prospect for requesting information and introduce your website or product to them. It's important to outline the major benefits and what's in it for them!

Follow-Up #1: Introduce a Deadline or Time-Limited Offer

After a few days, your prospect can easily forget about you. Don't just remind them of your offer but also make them feel a sense of urgency, like, "I better get this before it's too late".

Use scarcity, such as time-limited or quantity-bound offer. Perhaps there are only a 17 seats left at a seminar you are promoting, or maybe only 200 copies of your book printed.

Follow-Up #2: Reinforce Benefits to Persuade Prospects

Sent 3-5 days after the original request, elaborate on the offer by reinforcing the benefits. Stress the benefits they get from buying your product or doing business with you.

Follow-Up #3: Pile on the Bonuses to Get Them Excited

Stress the bonuses or premiums (many people buy products just for the bonuses). Remind them that bonuses are limited and guaranteed for a number of days. Again, use scarcity!

Follow-Up #4: Build Value by Comparing Your Product

Demonstrate the value by comparing "apples to oranges." If you're selling a report on how to create websites, compare it to paying an experienced (and rather costly) web designer!

Follow-Up #5: Boost Desire with Glowing Testimonials

Build trust. You're totally unknown to your prospects. But they will trust you far more if you give examples of what other people have said about your company and product.

Follow-Up #6: Demand Action and Remind of Deadline

This final step of your sequence is what makes or breaks the sale. Remind your prospect of the benefits of your product, and especially the urgency and scarcity, like a deadline.

(Potential) Follow-Up #7: Do Market Research

Remember that even when the follow-up sequence is complete your prospects are still very valuable to you, whether they bought or not. First, you can contact them for research.

Ask them why they haven't bought from you. The information they provide may help you change your offer or even rewrite (or add something to) your autoresponder sequence.

Second, contact them on a regular basis thereafter (using your autoresponder's "broadcast" feature) to let them know of website updates, new products, special offers, etc.

Lesson #4: Six Powerful Places to Advertise Your Autoresponder!

Once you set up your autoresponder account, now you need to start promoting it! There are tons of places and ways you can do that... But let me give you at least six to start with.

These six places are...

  1. On websites,
  2. In newsletters,
  3. In classified ads,
  4. In "signature files,"
  5. On business stationery
  6. And in digital goods.

On Websites

The most popular place for advertising an autoresponder is on the web. You can post your email link or set up a form that triggers your autoresponder on your own website.

It works 24 hours a day, seven days a week. If you use your autoresponder for providing more information on a product, your website becomes a 24-hour customer service person...

Working around the clock for you, even while you sleep!

One of the most useful ways of using smart autoresponders is to offer a brief synopsis of your website via autoresponder, particularly for those visitors who may be in a hurry.

But there are many others. In fact, autoresponders have innumerable uses and advantages. For example (and this is just a partial list), autoresponders are great for offering...

  • "Digital" catalogues
  • Specific product information
  • Answers to frequently asked questions (F.A.Q.)
  • Free stuff, such as courses, ezines or reports
  • Special offers or (printable) "coupons"
  • Samples, demos or previews
  • Agreements, contracts or proposals
  • Transcripts and manuscripts
  • Etc, etc, etc.

With Smart Responder you also have the ability to use a simple wizard that will help create forms for you. All you need to do is, once done, copy and paste the resulting HTML code.

You can also add attachments to your autoresponses. So, if you sell, say, digital products like software, then once a person buys on your website they get instant delivery!

Do you practice reciprocal linking? In other words, do you exchange links with other webmasters? If so, why not use your autoresponder instead of a plain link to your website?

People will seldom stay or buy the first time when clicking on a link. But if your link is for an autoresponder that offers a free report, a free newsletter or a free email course, you...

... Kill two birds with one stone!

In other words, unlike a URL that people click and visit only once, people who get your autoresponder emails are exposed to your website, business, product or offer more than once!

There are other places to promote your autoresponder. For example, you can use it with banners, some pay-per-click search engines or even with your own affiliate program!

If you have an affiliate program, you can offer your affiliates a web form they can use to promote you one that inserts and tracks their affiliate ID into their visitors' autoresponses!

Finally, with Smart Responder you can create multiple accounts. While the benefit is self-explanatory, another is to track which product or web page pulls the most interest.

In Newsletters/Op-in Lists

We discussed the benefits of creating an opt-in list, building your database and publishing your own ezine quite at length in lesson #3. In here, I'll discuss other people's ezines.

First, realize that promoting your product in front of targeted, eager prospects is probably one of the most effective and productive form of online marketing currently available.

Very simply, "opt-in" email is made up of people who have asked to receive information on specific topics. By its very nature, opt-in email marketing is highly targeted.

But what about other people's ezines or opt-in lists?

In fact, there is a vast array of ezines and opt-in lists now available. The beauty of advertising in other people's lists is that you know, in advance, what type of audience they are.

There are ezines on pretty much every topic imaginable out there. For example, you can target magazine collectors, pet owners, French cuisine lovers, businesspeople... You name it!

By the way, while I'll return to this in a future lesson, keep in mind that you must avoid SPAM... Spam is NOT opt-in email. You can lose your account, your website and your business!

Sending opt-in email is also called "permission marketing," since people are giving you the permission to promote to them. Stick with permission marketing at all times!

Nevertheless, find those newsletters or opt-in lists that target people that fit YOUR target market. Check out online ezine directories or buy a list from a reputable opt-in list broker.

Nevertheless, you can do a little research and find websites that publish ezines (or maintain opt-in lists) where you can:

  1. Buy classified ads in,
  2. Write articles for,
  3. Send press releases to
  4. Or purchase "solo" mailings with.

Just make sure to include your autoresponder's email link or web form URL either in their content or in the "signature file" section at the end (I'll return to "signature files" later).

In Classified Ads

It goes without saying that there are thousands of places to advertise your Smart Responder. Classified ads are found in newspapers, magazines, websites, ezines, journals, etc.

Classified ads vary in terms of size and length, depending on where they're published. Online, most ads are 65 characters in length, and about four to five lines deep. For example:

You can promote your autoresponder in a classified ad like the one above... But often, your ad will appear among many other ads. So, being clear, highly visible and compelling is critical!

Having a top spot is one important step. But another is to have great copy. Your ad must beg people to click it. Your choice of words can make the crucial difference...

... Between a winner and a dud!

First, find ezines and opt-in lists that target your audience. They should be #1. Find them through search engines and directories whose topics would appeal to your market.

Then, seek out the major online services, like Prodigy, Juno, AOL, Compuserve and so on. They have popular classified ad boards. Many online "malls" have classified ad sections, too.

And finally, some portals, communities and directories (not to be confused with directories like search engines) will publish your "listing," which can also be a classified ad.

In "Signature Files"

A signature file is what you add at the end of every email message you send basically, a few lines to advertise you, your website or your Smart Responder autoresponder.

Depending on your email software, you can have a signature added to each message with your software directly, or as a separate file (text or HTML) hence a "signature file."

You can add a signature file (also called a "signature tag") to all your emails, newsgroup posts, message board postings and discussion lists contributions... It goes wherever you go!

Place your autoresponder email address (or website address that carries your web form) in your signature file. Typically, they are between three to five lines long... But no more!

Why? By keeping your signature short and sweet it doesn't look like an outright ad. It should identify you, your business and your link. Also, keep it under 60 characters in length.

But you can use it to briefly and subtly promote a special offer, a free report, a website address, a free newsletter and so on. Like classified ads, the copy is VERY important.

Remember, since they're offline they have to go through the extra effort in emailing you. So, a plain email address won't cut it! (If it were the case, they would call you instead!)

Finally, Digital Products (or "Viral Marketing")

One of the biggest trends right now is a process called "viral marketing." It's not complicated... All it is, is a message that spreads from email to email, or email to web, like a virus.

If you create a certain "buzz," your message will be passed around from person to person like wildfire. But you can make it even easier by incorporating your message into a digital file.

Why? Because with computers, it's so easy to simply copy and paste! For example, you can create an electronic book (or "ebook"), or a piece of software (also called "freeware").

For example, my friend, Michel Fortin ("The Success Doctor"), offers a free ebook on his website. It has been downloaded and passed around hundreds of thousands of times!

... And How to Avoid Them!

The importance of building an opt-in list over spamming (a.k.a., using unsolicited commercial email) is something that I can never stress enough. You must avoid it at all costs!

That and more can kill your business!

NEVER use your autoresponder for spamming in any way. You can lose your account, pay fines, get locked out from your ISP, lose your website and, above all, get jail time.

It's a serious matter that must never be overlooked. Sure, you may stumble onto someone who says they can help you spam without getting caught. But please remember this...

The reason you want a smart autoresponder is to expose your sales message more than once to your prospects in order to create trust, credibility and believability.

So, why would you do something that literally contradicts that very notion? Spamming is good if it's done once. That why spammers must keep spamming in order to stay alive!

Spamming is  Like a Drug

Spamming is like a brief high... If it works (and it rarely does), it only brings a small cash infusion in the short term. That's all. You have to remain unknown, cloaked, hidden.

Then you have to work, and work, and work... Non-stop!

On the other hand, if you build an opt-in list of eager, highly targeted prospects, you only need to work once... That's it! You can spend the rest of your time growing your business.

From complaining to your ISP or web host, to sending mail bombs, nasty viruses and even significant threats from hacking into your computer to causing physical harm!

Plus, nowadays many recipients are members of a variety of anti-spam groups that arm members with tools for tracking, reporting, filtering and even stopping spammers' attempts!

Of those, the most popular one is CAUCE (i.e., the Coalition Against Unsolicited Commercial Email). They have created a number of tools, such as blacklists, now used by most ISPs.

Finally, keep in mind that email software (and "add-ons") are making it more and more difficult for spam to reach its final destination, from sophisticated filters to complaint reporters.

Less than a half-percent of people will get your spam!

Save Time, Effort and Money!

Building an opt-in list has a number of advantages. Sure, you can build trust with and sell a lot easier to a list of targeted people. But in addition, responsible email allows you to:

  • Send email offers to a group of people who know you, expect your emails and want to do business with you.
     
  • Achieve greater sales, even from a small list, since it is targeted (and will get through most email filters since your newsletter is added to the recipients' "whitelists").
     
  • Not upset anyone since they have given you their permission to email them, as well as not get in trouble with service providers since no one is complaining.

  2. WHY the information is being collected (tell them that it's for a free report, ezine or whatever, and if you plan on adding their information into an opt-in list for sending periodic announcements or special offers).
     
  3. WHEN that information is being used (tell them exactly how often do you plan on emailing them).
     
  4. WHO will be using (or accessing) that information (while you should be the only one, here you might include staff, service providers, partners, etc).
     
  5. WHERE the information is actually stored (tell them that the information is also secure from hackers with Smart Responder our servers are safely located in a secure data center with ultra-reliable protection).
     
  6. And HOW to remove or modify that information (tell people exactly how they can update or change their details, or remove themselves from your list).

If you remember, the majority of people (i.e., 68%) need to see your sales message more than once before they even think about going ahead. This is applicable to every market.

But, Does Following Up Really Get Results?

You won't know until you actually try it yourself. BUT, I can surely tell you that it has for many others! To explain, here's another excellent article written by my friend Michael Fortin:

How to be Profitably Persistent

Were you ever late in paying your bills? If so, you may have received at some point those nice reminders collection agencies love to send.

For example, at first you get a letter in the mail with a typical request to pay your bill (or debt) immediately, and to "govern yourself accordingly."

If you don't respond, a second letter in the form of a reminder is then mailed to you a few weeks later, perhaps with a "we're concerned" feel to it.

And finally, if you happen to be as persistent as the agency, you then get a third letter with that big, red "Final Notice!" stamped in the corner.

Why do they do this? Because it works!

Sequential direct mail has been as profitable an endeavor for direct marketers and entrepreneurs as it has been for collection agencies.

Even though I've first heard of this technique from marketer Dan Kennedy, I still didn't believe in it until I actually used it in my own practice.

Tested in one of my client's businesses, our first mailing conducted to 7,000 recipients generated a response rate that was less than 1%.

It's not much, but it's typical for most one-time direct mail marketing campaigns. Ho-hum.

However, the big surprise came when the rate climbed to about 7% following the second mailing and over 3% after the third!

Targeted to the same group of people, all three mailings combined totaled an amazing 11%!

But here's the kicker.

While we tripled our direct mail expenses, the overall response was a tenfold improvement over what could have been a single mailing!

Here's what we did. The first letter had a special time-sensitive offer and an invitation to enter a draw to win one of my client's products.

The second letter, mailed 15 days later, had a "sorry we missed you" and "we're concerned" feel to it. It offered additional incentives to help nudge unresponsive recipients into action.

Thirty days after the initial mailing, a third letter boldly stated, "this is your last chance" and "offer to expire soon," in red, right at the top similar to the collection agent's final warning stamp.

The content of the letter reinforced the urgency of the offer and added an extra incentive that was not offered in the previous two mailings.

But we didn't stop there...

Shortly after the draw, we decided on a fourth mailing to all those who did NOT respond and offered a discount on the same product drawn.

It said: "Congratulations! You've won the second prize: a $[X] rebate on [product drawn]." The response rate finally rose to a total of 16%!

As you can see, 16% is a far cry from 1%. But if you divide it by four, it means that the campaign yielded an average 400% boost in response!

You see, multiple mailings tend to make an offer more valuable. When it's repeated, people have the natural tendency to assume that the offer is important and not a fly-by-night spiel.

In fact, repetition not only helps to emphasize the importance of an offer but also aids its comprehension and reinforces its urgency.

Become Relentless Like a Collection Agent!

After a prospect asks for more information on your offer via your autoresponder, it can automatically deliver your series of pre-written follow-up email messages in preset intervals.

By creating a sense of urgency (such as by making your offer time-sensitive), your follow-ups can help reinforce that urgency in subsequent mailings and add weight to your offer!

Your follow-ups can nudge prospects into action!

Plus, by adding an extra incentive with each mailing, your offer becomes more valuable and more difficult to ignore.

These additional bonuses can simply be comprised of special reports, articles, ebooks, freeware, reviews or even courses delivered incrementally via smart autoresponders.

Words that help increase interest, curiosity and desire are those that help to paint vivid pictures in the mind, and offer some kind of direct incentive or reward to the reader.

For example, some words are proven to "pull" more, such as: "discount," "guarantee" and "free." But obviously, no incentive can be more direct than one with the word "free" in it!

While we offer a free version of our autoresponder, you may offer a free report, a free ebook or a free ezine, then use it in your email ad for your autoresponder. Here's how I do it:

Don't be shy. Tell them what to do. It's the most vital step to follow! This can be as simple as telling the reader to visit your website right now or to email an autoresponder address.

6. Sense of Urgency

Finally, try to create scarcity with your ad or add a sense of urgency. Make the offer time-sensitive or quantity-bound. The more you do, the more responses you will get!

Urgency is Where It's At!

Let's say you've purchased space for a solo ad in an ezine and wanted to expand the above ad. The easiest way to do this would be to add more benefits and a few testimonials.

But another effective way is to also add scarcity into your ad in order to give the reader several reasons to respond NOW! For example, you might add the following note to the ad...

Of course, this will only work if you're honestly raising prices. But you may be offering, say, the extra bonuses for a limited time, or perhaps there are only 17 of your products left.

A final addition to your solo ad should definitely be a "P.S." at the end. A "P.S." is usually the second most read part of your letter (after the headline, of course).

Use one (or more) to not only highlight the main benefits or even a guarantee, but also to remind readers of a deadline or to reinforce the urgency  maybe with an added bonus.

This is the last lesson. In here, I'll show you how to maximize your GetResponse's Smart Responder with three more tips for boosting your autoresponder's visibility.

But let's recap what you've learned so far...

Now, let's take a look at three areas I haven't tackled thus far. You may choose to use or not these strategies. But I highly suggest you take a look at them a little more closely.

Offline Advertising

First, while your business may be online or Internet-driven, don't discount using offline advertising in your portfolio of marketing strategies. In fact, there are many reasons for it.

Of course, there are a lot of people online these days. But in many businesses and in some homes, many people still aren't. They may only use email (or only have time to use email).

Some just visit the newsgroups (newsgroups, or "Usenet," is the ancestor of the Internet). Or some mostly browse the web in public places, such as offices, libraries and schools.

Try to get in front of these people, too!

Sure, we talked a little about offline advertising in "places to advertise your autoresponder." But we only looked at print publications. Don't forget there are many other places!

For example, don't forget radio, TV, direct (postal) mail, billboards, bus stops, public transportation billboards (like signs on buses), newsletters, yellow pages, trade journals, etc.

The bottom-line is, in whatever offline advertising you use, start including your free "email report" or ezine offer in these advertisements. You might be surprised at the response!
 
Press Releases and Publicity

Publicity is the cheapest and the most powerful form of advertising. Why? Because it comes from an objective third party... Such as in a newspaper article, for example.

This way, it makes your "ad" more believable, credible and trustworthy since it comes from someone other than you... Plus, it doesn't appear as a blatant promotional message.

Press releases are great marketing tools to pull in inquiries and sales without spending a single penny on advertising. You can use the same technique as before to capture emails.

Let me explain...

Of course, the foundational component of the news release is the news aspect. You have to be newsworthy! You must tell a good story that people want to talk about or report on.

But here are important elements you must include: 1) a good headline; 2) an informative story; 3) a number of quotes and reactions; and 3) the sender's contact information.

In this last section (the contact information), add a small signature file offering readers something for "free" if they respond to you via email to your autoresponder opt-in list.

Reporters and news editors are always looking for content and newsworthy items. If they like your story, chances are that they will publish your autoresponder's address, too!

So, why not take advantage of the opportunity!

Word of Mouth

If the people who responded or have requested your "free report" also like it, they will send or pass your message along to their friends or family who they think may like it, too.

Remember when we talked about "viral marketing?"

It's simply human nature. Of course, many people will pass it around without you knowing. But encourage viral marketing by adding a notice to that effect within your message!

For example, it may say something like: "Do you know of anyone who might like this report? Feel free to pass this message along to anyone who you feel may enjoy it, too."

Now, make sure the new recipient also joins your opt-in list! Say something like: "If someone passed you this message and you want more information like this, then email [link]."

Or, you can even redirect them to a "tell-your-friends" web page that will send your autoresponder's link, either email or web form, to their friends... For example, like this one!

But in order to give your viral marketing campaign leverage, don't forget "other places" on the Internet you can use to advertise your autoresponder. For example, there are...

  • Newsgroups
  • Message boards
  • Online communities
  • Article contributions
  • Discussion lists
  • Online guestbooks
  • Reciprocal (or favorite) links
  • Archive of your articles
  • Ad or banner exchanges
  • Etc, etc, etc.

Advertise your autoresponder in your signature file or subtly within your non-commercial posts on these locations.

For example, while posting, offering more information on the topic by advertising your free report via autoresponder is a good way to keep your posts short, sweet and on-topic!

Nevertheless...

Once you're up and running with your new autoresponder, you'll see the immense power of using it almost immediately as it helps you convert up to 400% more prospects into sales!

hope you`re looking forward to uncovering the secrets that it holds.  In today`s "Marketing Strategies that EMPOWER
Success"  lesson, you`re going to learn the BASICS OF EMAIL MARKETING.

Now I know what you`re thinking:  Basics don`t sound very exciting or "empowering."  But the basics are the foundation
upon which everything else is built. Miss these and you may end up spinning your wheels for the next 12 months.   (Wouldn`t you rather be spinning stories about how you made your first million?)

So find a comfortable spot, put up your feet and let`s get ready to rumble!

Essential Rules For Effective Email Marketing
===================================

If you want an email campaign to succeed, you don`t want to offend anyone when sending your messages.  Turn off a
consumer with your email and you can be sure they`ll tune out your message.  Don`t let this happen to you!

A message that earns respect makes sales.  That`s why our first topic for discussion is email etiquette. (Later in the
course, we`ll talk more about how to write an email sales letter.)

Train yourself to always -- and I mean ALWAYS -- stick to the rules below when crafting your email message.

=> RULE #1 - ALWAYS WRAP YOUR LINES AT 65 CHARACTERS OR LESS

Whenever you write an email, always format the lines so that they`re 65 characters, or less, across.  To do this, you may
need to do a "hard return" by hitting "Enter" at the end of the line.

Wondering why to limit your lines to just 65 characters?  (Good question!  It shows you`re thinking.)  There are two
reasons that "less is more":

-- The first thing to remember is that looking at a computer screen for a long time causes EYE FATIGUE for many readers.   The shorter span of characters across the screen makes reading easier and more appealing to the recipient of your email message.

-- The other reason to go short instead of long is this:
some email clients AUTOMATICALLY ENFORCE LINE-WRAPPING at 60-65 characters on received messages.  If your email is wrapped at 70, the content will arrive all "chopped up."   This makes it unattractive...and worse -- unappealing.

-- Tip within a Rule #1:  Email clients such as Outlook Express allow you to SET THE LINE-WRAP to any
character-width you choose.  That means you won`t have to hit Enter each time after typing 65 characters.  Makes life
easier!

-- Tip within a Rule #2 - You can type 65 asterisks or dashes in a Notepad file to create a template.  Then paste
your email below it to see if any lines extend too far to the right.

=> RULE # 2 - BE CAREFUL USING ALL CAPS

How many times have you changed the TV channel to avoid listening to a screaming car salesperson?  No one likes a
screaming salesperson...and no one likes a "screaming" email message, either.  Odds are, when someone has over-amped the volume of their message by using too many capital letters (not to mention too many exclamation points and other
punctuation) - you`re going to be turned off.

On the Internet, email messages written in all caps are considered yelling. It`s okay to write some sentences and
some words in all caps, but don`t go overboard.  (As you can see in this message, I`ve tried to use capital letters to
help break up sections of the content from time to time)

-- Tip within a Rule:  Consumers buy from a source they trust.  Emails in all caps are perceived as "shady" or
uneducated, and have an appearance that damages the credibility of an offer.

=> RULE #3 - WATCH YOUR Ps & Qs (Spelling and Grammar)

Would you be influenced by an email selling you something that had noticeable spelling and grammar mistakes?  Sure you
would...and the influence would be negative, not positive!   When a consumer reads a sales message that`s filled with
errors, they think to themselves, "Good grief, this person doesn`t even take the time to get his emails right.  His product is probably the same quality as his emails."

When you`re in business, YOUR IMAGE IS YOUR REPUTATION and your reputation is the reason people buy from you or the guy down the block.  It`s essential that you create an image of INTEGRITY, CREDIBILITY, and HONESTY in the mind of your prospects. Sending emails filled with errors doesn`t hurt your professional image...it destroys it.  (Ouch!)

Day #3 - Quality Results versus Optimized Results
 
Mother Teresa once said that she would never attend an anti-war rally.   She certainly had the right idea.  Being against something is not a solution.  You need to be pro-PEACE.

Likewise, I don't want to be ANTI SEARCH ENGINES, rather I'd like to be Pro Quality.

Here is the major problem I have with today's search engine landscape...

If you look at the top three search engines they are really not search engines at all...they are advertising agencies that disguise themselves as search engines.

The difference is HUGE.

The outcome is always the same though.  An advertising agency makes its money from selling advertising not from delivering quality search engine results.  The way that the search engines  pull the wool over the publics eyes is by making us think that their technology recognizes quality.

BUT THE EMPEROR IS NOT WEARING ANY CLOTHES.....

The results are gruesome, barbaric and oppressive.  I know that those are harsh words but here is the deal....

The footprint of oppression is always the same.  It doesn't matter if it occurs in a household, a community, a country or a planet.  You can spot oppression by recognizing its footprint which is always crystal clear.   Oppression makes you afraid that you might be doing something wrong and that there will be painful consequences to any action that you take.

If you have been afraid of search engines you now know the reason why.   I have coached hundreds of people and this is the characteristic that all of them shared when they started working with me.  They were all afraid of doing something wrong.

The search engines cultivate this by refusing to provide us with a workable definition of quality.   Then they bombard us with their propaganda that they deliver quality results.

Here is what enfuriates me more than anything else....and it is the true mark of oppression.  The search engines penalize a site and do not tell us why.  Imagine if a goverment behaved that way.   Kind of makes Adolf Hitler look like an altar boy doesn't it?

Here is the KEY POINT that you need to remember to succeed....A Search Engine can only define quality in quantitative terms.  (You might want to write that one down...)

With that in mind, the solution is obvious....and I will discuss that further in tomorrows email.

Day #4 - Defining Quality in Quantitative Terms
 
How do you define quality? That is a tough philosophical question but instinctively we all know it when we see it.

With regards to the search engines they do not have that luxury. They can only define quality in quantitative terms.

Here is how they do it.... We don't need to know the exact algorithm but we do know the components......

Every web page receives a score for its on page factors as well as for its off page factors. On page factors are those things that are on your page. It is comparable to your work resume. It is how you tell the world who you are and the technical factors you use to it. In this instance it will consist of your title tage, your meta tags, your heading tags your image tags. Add that up and a score is given to these factors.

In essence your web page is like your resume. However, all resumes are absolutely meaningless if they do not have references to support their claims.

I could build a web page in 5 minutes that says that I am the worlds greatest brain surgeon. Who is going to give me a reference? Your references are your off page factors. They are the links that point at your web page and what they say about you. You need good on page factors and good off page factors to succeed.

This concept is what originally separated Google from the rest of the Search Engine world. The founders of Google theorized that in the scholastic world you could define quality how OFTEN a text was referenced in the scholastic literature.

For example, if you were looking for a cure for a disease you could tell which were the highest quality texts by how often they were referenced in other scholarly documents. This is what LINKING is supposed to represent.

However, it has become highly bastardized. I contend that a GOOD LINKING strategy will account for over 70% of your overall success online.

Day #8 - Promotion: Just Spell My URL Right!

Many years ago in Hollywood up and coming stars recognized that publicity was more important than accuracy. Actors would often comment that they didn't care what was said in the papers as long as their name was spelled correctly.

The same can pretty much be said with regards to your online promotion strategy. You need LINKS. You can get these links from lots of different places. I will provide several resources.

However, the best place for you to promote yourself is by writing articles and submitting those articles to article directories. Here is a slam dunk for you.

The most powerful article directory on the web can be found at ezinearticles.com. Every page on EzineArticles.com has a Page Rank of 6. (Page Rank is Googles attempt to determine the quality of a web page. The ranking is from ZERO on the LOW side to Ten on the high side.)

Write an article on your niche and submit it to ezinearticles.com. 

Now create a slightly different variation of that article and visit isnare.com. isnare.com will submit your site to several thousand article directories.

These two actions are the top two tools that many very successful marketers use in their traffic arsenal. Why? If you recall in an earlier lesson, I stated that search engines are really barbaric link calculators. They can only define quality in quantitative terms. Linking is the primary determinant of how the search engines determine quality. What are the other ways that search engines use to define quality? I will cover that in tomorrows email. Until then,

Day #9 - How Would You Define Quality if You Were A Search Engine?

If You Were A Search Engine, How Would You Define Quality? Chew on that question for a few days and your online marketing will never be the same. I have chewed on it for several years.

Search Engines are not very good at defining quality. They are forced to look at other definitions of quality and use those definitions as a filter or brownie point in their own definition.

I'll give you a few examples regarding what search engines can and cannot do. Search Engines cannot understand what is said on a page. However they can understand the elements that are used to say it.

Let's say that you are selling hubcaps. A search engine might define quality by a site that has the MOST pages on hubcaps and also uses several other communication elements to tell the world more about hubcaps. What do I mean by communication elements?

a) sites have pdf documents on them.
b) sites have Video on them.
c) sites that offer Audio Downloads on them.
d) Sites Have Podcasting on them.

In this example things like pdf documents, video, audio and podcasting are all communication elements. The point that I am trying to make is that although none of these definitions is a perfect definition of quality it is a workable definition for us.

It is our job as promoters to mimick quality as close as possible. What a search engine is trying to do is to find a way where its software can detect quality elements so that it can deliver quality results.

Now if you are a little perturbed with this barbarism....welcome to the party! In my marketing efforts I experiment with these ideas a lot and find that as I add more of these qualitative elements to my site(s) the higher my search engine ranking(s) are and the more traffic I receive. All of these things are part of your ON PAGE factors. Those are the elements that are on your page. I consider on page factors to consist of roughly 30% of your total search engine score.

On page factors are like your work resume. They are the way you tell the world more about who you are and all of the elements that you use to do it. However, the real magic will always take place on your off page factors. And I will discuss that in greater detail tomorrow. Until then,

Day #12 - How Video is revolutionizing the Search Engine World

The web is still very young. Up until now the internet has primarily been a text based medium. However that is all changing very. very quickly. Recently Google purchased YouTube.com for $1.6 billion. Pretty amazing for a company that is only about one and a half years old! In the last 12 months Google made $9 billion dollars with its adwords text based advertising model. Now Google is introducing its Video Adwords model. Most analysts feel that Google is eyeing the $100 billion text based advertising industry. What does this mean for your knowledge of Search Engines? Video is beginning to rank high in the organic search engine rankings. VIDEO is an RSS feed. At the time of this writing there are over 200 video portals on the web. At the beginning of 2006 there were a small handful. Like I said yesterday...although it is not a perfect definition..."Quality Sites Do Video!" You should as well. Create a video and submit it to video.google.com and also to YouTube. If you have understood what I have discussed over the past few weeks it is not the content in the video that creates the ranking.....IT IS THE LINK. The TITLE OF YOUR VIDEO if classified correctly is capable of generating top search engine rankings for the low hanging fruit. What do I mean by that? There are a lot of search engine terms out there that have a lot of demand but very little supply. As a marketer your job is to be able to determine which keywords you can be competitive in quickly. Day #13 - The Truth about Blogs

Over the last several years there has been a lot of hoopla about blogs. As a matter of fact in 2004, Blogging was considered to be the technology of the year by Time Magazine. I'm not overly impressed with this as TIME also chose Hitler to be the Man of the year in 1938. The real question is "What is a blog and why have they become so popular?" As a subscriber to my ezine you can appreciate that I favor workable and practical answers. A blog is nothing more than a web page with an rss feed on it. An rss feed is a pipeline in which you can put images, audio, video or text in it and have it syndicated anywhere on the web. Within this response is the real reason why blogs are so popular. Syndication of content and the expanison of RSS technology. Blogs permit interactivity. They also permit ones content to be syndicated all over the web. Search Engine Spiders love Blogs. I explain it this way; "There are millions of conversations taking place on the web every day. Blogs permit those conversations to be recorded and promoted for the betterment of everyone interested in the dialogue." Blogs exist for every topic imaginable. From government to education to tiddly winks. People can enter into a dialogue on their favorite topics with blogs or simply subscribe to the information and immediately recive it on their computers when it becomes available. This is raw power. Day #14 - Why You Have To Start Podcasting!

Remember when a famous bank robber was asked "Why do you rob banks?" he answered "Because that is where the money is!"

The reason you want to learn everything you can about podcasting is "because that is where the spiders are!"

Quality sites do podcasting. Even though this is not a perfect definition it is a workable definition. Search Engine Spiders crawl podcasts like there is no tomorrow. What is a podcast? A podcast is an audio file in an rss enclosure. Several days ago, I mentioned that RSS feeds were what made the blog magic happen.

Podcasts are personal broadcasts that individuals and corporations do to promote their areas of expertise. Here is the point that I was trying to make. RSS technology is a PULL technology. When you subscribe to an RSS feed you pull information in to yourself. It completely bypasses the need for search engines and the search engines are very aware of this fact. This is how powerful RSS feeds are.

A video online is an rss feed. A blog is a web page with an rss feed. A podcast is an audio file in an rss feed enclosure. Get the idea of power here? It is all about the RSS feed. There are times when Search Engine Optimization is like a broken record. In the days before the Internet we all found our information at the Card Catalog at the local library. Why is it then that none of us have ever heard of a library card catalog optimization expert? In the library card catalog days, to be successful you would want to make sure that your book was classified in as many appropriate and relevant categories as possible. Same is true for your website. Think of your website as a book. If you wanted to make sure that you really got exposure you would classify your website in as many categories as possible. As hard as it might be to believe the propaganda that exists in the Search Engines tells us that this is considered SPAM. My advice to you all is to recognize that if you are going to be successful online you have to shamelessly promote yourself as much as possible. Any entity that prohibits you from doing that should be completely ignored. I have taught people to focus on simply this one element and they have gone on to have incredible success. The reality is that the Search Engines do want to deliver the best results that they possibly can, but the truth is that the methodology they use to do so is very, very primitive. I have already stated that your website is like your resume. Your incoming links are like your references. This is the huge limitation that all search engine operate under. The majority of the time the solution to more traffic and better rankings is getting more references in to your site. 80% of Search Engine magic will always revolve around the number and quality of links you have pointing at your pages. The MAGIC of driving traffic revolves around the POINTER. The remainder is about how you can make your website as powerful as possible. A great idea is to brainstorm all of the ideas and ways that you can get links pointing at your site. If you think about this for a short while you will see that the challenge is very surmountable. Day #17 - The Power of Being Connected!

I want you to go take a look at a website today because if you understand what they have done you will know what you will have to do to get some top search engine rankings for your website. Here is the website: http://www.savetoby.com Huh? This website was a publcity stunt. The owner claimed that he found Toby the Rabbit after Toby was beat up by an alley cat. The owner of the website then submitted a press release and stated that he was going to KILL Toby and eat him unless he sold 100,000 copies of his book. I think his book was on rabbit stew recipes. If you study the website you'll notice a few things about this site. When I wrote this message the site had a page rank of 6. It gets lots of search engine traffic and enjoys very good rankings. How did they do this. Two Words. Press Releases. This website owner wrote a press release and several top news organizations wrote a human interest story about him and placed a link on their website. They received coverage from Fox News as well as MSNBC. Note to SELF: THIS IS THE POWER OF BEING CONNECTED! A few powerful links can make all of the difference in your search engine rankings. How can you duplicate this for your website? That is a riddle for you to solve. But first off if I were you I would study everything I could about Press Releases. Just one or two links from powerful websites will result in some powerful traffic for you. Learn what you have to do to learn how to stand in front of other peoples traffic. Some ideas on list building.....

One of the questions that I receive regularly is "how do I build my list?" Online your list is your most important asset. It was the great Yogi Berra that stated, "you can observe a lot by just looking." One of my colleagues, Chris Lockwood is someone you will want to study in this regard. He is the creator of the "Giveaway Formula." He uses giveaways as a means to build his list and he networks with other marketers to create a list building co-op opportunity. It is a brilliant way to create value for everyone involved. A few times a year, Chris gets several marketers to contribute free giveaways as the incentive for people to signup for his list and the lists of several marketers. This is a great idea in any niche. Day #18 - Sucking Up To The Librarian....

Before the Internet there was the library. Most people seem to forget that. As a matter of fact the search engine evolved from the library card catalog. So why have we never heard of a library card catalog optimization expert? If you were a LIBRARY CARD CATALOG OPTIMIZATION EXPERT you would know that success would often be determined by your ability to get classified in as many relevant keyword categories as possible. In otherwords, you would have to learn to suck up to the librarian. In my presentations, I tell my audiences that the LIBRARIAN organizes the books she receives based upon the titles of the books. As simple as this analogy might be it is exactly the way that search engines work. Your TITLE of your web pages is the single most important way that your website gets classified. Simply look at how manhy of the top ranked websites how they have all used that word as the title of their web page. You have to call your web pages by terms that people are looking for and classify yourself in that niche. While we all think that we understand this. Let's think outside the box here. If you were selling "Border Collies" how could you classify yourself to give yourself an immediate edge? You have to look at this question through the eyes of the customer. If a customer is looking for a Border Collie they are going to want one in their immediate geographical vicinity. So you could create 50 new pages on your site whose titles were "Border Collies Florida", "Border Collies Georgia", "Border Collies Alabama" etc. This is how you suck up to the librarian and give yourself an edge. Day #19 - Your Limitations: The Launchpad To Your Dreams

I've had the good fortune to work with several very successful entrepreneurs over the last several years. One of the most important lessons that I have learned from these individuals is the manner with which they deal with obstacles. One of the most common obstacles that I have had to learn how to address is "new terrain." By that I mean, that a venture pushed me into an area where I have never had any experience and I am literally in uncharted waters. There are two main schools of thought when you get pushed into "new terrain"; a) Become a quick study and learn as much as possible..... b) Outsource the projects, schedules, plans of the "new terrain" to someone who is more expert in the area. The successful entrepreneurs whom I have come to know almost unanimously prefer to outsource the new challenge to someone else. This permits them to focus on doing what they do best and see the project through to its conclusion. We all have limitations. What successful entrepreneurs have learned is that it is of no value to place our focus upon limitations. If we were to focus on limitation it will be impossible to create abundance. Take for example, the case of a new budding internet business owner. I will refer to him as Dusty. He desired to have a new business online. He knew what he wanted. However he also knew that it would take him several months of full time study to be able to learn how to do it himself. What Dusty did was to hire a web designer and for less than $100 he had a fully functional website online in a matter of days. Dusty was then confronted with the challenge of building his list for his new online business. He hired a freelance writer to write a free report which Dusty offers on his website to people who visit. This cost Dusty an additional $50. You can easily see that for a cost of $150 Dusty created an online enterprise. More importantly he used his limitations as a launchpad to his dreams. Dusty now focuses on doing Joint Ventures with other established business owners to offer solutions and opportunities for mutual benefit. Now stop and think about the individual who was confronted with the same challenges as Dusty but instead chose to try and be a quick study. There is nothing inherently wrong in being a quick study. However anything that increases the length of the runway to being in business online usually makes you focus on your limitation instead of the natural abundance of the universe. What newbies do is they bury themselves into every nook and cranny of a project and lose sight of the big picture. The big picture is that Business is ALWAYS about making sales, creating value and offering solutions to the customer. You will run into new terrain over and and over again through your life. Limitation or Possibility the choice is always yours. When you stop and analyze them I hope that you come to recognize that your limitations are the launchpad to your dreams as well. Day #20 - The World according to Phd Students!!!

When the founders of Google were Phd Students at Stanford they theorized that the way you could define quality in the intellectual world was by how often something was referenced in the scholarly literature. Those references are links. The concept made wonderful intellectual sense. However, it has become highly bastardized. If you want to read the paper you can go here: http://infolab.stanford.edu/~backrub/google.html The POINTER is what you need to make waves online. However, it is a very poor definition of quality. Google theorized that if information was relevant people would naturally link to it. That idea works in the intellectual world...but as the internet becomes more commercial those scholarly ideas die a cruel death. There is no incentive for me to link to a competitors site. Here are some linking strategies. I could spend several months getting into the nuances of all of these strategies. Day #22 - Understanding Authority

Yesterday I asked you a question about understanding which sites on the internet seem to have apparent authority. Educational Institutions and Governments are not only powerful but when they endorse you that endorsement actually carries a lot of weight. I have noticed repeatedly in my Search Engine Optimization campaigns that blogs from .edu and .gov sites that link to me carry a lot of weight as far as generating traffic. Here is a key point that I want you to understand about the internet. Because of the way that blogs have floursihed in the past several years you need to recognize that somewhere out there a conversation is taking place related to your "keyword" or topic. Wouldn't you like to be a part of it? These conversations primarily take place in blogs. The fastest way you can find them is by visiting http://blogsearch.google.com This portal allows you to locate all of the places online where high ranking blogs are discussing things related to your keyword. As you find them, my advice to you is to "elevate" the conversation. This is no different than attending a dinner party and recognizing that a conversation is taking place about something that is very important to you. Become familiar with the conversation that is occuring and take it to a new high...and make sure you create links back to your sites. This is a surefire way to draw a lot of attention to yourself. Day #23 - How Many Ways Are There to Stand In Front of Other Peoples Traffic?

By now you should have realized that search is simple. There is nothing overly complex about it. However it is very time consuming. Here is the question that you should be asking yourself 365 days a year, 24 hours a day.... How many ways can you stand in front of other peoples traffic? Today, I'm going to teach you one powerful way to stand in front of other peoples traffic. What do I mean? If you can find a high-traffic site and somehow get visitors to run into, over or through you there, two things will happen: 1. You will get lots of traffic and 2. The search engines will pay more attention to you It's a powerful, simple and direct marketing strategy. Many years ago I recognized the power of this technique when I was selling stuff on ebay. I created an about me page on ebay and I would drive hundreds of very targeted visitors to my website. First, consider this... In the past ten years the largest fortunes online have been made by selling traffic. A tiny little search engine called GoTo.com (now Overture, or YahooSearchMarketing) created the industry we now know as pay-per-click. Online advertisers "buy" keywords and create small text ads that appear on search pages when those keywords are searched. When users click on the ads, the advertiser pays the search engine per click. Pay-per-click is estimated to be a $15billion dollar a year industry. Google "owns" about $10 billion of it. Now that pay-per-click video is here, it's going to grow dramatically. Google has its eyeballs on the 100 billion a year advertising market. Making that industry accountable would be a wonderful thing for business. So how does pay-per-click work and why is this relevant? In the pay-per-click industry, all keywords are auctioned off to the highest bidders for placement. For example, the keyword "digital photography" is currently bid at $5.00 per click on Yahoo! That means if 1,000 searchers for "digital photography" click through your ad, you owe Google $5,000. You're betting you'll convert enough of those visitors to offset that cost. These prices are very similar for pay-per-click on the Google network. BUT...if you were able to generate the same kind of traffic through the main (non-paid) search listings, you wouldn't have to pay those prices. The problem is, it's almost impossible to generate the top results in search engine main listings without SPENDING AS MUCH OR MORE for that "placement" unless... YOU LEARN HOW TO STAND IN FRONT OF OTHER PEOPLES' TRAFFIC. Okay, so here's how you do it... There are now more than 200 video portals on the Web. At the beginning of 2006 there was there was one. By the end of this year there could be more than 500 portals primarily devoted to video streaming. Smart Internet marketers will place their Internet infomercials on ALL of these video portals (and it doesn't cost anything). Here is a list of some of the best video portals.... What is I told you that listings on these video portals drive tons of targeted traffic to your web pages? This keyword which costs $5.00 per click is still being searched on video portals. If I can only get 10 visitors a day from these video portals to my website that will equate to 300 new visitors per month. Since I didn't pay $5.00 per click for those eyeballs in essence I saved myself $1500 per month, or $18,000 per year in promoting my website. Sometimes all you have to do to succeed is to learn to stand in front of other peoples' traffic. In other words, this is how I stand in front of other peoples' traffic with VIDEO--"people" like Google Video, YouTube.com and all the other portals, which draw millions and millions of visitors daily. Day #25 - The Science of the Network

Here is a word that I suggest you look up in the dictionary. Ready? Go to the dictionary and look up the word "NETWORK." What happens naturally online is that networks form and grow. If you want to be successful on the internet you need to know everything you can about creating a network, plugging into a network and growing a network. The chief factors about the internet are that it is global, intangible and it is composed of networks. You might want to write that statement down. GLOBAL...INTANGIBLE....NETWORK. So here is my question to you? Tell me about your network online? Or better stated, how do you tell the spiders about your network? The Network is what empowers the node. If you don't have a network you are simply a node. Being a node...is now way to go through your online life. Day #26 - Science of the Network - Part Two

Today I am going to talk about POWER. Power is best defined as "what you are connected to!" Those connections are LINKS. Without links empowering your page you cannot create real power on the internet. Often times all it takes to succeed is to plug in to the right networks. Do you know how to do that? Here is the BILLION DOLLAR QUESTION. Where is your traffic RIGHT NOW? The only way you can answer that question is if you provide an exact location. I recently worked with a merchant who sold baby items. They answered that question by recognizing that their traffic was in baby doctor offices. They began a marketing program to get a small postcard in the materials that are handed out to expectant Mom's on their first visit. Since they did this their sales have soared. Day #27 - Connecting to Power

Power in the offline world is often defined as what you are connected to. Same works online. If you understand this basic principle you should be developing strategies to plug into POWER. On the internet the one thing that happens naturally is that networks are created. You have to learn how to recognize power and then plug in to it. More importantly, you have to create a structure that makes it easy to empower others. Sites that empower others are usually powerful sites. Power online can only be created through your linking strategies. Today's lesson is very short and sweet. By now, you have learned the importance and tactics involved to promote your website. If you are not out there creating links that point to your website you are not going to get traffic. As a matter of fact, I would go so far as to say that not creating these links is like winking at your "spouse" in the dark thinking you are going to get lucky. LINKS empower you. LINKS classify you. LINKS navigate a path to you. LINKS categorize you. LINKS promote you. LINKS define you. You MUST give the world something to click on if you are hoping to get traffic. Your Net Worth is determined by your NetWork! (You might want to write that one down) In the online world your network is a huge factor to your success. You can only create that network with LINKS. Day #29 - What would you do if.... 
 
By now you hopefully have come to appreciate that Search Engines are in reality Promotion Monitors.

I like to describe Search Engine Optimization to offline businesses as a piece of software that monitors every traceable bit of promotion that a business can do.  Imagine if a piece of software existed that monitored how many outgoing calls were made, or how many letters were sent out or how many face to face appointments its sales people had in a given period of time.

If the future traffic that this software sent you was dependent upon the quantity of your promotion, what would you do?

The right answer is you would hire a whole host of people and promote like crazy.  Top rankings is all about promotion.  I highly recommend that you study every method of online promotion that you can and then get on with it.

Search Engines (Promotion Monitors) monitor the quantity and quality of the promotion that your website is doing.

Day #30 - Traffic Versus Conversion - Round One

Everybody claims they want more traffic. It seems that traffic is the narcotic that fuels the internet.

Mention it and peoples heads spin just thinking about it. The cold hard truth is that traffic is everywhere online.

The reality is that conversion is much, much more important than traffic. Traffic is the easy part of the equation.

Imagine a website that gets 1000 visitors every day. Has a 1/4 of 1% conversion rate. This means that it converts 2.5 visitors out of every 1000. Let's assume that every sale is worth $100. This site is grossing $250 per day. Now imagine another website that gets 35 visitors a day and has a 10% conversion rate. This website will take 28 1/2 days to hit 1000 visitors. However, all things being equal, with every sale being equal to $100 dollars. This site is receiving only 3.5% of the traffic that the first site is receiving. However, if you do the math it is making $350 a day.

That is the power of testing and knowing your conversion ratios. It ain't traffic that makes the cash register ring. It is conversions. Think about this the next time you look at your server logs and study your traffic. Generating traffic is pretty easy. By now, if you have studied my ebook and these daily messages you should know how to generate traffic to wherever you want it to go.

I explain it this way.... Imagine having a salesperson who makes a lot of presentation but never makes any sales. What would you do with them? Chances are you would let them go because they were not creating any revenue for your organization. Same is true for your website.

If you are getting traffic and not generating sales you have to change your message. Your web designer is not going to be able to do that for you. I'll discuss that more in tomorrows message.

Day #31 - How different would your e-life be if....
 
How different would your e-life be if your website was generating 5,000 additional visitors per month?
How about 10,000 additional visitors per month? 20,000?

Most people think that generating traffic is difficult.  Nothing could be farther from the truth.

Here is a little secret....

It is not traffic that is difficult, it is conversion that makes the cash register ring.   In my "Search Mastery Feed The Spiders" workshop I show my students the blueprint to massive traffic generation.

Some are doing incredible.  Others are still struggling.

Want to know the difference?  Everyone is getting traffic.

Some are seeing 300% - 500% increases in traffic based upon the things I teach them.

I am going to use a technical term here.....

Sometimes you have to admit that your website sucks!  All the traffic in the world will not change that.
Sucky websites just plain suck.

If you can get out of the way of your ego and make changes to your website it is an admission that you respect the judgment of the marketplace.   If you do not, it means your problem is EGO and conversion.   Small changes can make huge differences in your online results.

Day #32 - Understanding Miami 
 
Have you ever been to Miami?

I ask because I think that Miami is a wonderful analogy to understanding where the internet is going.

How's that?

Well, Miami is a wonderful dynamic and prosperous community.  Up until 1977 English was the predominant language in Miami.  Today the dominant language is Spanish.  There are many sections of Miami that speak only Spanish.

I grew up speaking Spanish so I have always felt very comfortable in Miami.

How does this relate to the internet?

Well the dominant method of communication on the internet has been TEXT.  The internet version 1.0 has been a text based medium.  However, like Miami that is all changing.

Although the transition is very gradual the internet is slowly moving to an audio and video based medium.

For those who know how to speak audio and video the future will be very bright.

Promotion online can be done with text, audio and video and you have to know all three methods if you really want to prosper.

It is much easier than you think.  Newbies wrestle with technology thinking that the answer lies in technology.  Businesspeople worry about getting their message out into the world.  The difference is huge.

Text, audio and video are simply different layers of one another.

You are reading this message in a text based format.

If I turn on the tape recorder and read it...it becomes an audio based message...when I attach an rss feed to it it becomes a podcast.  Podcasting is one of the things that has made itunes one of the top ranked sites in the world.  Spiders love podcasts.

If I turn on a video camera, or take graphic images and turn into into a slide show I have a video.  Videos are the fastest way to get eyeballs.  Take a look at this video which I put together to promote one of my online businesses.  At the time of this writing it has received over 2500 views in less than two weeks.

Day #33 - Speed is Where the World is Going - Part One
 
In 1844 Samuel Morse tapped out his first telegraph message, in what was later to be known as Morse Code and the precursor to the telegram.   He tapped, "What hath God wrought?"  Since the beginning of time mankind has always sought a means to jump higher, run faster and communicate better.  The internet is changing our core definitions of what is possible.  Although technology is a potent force in creating change,  as businesses the underlying concern is how do you harness the power of innovation that technology makes possible.

When people think of technology the tendency is to get lost in a maze of complexity.  Most Internet experts love to talk "geekspeek" and overwhelm you with all of the latest gadgets and technobabble.  The real purpose of technology is to simplify your life.  Think of what occurs when you enter into a room and flick the light switch to the "on" position.  The lights turn on.  You don't have to worry about wiring, transformers, cables or anything else.  Your business technology should operate with similar ease.  If it does not, it is not technology, regardless what your Information Technology Officer says.

When the internet first presented itself, an average website cost several hundred thousand dollars.  The webmasters who were creating these digital palaces were showing off all of the newest techno doodads.  However, the only reason your website should exist is to SELL your product or service.  Unfortunately, these webmasters did not understand this basic principle.  This oversight was responsible for the dotcom bust and is a testament to the digital graveyards these companies sponsored.

In order for you to effectively sell online there are only two requirements;
a)  You capture the email addresses of your prospects and customers.
b)  You communicate with them regularly and offer them value and solutions.

I marvel at how complex people get about technology.  There are a few elightened souls out there who understand that simplicity is the name of the game.  However, most businesses have a perspective of technology which is unfounded.  They ignore the two fundamentals above and spend hundreds of thousands of dollars thinking there is some other solution.

Conversion.  I'll talk more about that tomorrow.

Day #34 - Speed is Where the World is Going - Part Two
 

Do you remember those episodes of Star Wars and Star Trek?  Whenever they needed information they would ask the computer a verbal question....

"Computer...tell me about...."

As trivial as that may seem I want you to ponder that and compare it to the current search engine landscape.

The language of the internet is slowly moving to audio and video.  Will you resist the change or embrace it?

Have you ever noticed the battle that technology has to go through before it is accepted?

New technological breathroughs are always perceived as a threat.  People unaware of the technology are slow to see the benefits of the new solution.  Instead they usually look at the threat of loss the new innovation is creating.

One of the best cultural examples of this is the folk song "John Henry."  Although the legend of John Henry sounds like the ultimate urban legend, it is certainly based on historical evidence.

In order to build the railroads, companies hired thousands of "steel driving men" to smooth out geography and eliminate any obstacle that stood in the way of the proposed railroad plan. One such obstacle was the Big Bend Tunnel --  more than a mile straight through a mountain in West Virginia.  As the story goes, eager to reduce the cost of employees and  to also speed up progress, some tunnel engineers were using steam drills to power their way into the rock.  According to the famous ballad, on hearing of the machine, John Henry challenged the steam drill to a contest.   John Henry won, but died of exhaustion, his life cut short by his own determination and superhuman effort.

They say 'Down yonder lies a Steel driving man!'

Man versus technology.

When the typewriter was invented all of the clerks who wrote manually were the ones who were responsible for resisting the change.

So much so that they actually organized group protests and even attempted to burn down a typewriter manufacturing company.

The same is true for any new breakthrough technology.  When the word processor entered the marketplace in the 1970's it was the typists who most resisted the change.  Old technology suppresses new technology.  This is the age old truth through which I feel it is important to look at to better understand the core values of the eRevolution.

There is one word which very quickly summarizes what the eRevolution is all about.

People think its all about technology.

However, the word is "Accountability."

The online businesses that are reaping the highest rewards follow one very simple formula that is at the heart of the eRevolution.

They want to know how many visitors are visiting their websites and from that amount how many are becoming customers.

This is referred to as their conversion rate.  All prosperous online businesses live, eat and breathe their conversion rates.

All floundering businesses are unaware of this simple yardstick.

Speed is Where the World is Going....if you know your conversion rates you'll enjoy the ride a lot more.

Day #35 - What Makes Customers Buy?
 
What Makes Customers Buy?

One of the amazing fascinations of consultants is the age old question. "what is it that makes customers buy?"  If you were to ask ten consultants that question you probably would never receive a duplicate answer.

There is one truth that I have learned that has helped me help others.  I'll share it with you;

People buy what they want, not what they need.

Billions of dollars has been lost in the marketplace by businesses who thought that their purpose was to fill a need.  It can be a very expensive education.

My first job out of school was selling insurance.  I thought for sure that everyone would just line up to purchase my wonderful products.  Not so.  Although I did very well in that business roughly 5% of the people that I contacted granted me an appoinment and of those that I saw only 25% purchased.

If you have ever sold insurance I am sure you can relate.  People buy what they want not what they need.  In spite of that fact that we are know that we will die someday people do not usually want to buy life insurance.  They feel that they don't need it.

One of the most famous examples of need versus want confusion is the hamburger giant McDonald's.  Several years ago McDonald's introduced the Veggie hamburger.  It was positioned as a Healthy Big Mac and with huge fanfare heralded the move of the fast food giant towards a healthier menu.  The marketplace needed the product.  I could list hundreds of reasons why the product should have worked.  The cold hard reality is that nobody wanted it.  It failed miserably.

If you want to make money you need to sell what people want.  Find a hungry market and give them exactly what they are asking for.  As simple as this sounds many very educated people think that success in the marketplace is more complex than this.  Don't look at the marketplace through your ego, but rather through the customers ego.  It is a wise businessperson who
knows what is wanted and steers clear from what is needed.

What does this have to do with Search Engine Optimization?

Everything.

Traffic is the easy part of the equation.  By now you should know at least ten ways to generate traffic to a web page.  My first two businesses online failed.  They didn't fail because of lack of traffic either.  They failed because they were bad businesses models.

Amateurs think that if you throw enough traffic at a web page the dollars will just pour in.  It doesn't work that way.

Customers Buy when they know you, like you and trust you.  Make sure that your web page and business model doesn't get in the way of that statement.

Day #36 - The Biggest Misconception About Marketing Online!
 
The biggest misconception about marketing online is that people think it is about the technology.  Newbies to the web think that the web is about computers.   It is not.   The internet is a technological marvel however business is always about bringing people together.

Fifty years ago telegrams were considered the closest thing to instant messaging.   Thinking that the internet is about computers is like thinking that telegrams were about the lumber that held up the telephone lines.  The value of the web is that it should be perceived as an interactive communications tool that is capable of being independent of time and location.  You build customers over time through your communication with them.  In the offline world this can be very costly.  On the web it is the way that business is transacted.

My experience has taught me that the majority of people who have not succeeded in marketing a business online was due to the fact that they got totally trapped in thinking that they needed to understand every nuance of technology that makes ecommerce possible.  Or they thought that the solution was in technology that was over their head and budget.

Let me tell you a little secret.

I know a lot of internet millionaires.

Although it helps if you do have an appreciation for technology, the majority of e-millionaires that I know have very novice oriented computer skills.

Technology helps business transactions occur but the secret sauce that makes business occur is always about adding more value to life.

It amazes me how many companies do not understand this.

Value can be feelings of goodwill.   More often than not value is created by implying exclusivity and that you are getting a deal that is unavailable anywhere else.  However, for marketers value can also be a sense of "genuine" understanding that a merchant offers to customers  to earn their trust.

Great Marketing campaigns know how to create value!

What does this have to do with Search Engines?

Everything.

The myth of the online world is that if you just "add" traffic ... sales will occur.  Traffic is the easy part of the equation.

You need to ADD VALUE.   The marketplace pays you for the value you bring to it.   The Search Engine Spiders reward you for the amount of promotion they have seen of yours.

The difference is vast.   More on this tomorrow.

Day #37 - The Power of Change and Change Again...Part One
 
"This changes everything!" - Back to the Future

Change is somethiing we all seek to better understand.   In the marketplace thousands of minute innovations occur daily.   While most are clever attempts to capture attention a handful of these changes are worth embracing as they impact the way we conduct our daily affairs.

Change can be broken down into two broad categories.  Cyclical and structural.

J.P. Morgan was once asked what would happen in the stock market the following day.  He quipped, "it will fluctuate."  Mr. Morgan was referring to cyclical change.   Business Cycles move from recession to recovery.  Cyclical change is all around us in the marketplace.  The markets move from trough to peak responding to human nature and supply and demand.  These cyclical changes create temporary alterations.  For example, the price of gasoline drops from $3.50 per gallon to $1.50 per gallon.  The prime interest rate drops a quarter of a point.   A country moves from a democratic to socialisitc government.

These changes move in cycles and occur regularly in the marketplace.

On the other hand structural changes are a completely different issue.   When a structural change occurs it changes the way we deal with the future forever.  It is a dramatic change in the marketplace that will result in numerous more structural changes.   A tructural change communicates very loud and clear that our understanding of what is possible has been dramatically altered. These changes are easy to recognize with the benefit of hindsight.  They require a calm analytical skill to
appreciate while they are occuring.  An appreciation of technology can also be helpful.

Take for example, the music recording industry.  The technology of the music industry began with:

78 speed records
These 78 speed records were replaced by 45 speed records
The 78 speed records were replaced by 33 1/3 speed records
The 33 1/3speed records were replaced by the tape casette
The tape cassette was replaced by the CD Rom
The CD Rom  was replaced by the mp3 audio download file

Who knows what will replace the mp3 audio download file but I can assure you that entrepreneurs are addressing that issue as I write these words.  The key thing about structural changes is that they never revert backwards.  MP3 audio download files will never be seriously challenged by 78 speed records.

Once you see a structural change you can't put the genie back in the bottle again.

What does this have to do with Search Engine Traffic?

A technology called RSS (Really Simple Syndication) will make search Engines obsolete.   It permits users to pull information in to themselves without the benefit of Search Engines.

RSS is at the heart of blogs, audio and video.   I'll talk more about that tomorrow.

Day #57 - Traffic, Conversion and Enlightenment!
 
I regularly receive emails from my subscribers.   Most of them are appreciative and positive.   Ocassionally someone has a bone to pick with something I've said.   I always welcome the feedback.

Here is an email I received recently:
"Harald.  I want and need to make money online.  What is the best way for me to do this?"

I felt like saying "please re-read the first 56 days of my newsletter and when you are done please feel free to contact me again!"

One of the biggest disagreements I have with the so called gurus online is that they position the online world as being different from the offline world.  The technology is different.  But the sales process is identical.

The big myth is that traffic is the answer.  (It can be!)

People are looking for solutions to problems, feelings of goodwill and genuine relationships.   That is how you build value in the offline and online worlds.

Imagine having a salesperson who made 100 presentations and never made a sale.   Would you keep him working for you?

The reason I consider this question so important is that it clearly demonstrates that traffic is not the problem.  A lousy presentation is a lousy presentation and all the traffic in the world hearing it is not going to change that.

I spent over twenty days providing tips and hints on conversion.   When you master conversion your cash register will ring twenty four seven.

In Life We Can Have Results or Reasons. If you are not getting the results you want, your reasons are the lies that you keep telling yourself. You can try to argue with that statement but its kind of like wrestling with the wind, it will keep you real busy but you really won’t get anywhere.   Lies create the idea that we are powerless to make things any different than the way they are.

Success Online is directly attributed to connecting to power and creating value.  My question to you is how do you go about connecting to power and creating value?

Day #58 - An Open Letter to Google

Dear Google.

Over the years I have been impressed by some of the technical feats that you have performed.

Your technology is very impressive. However, I am writing today to voice some concerns that I hope you will address.

It is admirable that your company has become the success story of the internet era. My hats off to you. I have never, and will never fault a company for making money. I genuinely admire your creativity and ingenuity. Making ten billion dollars a year for such a young company is off the charts admirable!

I am very concerned about several aspects related to your business model.   First and foremost is your stand on internet privacy.

I have been testing your gmail service and I must say, it is most awesome.   Speed, storage, convenience. My question to you is how private is my information?

Is it possible for you to clarify your policy on data retention and data sharing?

Those adword ads that you run in the gmail service are very relevant and it seems like my gmail account is not private at all.

Google has immense data processing and storage infrastructures in place.   Just wondering where I fit into that equation? Other serious concerns include the unlimited period for data retention that Googles current policies allow, and the potential for unintended secondary uses of the information that Gmail will collect and store.

I recognize that my technical abilities are limited. However, when all of my incoming messages are scanned for the purpose of ad placement it certainly violates the trust that I place in an email provider and establishes a dangerous precedent. I'd be more than willing to pay for your service if you could assure me of the privacy of my correspondence.   Privacy is my primary need. Not that I have anything to hide.

As a side note I have never requested the large volume of breast or penis enlargement correspondence that I regularly receive. If possible, I would like that deleted from my file. I have this recurring nightmare of some Johnny Cochran type lawyer making my spam folder public. That kind of thing could really hurt a guys reputation.

I have read your CEO's comments on net neutrality and that didn't really pass the laugh test. Care to elaborate?

Next I have some questions related to your google toolbar. For many years I had your toolbar on my computer. Once again it was so convenient.   Then I started thinking about spyware. The definition of spyware is computer software that collects information about someone without their informed consent. Now I recognize that to get the toolbar installed on my computer I had to click and approve those legal forms to appease the lawyers. I hate to admit it but I didn't read those forms. Can you please answer for me why you have to put spyware on my computer to improve your search engine results? I don't understand, and if you do study my file you will quickly notice that for someone who receives a tremendous volume of breast and penis enlargement offers even on your gmail platforms, I've also never knowingly visited any of those sites.

Also, what's the big deal with the recent changes in the algorithm? For the last six years George W. Bush came up number one for the keyword term "miserable failure." He was followed by Jimmy Carter and then Michael Moore. In the past few weeks you changed all that and have led people once again to believe that your secret algorithm is the definition of eQuality.
I didn't understand those results nor do I feel what replaced them is any better.

Your senior counsel policy adviser, Andrew McLaughlin recently stated that "While removing search results is inconsistent with Googles mission, providing no information (or a heavily degraded user experience that amounts to no information) is more inconsistent with our mission."

Wouldn't it just be easier to let the public define quality by letting them vote on what their user experience was. Sure sounds a lot simpler than using sophisticated mathematics to create a sophisticated guess.   Just curious.

By the way, I recently looked up the word "Search Engine" on Google without the quotation marks and MSN was #1, followed by 4 other listings.   Your Search Engine came in at #6. You might want to get that Matt Cutts guy on this project right away. Does he really make a couple million a year?

This shareholder thinks the newest algorithm needs a makeover.

I am also curious as to how the Google China site is doing?

When I compare results from
http://Google.com to Google.cn they seem very similar until I get into religious and political arenas. Can you clarify your view on censorship for me please? I can't understand how censorship of religious and political ideas can ever be seen as good. Now I realize that China has a couple billion prospective "clickers" but come on, you don't want to go down in eHistory as the Search Engine that whitewashes the truth do you? Or do you prefer to be referred to as an advertising agency since that is where you make all of your income from?

What specifically makes Googles work any different than black and white propaganda?

My friends tell me that "the bottom line is the bottom line." I am hoping that is not so. I think a more worthy punishment to Matt Cutts would be to send him over to your China office. He screws up like that in Peking and we'll never hear from him again. (Nobody really believes him anyway!)

In the last several months I have witnessed several huge changes in the adwords program. Seems like you are perfectly content in telling me how I should run my business when I am an advertiser but when it comes to China I see a double standard. Care to explain?

Should I open up my Google Adwords account in Peking?

If you don't believe in internet privacy and do believe in censorship just say so. Most webmasters are terrified of you already. That algorithm dance is brilliant. I don't think Hitchcock could write a better script, unless he were in China.

Please respond at your earliest convenience with a huge boost in my current search engine rankings, or Matt Cutts' current job.

Day #59 - Outside the Box Solutions
 
Here is a billion dollar question.

Ready?

Where is your traffic right now?   No vague answers.  You need to be as specific as possible.

If you answer that question specifically the answers to how to stand in front of their traffic will come to you.

Here is an example of what I mean.

Last week, I discovered a keyword phrase related to my business that is searched several hundred times a day and there is very little competition.

My traffic is viewing that listing.   People who want to learn about Search Engine Optimization are often directed to that search engine result.

Yesterday, I wrote an article  targeting that keyword.   I am having it submitted to several thousand article directories.
It will take a few days for it to get accepted an published all over the web.

The keywords and anchor text that I am targeting should have me on the first page within a few weeks.

I can't tell you what the keyword is just yet.  But if you review some of your previous emails its all right there in black and white.  Kind of like the DaVinci Code.  If you think literally and strategically you will figure it out.

Day #61 - Time or Money, or Both?
 
What "energy" resources are you going to spend so that traffic arrives at your site?

Time?

Money?

Both?

The reason I have spent so much time suggesting that you study conversion is because it is so much easier to make changes to your website than to drive traffic to it.

When you figure out what works best on yoru page you are ready to really rock and roll.

Here are some examples of someone whom I worked with on some tests that they ran on their website.

Adding a "post it" note to their sales page resulted in a 12% increase in opt-ins.

Moving their sign up box to the top of the page resulted in over a 25% increase in conversion.

Adding a guarantee logo produced over 12% increase in sales.

Adding a small photo of the ebook resulted in a 14% increase in sales.   Adding a drop shadow to the booklet resulted in an additional 11% increase in sales.

The devil is in the tiny details.

When you study what real traffic is all about you will quickly come to recognize that the pro's are willing to buy traffic from the pay per click networks once they know what their conversion rates are.

Makes sense doesn't it?

Traffic is rarely expensive when you know your conversion rates.

The heart of any good business strategy is to reduce risk and to increase profits.   That is why testing is so important.

When you get into the habit of testing no stone will be left unturned....

The point of all of this testing is that when you get it "right" you are hitting the marketplace with the highest converting combination fo possibilities.

Let me give you an example of how important this is.   A few years ago I was extremely active in doing adsense marketing.

When I first started my average conversion rate was about 1% and each click was worth approximately 14 cents.

I began testing all of the parameters within an adsense ad.  The layout, format, clors, background colors, borders.....by the time I was through I had a format that was converting at roughly 22% and each click was worth roughly 21 cents.

Before I tested every 100 visitors would result in earnings of roughly 14 cents.   After testing every 100 visitors resulted in earnings of  $4.62.  This was 2100% increase.

It doesn't make sense to leave that much money on the table does it?

Day #64 - Making Quality Known.....
 
I want to pose a powerful philosophical question to you.

In a previous email I asked you, if you were a search engine how is it that you would define quality.   It is the one question that search engines wrestle with each and every day.

One of my all time favorite sites is a music portal called
www.pandora.com

This site is UNBELIEVABLE.   When you visit there you will be amazed by what they have put together and their technology.
It is the most incredible music portal in the history of mankind and I am not exaggerating.   Enter a song or artist and their technology will create playlists of similar and related artists.

I love music and have spent countless hours on this site since it was introduced to me.

But here is the rub....how in the world might a search engine be able to determine the real quality of this site?

The same way they would determine the quality of your site.

www.pandora.com has over 653,000 incoming links pointing to their website.

Remember:  Your website is like your resume.  A resume is totally empty without quality references.   Search Engines wnat to know about your references.

Make your quality known to the world.  Your link campaigns need to be continuos and ogoing.

Day #65 - The Top Five Internet Marketing Sins.... 

In the consulting work that I do with businesses I ocassionally have to sit through some really boring meetings with opinionated business owners who think they are smarter than the marketplace.

I've created a short list of the things that I have learned.  I refer to them as the TOP Five Internet Marketing Sins....This is a short list of the stupidest things a marketer can ever do.

1. Assume that the customer is interested in anything but themselves.   It is never about you, your company or your products.  Success in marketing is all about understanding the customers ego.  The absolute worst presentations, sales letters and websites all think that the spotlight should be on them.  Check your ego in at the door and focus entirely on your customers ego.

2. Designing an ad campaign that shows off the designer's wit, and style -- but does little or nothing to sell the product.   Great marketers are great salespeople.  Lousy marketers have issues in asking for the order.  Madison Avenue is famous for glitz and is totally resisting the accountability that the internet brings to the advertising game.

3. Trying to create demand . If the buying public doesn't currently buy your kind of product, don't think it is going to start just because you think you can show how good it is.

4. Thinking that the best product wins the race.  It is not logic that makes sales.  ("We have a better product than the most popular brand and can sell it for the same price. When word gets out, everyone will buy ours.")  Microsoft is not the best software in the marketplace.  However, they understand marketing better than all the other geeks combined.

5. Continuing a failed marketing campaign.  When the market tells you your idea is no good, listen to it.  It is time to go back to the drawing board.

The easiest online business that you will ever get yourself involved with is one that fulfills demand.  The toughest is a business that has to create demand and fulfills a need.

In the words of Sergeant Phil Esterhaus from the television series, 'Hill Street Blues',

Taking action toward what you want will always win... even if you start wrong, it's better than sitting still.

Each and every day online, you're going to come up against another obstacle. It may be small - it may be big. Everyone in business has obstacles to overcome. I personally face obstacles online EVERYDAY! That's just the way business is... the road isn't always smooth or easy. There will always be some distractions as well.

Those that succeed in business don't allow anything to stop them from moving forward toward their goals. Each day you’ll gain more and more momentum and those daily obstacles ultimately become easier and easier to overcome.

Why? Not because it actually gets any easier.... It just becomes a part of your everyday business plan. Successful people are on a mission and they let nothing stop them from completing their mission.

If they’re unsure about how to do something that needs to get done, they LEARN HOW to do it...

If they’re unsure about how to use a program essential to running their business, they study and learn it until they do know how...

At times, they may even hire someone to do certain tasks that they feel they need specific help with, but they continually educate themselves and use all the available resources in their arsenal to overcome anything that tries to sway them from their focused path - a path that ultimately leads to success!

My point is this. If you aren't really, really committed to succeeding - if you're going to allow a few small hurdles or any necessary "learning curves" in business stop you from taking a new direction in life, a brighter, wealthier future, then to be perfectly honest with you, I don't know if this information will help you.

Succeeding in your own business will be the hardest yet most rewarding task you’ll ever endure in your lifetime. It needs to be taken very seriously! It will make you think and think again! And when you’re done thinking, it’s time to brainstorm. Then, guess what... time to think again!

If you're the type of person who isn't willing to take a bit of responsibility for yourself and learn some new skills that may be outside of your "comfort zone", or you're not willing to accept some failures and learn from them and move forward toward your ultimate goal, then I probably can't help you. (And I say that with "mucho" respect for you and truly do wish you all the luck and success in any ventures you choose to pursue in life).

But if you are really committed to succeeding and you are willing to take charge and learn some new skills to develop and strengthen your business then I congratulate you!

What business are you really in?

When considering starting a new business or even expanding an existing business by using a drop shipping supplier, there is one very important concept that you truly need to understand.

This one concept is so crucial to your success that I’ve actually seen entire businesses go from ZERO to THOUSANDS a month in profits once they REALLY understand this one concept and implemented it into their everyday business strategy.

If you truly have made the commitment to yourself to start making money online, there are a few simple but very important tasks you want to be able to do YOURSELF in order to accomplish your ultimate goal online which is – MAKE MONEY.

Because you're still reading this report, I know you're serious about making that commitment to yourself and your business.

Be forewarned however... there are a lot of "cookie cutter" solutions heavily marketed online. A lot of people try taking advantage of these "tools or websites in a box". They think these "all in one packages" are going to allow them to skip any learning curves and jump right into a successful "pre- built" online business - in the fast lane.

...WRONG!

Don't be misled into believing that! Below is a list of the most important - yet basic -things you'll absolutely need to have and learn - no questions asked - and I will be providing you all the tools you’ll need to accomplish and learn the skills necessary to succeed.

Understand this one final point before we dive into your lesson...

"If you're going to be successful online you need to start taking responsibility for yourself! You need to make your online business a success! You can't and won't fail! REMEMBER! Don't let any "technical hurdles" keep you from achieving your goals. Jump those hurdles as fast as you can.

1. You need to have YOUR OWN Domain name.

It doesn't really matter what the domain name is but you need to have one (at least one!) to start making good money online.

A great service but a little more expensive.

Don't do anything yet... We're going to talk more about this a bit later on...But know that you will need – WANT - to get your own domain name.

2. You need to be able to design a simple website and understand how to upload your products and any web pages (or any changes to existing pages, etc.) to the Internet on your own!

This is really important. If you don't know how to do this already... you will LEARN in this lesson! You can't rely on someone else to do it for you... and you really need to know how for your own sake.

To be perfectly honest it's a very simple task once you know how, especially with all the new "designer challenged" user friendly software available on the market today – many free.

I know that some of you will panic when you imagine the thought of having to design a web page on your own. Don't start biting your fingernails and worrying! It really is simple. I really can’t stress enough the importance of learning these skills yourself. And that’s what this lesson is mainly going to cover.

If you don’t want to learn right now, at least promise yourself you WILL LEARN in the near future...

Again, we’re going to cover this subject in more detail in this lesson. Plus I'll show you how to get all the tools and software you'll need FREE. Your job will only be to familiarize yourself with using them. You’re going to be able to design a "kick butt" site in no time!

3. You need to have a shopping cart.

Yes, you can use the PayPal cart if need be, but we’re going to go over another option that’s both FREE and much more advanced allowing you to customize your cart as needed.

4. You need to have an autoresponder service setup.

Whether you already have an existing mailing list or not, you will need to setup an autoresponder service and start collecting customer's email addresses.

This is the most important tool of all!

Free Autoresponder Service

The most important aspect of your business is going to be your ability to grab the email addresses of as many website visitors as you possibly can.

There have been hundreds of books and courses written just on this one crucial element of your business alone and its well beyond the scope of this lesson (but we'll discuss this more in future lessons).

For now, it’s simply imperative for you to know and understand that you need to setup an autoresponder service and collect as many email addresses as you can so you can follow up with your website visitors.

There’s a free autoresponder service that you can use immediately called
AutoBot. I haven’t used it personally, but I will say that I’ve read some great reviews about the service.

If you’re looking for a paid service (usually under $20 a month) I highly recommend
Aweber or GetResponse.

One other paid service option is BringYourBuddy. BringYourBuddy is just $10 per month and along with an autoresponder they have other tools that can help you build your business. Tools include an ad tracker / rotator, web hosting, audio creation software, url redirect service and more for just $10 per month. BringYourBuddy also has a multi-tiered pay plan, and I offer a free downline building tool to my team.

If you are an advanced internet marketer and would like to have our own autoresponder on your own web host, I recommend Parabots. I have been using Parabots on my web host for over two years and it works flawlessly.

If you can afford it, I highly recommend using one of the Paid Services above. I personally use Parabots (even to deliver this e-course) and I used Aweber before that. You really can't lose by using any of the paid services. Building your email list is imperative to your success and I don't recommend to want to evolve and grow as well to accommodate your needs and the needs of your customers. By learning how to add your own products, change page designs, add "capture and lead generation" forms, etc., you’ll be in total control. Once you have control, your possibilities are endless.

When you use a hosting service that provides a pre-built website, the amount of customization you can do to your site will usually be very limited. You need to be your own webmaster and take control of your online business to truly be successful.

2. Multiple Streams Of Net Income

Understand that in order to really see a large return on your investment (your time) you don’t want to limit yourself to ONLY the sale of physical goods - albeit drop shipped or not.

Yes, you will make a very nice profit on the products you sell and have drop shipped (and this will be one of the keys to your success) but you really want to focus on dominating an entire "niche" by using every part of your website as a selling tool (and we'll cover some of these issues in future lessons)

Let me just close this section with this thought...

The most important tool for your success online is going to be your website. No if’s and’s or but’s. Yes, you can sell exclusively on the online auctions, or perhaps you’re primarily interested in mail order campaigns in traditional publications. They are all great income sources. But bottom line is this...

You need a website to be successful online!

Your website will be your primary money generating tool. You will use your site to capture email addresses and follow up with your customers... And once you begin to build a large database of customers, this is when you’ll really see the big bucks rolling in.

Building Your Website From Scratch

Okay. Let’s jump right in and get your site setup correctly. The first thing you’ll want to do is download some software that will make this task a simple one.

I highly recommend you download
Web Builder Pro. This is a free web builder program that will allow you to accomplish many web building tasks just as easily as if you purchased some of the more sophisticated software programs available online today such as Microsoft Front Page or Macromedia Dreamweaver.

You can download your free copy of
Web Builder Pro Here. This software is free to use during the trial period , but once you’ve built your website using this software, you’ll need to purchase a license for commercial use at $24.95 (at the time of this writing). This is a real bargain… believe me – and probably one of the best investments you’ll make if you’re on a tight budget.

Once you have the software (and FREE add-on templates
) downloaded, take some time to read over

This report was downloaded thousands upon thousands of times by visitors to my website. More importantly, I built a database of targeted email addresses that allowed me to follow up with and "back-end" products to my list on a consistent basis.

I knew everyone who downloaded the report just got a new puppy. That made it simple to create highly effective email copy. So I provided GREAT content in my follow up emails, plus I continuously offered affiliate product endorsements for other products that generated incredible affiliate commissions for me.

I only had one small text link on the site to the product catalog that simply read "Visit My Gift Shop", and this link wasn't even available to anyone unless they'd already given me their email address.

This "gift shop" link took a visitor directly to a small online gift shop where I sold some unique pet products and also my coveted "Pet Memorials" for a nice additional income.

I also had a "ghost writer" write an entire 84 page book for me on "Your Puppy's Health and Well Being". I paid the ghost writer $150 to write the entire book and sold over 1200 copies of it for $10 each.

Here's the rounded off numbers from that site:

• Affiliate Sales = $29,000

• Book Sales = $12,000

In my humble opinion, it's very easy to make a full time living online. The techniques that need to be followed are so simple to adopt that a 12 year old could do it.

My $60,000 A Year Online "Pet Shop"

Before the Internet was even beginning to become so popular, I owned several websites related to Dogs and Cats. One site in particular was a site related to dog training.

Now the site wasn't about every aspect of training your dog. It was a "Laser-Targeted" website that dealt with the issue of housebreaking a new puppy.

This one site raked in just over $60,000 in one year from a simple 6 or 7 page site...

... More importantly though was how I made that money from the site...

I found a reputable drop ship supplier for pet related products and gifts, but I knew that if I were to put up a site that was an "e-store" just selling pet gifts I wouldn't make much money. I wouldn't make any money selling these items on eBay either. I needed to be clever...

So what I did was I created a simple site that was ONLY geared towards housebreaking a new puppy. A "highly targeted niche" that would have little competition in the search engines.

Then I setup my website with ONE PRIMARY FOCUS. Get everyone who visited the site to give me their email address. How did I get their email? Simple... I offered a free downloadable report titled:

"6 Simple And Effective Ways To Housebreak Your New Puppy In 7 Days Or Less"

This report was prominently displayed on the main page (capture page) of my site with nothing else!

There were no links to anything. You landed on my site and either downloaded the report or you didn't.

If you did decide to enter your email and download the report, you were then redirected into the website.
