FOSTER A SIAMESE
Siamese Rescue Metro (SRM) does not have a physical shelter to house our rescued Siamese, therefore we rely on a Foster Care System for our cats. This means that we depend on the loving hearts and generous nature of Siamese Lovers, just like you! Foster opportunities exist for both short-term (overnight or perhaps 2 nights) foster homes and long-term foster care (until the animal is adopted).
Currently our greatest need is for long term foster homes with experienced cat parents. Take a moment and read the FAQ's below. If you would like to request an application to become a foster parent please Contact us
FOSTER FAQS What is a foster home? A temporary home for Siamese cats recently pulled from shelters or surrendered by their owners. It is a place where love and patience help frightened and confused cats learn to trust again.
Who can become a foster parent? Anyone who fills out an application, meets our criteria, is personally interviewed and a home visit is sucessfully completed. will be submitted to the Director for approval to foster. The minimum requirements are listed below.
- All current cats are UTD on vaccinations, tested negative for Felv & FIV and are spayed or neutered.
- Has a room for isolating fosters on arrival that is heated in fall/winter and cooled in spring/summer.
- Computer with internet access and e-mail checked on a daily basis
- A person who is loving, patient and even-tempered, willing to set gentle boundaries for behavior and be consistent in enforcing them.
- Has a dependable vehicle available to them and an Emergency Vet clinic within 15 miles of their home.
- Able to afford food, litter and other daily cat care supplies without hardship to their family or current pets.
- TIME! Fostering, like parenting is a full-time job. A confused and frightened cat may require ten or more shor,. but frequent, interactions from you each day, in order to begin to trust again. This can take away from time spent with your family both two legged and four legged.
SRM asks that you seriously consider the amount of free time you currently have available and base your decision to foster after taking that into account. Who pays for veterinary care for foster cats? SRM pays the veterinary bills for pre-approved vet visits. This means you must obtain approval from the Foster director prior to making the appointment for routine care and follow-up visits.
What kinds of cats will I foster? All types! Please realize that the cats requiring long term fostering are those who aren't easily adoptable for various reasons. Long term fosters may include but not be limited to:
- Siamese pulled from shelters with URI, eye infection, ringworm, parasites and other infectious problems.
- Older Siamese, 12+
- Poorly socialized cats.
- Cats with behavior problems such as:
- Play aggression
- Nipping behaviors
- Fear of Humans, terrified of children,
- Inability to peacefully co-exist with other animals
- Litter box Issues
- Others
- Fosters who have been specially trained by our Foster Director may be allowed to foster pregnant Siamese and their subsequent litter. This requires a very long-term committment as SRM does not release its kittens to adopters until they are 12-14 weeks old. Please consider carefully before asking to foster a litter of kittens! While they are adorable and cute, they are a lot of work!
