My Internet Rules
  • I will not give out personal information such as my address, telephone number, parents work address/telephone numbers, or the name and location of my school without my parents permission.
  • I will tell my parents right away if I come across any information that makes me feel uncomfortable.
  • I will never agree to get together with someone I "meet" online without first checking with my parents. If my parents agree to the meeting, I will be sure that it is in a public place and bring my mother or father along.
  • I will never send a person my picture or anything else without first checking with my parents.
  • I will not respond to any messages that are mean or in any way make me feel uncomfortable. If I do, I will tell my parents right away so that they can contact the online service.
  • I will talk with my parents so that we can set up rules for going online. We will decide upon the time of day that I can be online, the length of time I can be online, and appropriate areas for me to visit. I will not access other areas or break these rules without their permission.
  • I will not download anything from anyone I don^t know.
Tips for Parents
  • Printout, sign and periodically review "house rules" regarding computer Internet use. Your rules should be posted on or near the monitor.
  • Research safe guarding programs or options your online service provider might offer. These can include monitoring or filtering capabilities.
  • Always read a web site^s privacy policy before giving any personal information. Also, make sure that a web site offers a secure connection before giving credit card information.
  • Inform your children that you will periodically monitor their e-mail accounts and web-site history.
  • Web sites for children are not to request personal information without a parent^s permission. Talk to children about what personal information is and why you should never give it to people online.
  • Talk to children about never meeting an online acquaintance face-to-face.
  • Do not respond to offensive or dangerous E-mail, chat, and other communication. Report it to local law enforcement.
  • Keep the computer in the family room or another open area of your home.
  • Get informed about computers and the Internet. Visit the parents^ resource list at www.netsmartz.org for additional information on Internet safety.
  • Spend time with your children online and visit their favorite sites or chat rooms.
  • Use child-friendly search engines when completing homework.
  • If you suspect online "stalking" or sexual exploitation of a child, report it to your local law-enforcement agency. Also, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (also known as NCMEC) has a system for tracking and apprehending online predators and child pornographers. It^s called the "CyberTipline." Leads forwarded to the site will be acknowledged and forwarded to the appropriate branch of law enforcement. Go to the home page of www.netsmartz.org for a link to the CyberTipline or go to www.CyberTipline.com.
