"MISSION POSSIBLE" - The Ghana Education and Outreach Tour.
2005

In 2005 Safe Haven had the pleasure of embarking on an
important educational and outreach mission in the nation of Ghana, West
Africa. In partnership with UNAIDS Ghana, The Ghana AIDS Commission,
The Live and Let Live Foundation and others, Safe Haven gathered a team
of individuals from the US including two HIV positive educators, a
Registered Nurse, a Safe Haven educator, two HIV positive educators
from Ghana, and representatives of our partners, to present current
honest information on the pandemic that is sweeping the African
continent. During the approximately two weeks of this first journey,
the team presented to over 15,000 young people and countless more
adults, tribal leaders, and elders. In addition, Safe Haven began its
investigation into the possibility of direct outreach to people in
Ghana who are living with HIV and AIDS.
This important effort
was extremely well received by those who attended. The team traveled
through several hundred miles of rugged terrain into villages and
outposts where presentations took place and many important discussions
ensued. Ultimately, many of those who participated expressed that they
learned a great deal, had myths challenged, and found a new perspective
on not only the pandemic and methods of prevention, but also the very
important need for compassion and outreach to those living with HIV and
AIDS.
Safe Haven plans to return to Ghana in January, 2008 to continue the education and outreach tour in as yet unvisited areas of the nation.
The possibility of future programs in Ghana depends directly upon the support of those who believe in the importance of this mission.
