Timothy Lavigne

Timothy Lavigne has been involved with The Safe Haven Project since he was a child. As a young person living with HIV, Tim has chosen to devote a considerable aspect of his life to service. Having first attended Safe Haven camps as a child, Tim has grown over the years, first becoming a counselor, then traveling with Safe Haven as part of the SPEAKOUT program. Today, Tim is studying marketing at Bryant College in Rhode Island and is a member of the Board of Directors of The Safe Haven Project.
Peggy Tileston, M.A. - M.T. - B.C.

Peggy Tileston has been a long-standing supporter of The Safe Haven Project. She is currently working as a therapist in Philadelphia, PA where she provides important services to young people in crisis. Peggy formerly lived on Martha's Vineyard where she was a therapist working with Island youth. In addition, Peggy was Program Director for the Island Youth Center. Among other areas of service, Peggy spearheaded an important program of support for abused women in Bosnia, and has consistantly stood in support of those around the world who have been disenfranchised.

Steve Shama, M.D., M.P.H.

Dr. Steve Shama has been on the medical staff of the New England
Deaconess Hospital and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center since 1981.
A
professional speaker, Steve is a member of the AMA, the American
Academy of Dermatology, the National Speakers Association and the
Creative Education Foundation. He is also on the teaching staff at
Harvard Medical School.
He has spoken to national and local
audiences since 1987. As an international keynote speaker and workshop
presenter, Steve's inspirational stories and concrete examples help
professionals and their families learn how to communicate and connect
in these difficult times - making it possible for them to rediscover
the joys of life.
Arthur J.
Culbert, Ph.D.
Associate Dean for Admissions, Boston University School of Public
Health
Positions: Associate Dean for Admissions; Associate
Professor, Department of Social & Behavioral Sciences; Associate
Chairman and Associate Professor, Department of Socio-Medical Sciences
and Community Medicine Boston University School of Medicine.
A faculty member and dean on campus since 1982, Dr. Culbert has
over 25 years of teaching experience in the fields of public health,
medical sociology, and medical education. Dr. Culbert has been a
pioneer, an innovator, and a leader in the fields of medical education
and more recently public health education.
In the 1980’s, he designed and implemented the Early Medical
School Selection Program, a nationally recognized model for the
recruitment and training of minority students in medicine. He served
as the Associate Dean of Student Affairs at Boston University School
of Medicine from 1991-2001.
For the first time in Boston University’s history, Professor
Culbert is teaching PH510, Introduction to Public Health to both
undergraduate and graduate students. Dr. Culbert recently developed
and directs the combined BS/MPH Program with Sargent College and
is involved in the design of a minor in public health to be offered
to undergraduate students at Boston University.
Dr. Culbert is a member of the Association of Schools of Public
Health task force on undergraduate public health education. Dr.
Culbert is an avid fitness enthusiast and a proponent of a balanced
healthy life style. He is an active member at the Sports Club LA
in Boston.
Beth Kramer (Martha's Vineyard Representative)
Beth Kramer resides on Martha's Vineyard and has been a stong advocate and supporter of The Safe Haven Project. Beth holds an undergraduate degree from UMass. in psychology and biology and has worked for several years with non profits in Western Mass. Beth has also received an MBA from UMass. Among many other things, Beth is involved in many Island initiatives including support programs for cancer survivors and development of the Island's YMCA program. Beth also teaches yoga and can often be found creating wonderful baked goods for many island programs. She and her husband, Douglas Reid have been involved with Safe Haven for over six years.
