Green It Up! In Riverdale

Nearly 40 concerned residents of Riverdale gathered to learn first-hand the role we can all play in supporting the local environment at the recent Green It Up panel on sustainable Riverdale. The town hall event was held at the Riverdale Y.
The panel was an exciting mix of leaders working to protect and sustain our local environment:
  • Councilmember G. Oliver Koppell is a leader in passing environmental legislation for providing a pollution-free environment and recycling.  Mr. Koppell is always the highest or among the highest scoring legislators on the Scorecard of the New York League for Conservation Voters.
  • David Hurd, Director of the Office of Recycling Outreach and Education at the Council on the Environment of New York City (CENYC), is a nationally-recognized expert in recycling program and market development, and community-based recycling enterprise initiatives with more than 29 years of experience.
  • Jessica Haller is completing a Masters of Public Administration in Environmental Science and Policy at Columbia University and the Earth Institute.  She was selected for The Climate Project, and was trained by Al Gore to engage the community on issues relating to climate change.  She is also the recipient of local Community Board 8’s Community Service Award for raising awareness of environmental issues.
  • Hilary Baum is president of Baum Forum/ Public Market Partners, a not-for-profit corporation, and was the founding coordinating director of Food Systems Network NYC, an emerging collaboration of agencies and individuals engaged in work that furthers access to wholesome, regional food. She is a board member of Friends of Van Cortlandt Park, the Hawthorne Valley Association, Riverdale CSA, and is an advisor to the NYC Wholesale Farmers' Market.
  • Dan Avery, Sustainability and Climate Change Program Manager for the New York Botanical Garden, spent several years in the Mayor's Office of Environmental Coordination, and at the New York City Council, where he was the Policy Analyst for the Environmental Protection Committee and the Committee on Sanitation and Solid Waste Management.
  • Omar Freilla, Founder and Director of the Green Worker Cooperative, an organization dedicated to the creation of worker-owned and environmentally friendly businesses in the South Bronx. He has been named one of "The New School of Activists Most Likely to change New York City" by City Limits magazine (2000). Raised in the South Bronx, where he continues to live, he has gained international recognition as an outspoken environmental justice activist who has dedicated himself to seeking solutions to the disproportionate environmental impacts faced by low-income communities of color.
Rachel Rosenfield, of the Riverdale Y, and Dan Eudene, Executive Director of RNH, co-moderated the event, which was co-sponsored by City Councilman Oliver Koppell, the Riverdale Y, the Riverdale Neighborhood House, the Riverdale Nature Preservancy, and CENYC.
