Arbor Day 2009

The NJ Arbor Day Celebration took place on Friday, April 24, 2009 at Christie Hoffman Park in Tewksbury, NJ.  Over 200 volunteers, tree professionals, members of the community, and staff planted 187 trees and shrubs throughout four different municipal parks.  Christie Hoffman Farm Park was our largest planting location as well as our main site, where the Arbor Day ceremony was held.  The other parks that received trees were Fairmount North, Pascale Park, and Oldwick Playing Fields.  A variety of trees were planted in the parks, in order to provide shade, beauty, wind breaks, and so many other benefits, including: our state tree, Northern red oaks (Quercus rubra) and Flowering dogwoods (Cornus florida), NJ's memorial tree.

Arbor Day 2009 was a widespread celebration and widely accepted and recognized by the community.  Residents and youth of Tewksbury and neighboring communities have stepped up to the challenge and adopted each of the new trees to ensure proper care and maintenance, and a long healthy life.

This year's event was a success and would not have been possible without the support of our partners, sponsors, and dedicated volunteers!  Thank you for celebrating with us!

Arbor Day 2007

For the ninth consecutive year, the Tree Foundation partnered with the New Jersey Forest Service to conduct the State Arbor Day Event. This year, Arbor Day was on April 27, 2007, and themed Community Forestry at its Best.

The site for this year’s Arbor Day event was Sunset Lake Park in Asbury Park, NJ. This Park was chosen because the Asbury Park Shade Tree and Environmental Commission saw the need to plant 100 trees to replace trees that have died off over the years. Sunset Lake Park is a jewel in the midst of an urban city, and the trees will provide beauty and shade for years to come.

Beginning at 8am, on a rainy day in Asbury Park, volunteers began to arrive and assist in planting the trees. Approximately 200 volunteers, a combination of Certified Tree Experts, NJ Youth Corps students and community volunteers planted the 100 cherry trees, along with ornamental grasses to deter geese, and roses to beautify the Veterans Memorial in the Park. To round out the day, The Arbor Day Ceremony included Tree City USA and Arbor Day Contest awards, and entertainment by Wayne D. Hughley and the Asbury Park High School Marching Band.

Arbor Day Note Card Art Contest 2007

This year, NJ Community Forestry & Tree Foundation partnered to host the annual Arbor Day art contest themed, "Celebrating Community Forestry & Arbor Day".  More than 1,100 NJ students submitted original art work for the contest, from Kindergarten through 12th grade.  Staff and fellow NJ DEP employees assisted in selecting the best art work in each grade that demonstrates this years theme.  All 1st place winners art work was produced into a set of Arbor Day note cards (13 cards and envelopes total).  The winners were recognized at the Arbor Day 2007 event for their contribution to celebrating community forestry!

Thank you to all of the youth who participated!  NJ has a very talented group of artists, and we appreciate you sharing your talent with us.  The note card sets are available for purchase through the NJ Tree Foundation.

Arbor Day 2006

Imagine planting 425 large trees and shrubs in less than three hours! That’s what happened when the NJ Tree Foundation and 238 volunteers got together for Arbor Day this year. Corporate volunteers, NJ Youth Corps students and Certified Tree Experts planted trees to provide shade for a newly installed Outdoor Learning Center called “Roots of Discovery”. Once completed, the “Roots of Discovery” learning center will feature walking trails, benches and vegetation to be used by the school and the Paramus community. The New Jersey Tree Foundation, in partnership with the New Jersey Community Forestry Program and the City of Paramus, hosted the State Arbor Day Event on Friday, April 28, 2006 at Paramus High School in Bergen County.

"Arbor Day offers us an opportunity to renew our commitment to planting and caring for trees in New Jersey so that our residents and future generations can appreciate the beauty and immeasurable value they bring to our lives," Governor Corzine said at the Arbor Day Ceremony. The NJ Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) presented Tree City USA awards to communities marking their 30th, 25th, 20th and 1st anniversaries and the prestigious Joyce Kilmer Award, which honors individuals who have demonstrated a strong commitment to New Jersey's community forests. The DEP also recognized the winners of the Arbor Day book contest for students.

For this year's Arbor Day the Tree Foundation held an original artwork and essay contest for students grades K-12.  The theme was "Arbor Day and Community Forestry in NJ".  The Tree Foundation recieved several hundred entries of beautiful, original artwork created by students from across the state.  Each grade had a topic to write a short story about and create original artwork to coincide.  The book is a collection of short stories and art work from the 1st place winners of the 2006 Arbor Day Art Contest.

The New Jersey Tree Foundation, in partnership with the New Jersey Community Forestry Program, the Township of Phillipsburg and Phillipsburg Youth Corps, hosted the State Arbor Day Event. The State Arbor Day event was held Friday, April 29, 2005 from 8:00 am until 2:00 pm at Delaware Heights Park in Phillipsburg, Warren County.

Over two hundred and fifty large trees and shrubs were planted in Delaware Heights Park and another 500 tree saplings were planted at the Phillipsburg Youth Corps Tree Farm. New Jersey Youth Corps chapters, the Phillipsburg Shade Tree Commission, students, and other volunteers planted the trees beginning at 8:00 am. NJ Tree Foundation and NJ DEP Community Forestry staff supervised all volunteers. The NJ Department of Environmental Protection’s Arbor Day Ceremony began at 11:00 am and included Tree City USA awards, the prestigious Joyce Kilmer Award and awards to this year's student winners of a state note card art contest at an Arbor Day Ceremony.

The New Jersey Tree Foundation is a statewide, non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion, enhancement and development of urban and community forestry activities in New Jersey through education, volunteerism, community outreach, partnerships, and grants. Arbor Day Note Card Art Contest 2005

The NJ Tree Foundation in partnership with the NJ Community Forestry Program held an original art work contest in honor of Arbor Day. The theme was "Arbor Day and Community Forestry in NJ". We received several hundreds of beautiful, original art work created by students ranging from grades Pre-K through 12th grade. Anonymous judges assisted in voting for the top three pieces of art work from each grade. Our First Place contest winners had their art work made into a set of note cards. Each note card set contains 1 card for all 13 of our First Place winners and envelopes to go with them.

We thank each and every person who worked hard and submitted their work to us. All of your art work remains on our walls and in our minds as an inspiration to keep working hard and celebrating New Jersey's community forests!

Arbor Day 2004

This year, the State Arbor Day Event was held at a 4-acre woodlot in Haddon Heights, Camden County. Arbor Day focused on managing a community woodlot - hazardous tree removal, pruning, maintenance and restoration of this 4-acre site, and converting the area into an outdoor classroom for use by the adjacent elementary school. Additionally, six forestry-related stations educated over 200 local students. To round out the day, the Arbor Day Ceremony included speeches by local dignitaries, entertainment, awards presentations and the ceremonial Arbor Tree planting with state and local officials.
