Newark Renaissance Trees Program

Planting Trees Today, For a Greener Tomorrow

Why Plant Trees?

Trees add beauty and grace to any community setting. Trees and greenery bring nature to a neighborhood, promote more use of the outdoor areas by residents, and can build stronger social relations.

Trees store carbon and clean the atmosphere. In 50 years, one mature tree generates $30,000 in oxygen, recycles $35,000 of water, and removes $60,000 of air pollution. USDA Forest Service

A large shade tree can intercept 760 gallons of rainfall in its crown each year, reducing the runoff of polluted stormwater and flooding. USDA Forest Service, Davis, CA

Landscaping, especially with trees, can increase property value by as much as 20%. The Arbor Day Foundation

Homeowners who properly place trees in their landscape can realize savings up to 58% on daytime air conditioning costs. USDA Forest Service, Davis, CA

Reduced air pollution from the presence of trees helps to ameliorate respiratory problems, such as asthma - the leading serious chronic illness among children. USDA Forest Service

As of June 2009, the Newark Renaissance Trees Program has planted 597 large shade and flowering trees throughout Newark neighborhoods.  Since the program inception, more than 2,200 residents, students, and volunteers have donated their time to make the NRTP a great grassroots program.

Thank you to all of our volunteers, sponsors, funders, and our partners for making this spring tree planting season a success! I look working with all of you in the fall!

The NJ Tree Foundation has initiated a special reforestation program for the City of Newark, titled the Newark Renaissance Trees Program (NRTP).  Through a partnership with the City of Newark, the NJ Tree Foundation is able to work with residents and schools to organize community tree plantings and adoptions.

This program is a FREE program open to almost anyone in Newark who is interested in bringing trees back to their neighborhood.  Applications are available year long to apply for a fall or spring neighborhood tree planting.

Residents and schools interested in planting trees in their neighborhood, agree to adopt the tree, assist in maintaining (watering, weeding, and mulching) the tree for the first year, and attending a community meeting to learn about proper tree care.

The Newark Renaissance Trees Program emphasizes community-based tree plantings, involving residents and students alike.  Through the hard work of planting a tree, residents feel a sense of ownership and will care for the tree to ensure its survival.  Neighborhood tree plantings create a sense of community pride, and respect for nature.

Through the Newark Renaissance Trees Program, residents and youth are becoming greater stewards of the environment and enriching the community's quality of life...One tree at a time.

The goals of the Newark Renaissance Trees Program are:
Connecting people to our environment
  • Building forestry stewardship
  • Increasing the tree canopy cover in the City of Newark
  • Educating residents about trees and trees care, especially planting the right tree for the right place
  • Empowering communities to make a difference
  • Enhancing the environment and quality of life for all to benefit
