Green Streets Cool Schools

A Tree Planting and Transitional Jobs Program funded by DuPont

The New Jersey Tree Foundation, in partnership with DuPont, is planting trees along streets and at schools in the Lower Passaic and Arthur Kill Watersheds. This project, called Green Streets - Cool Schools educates urban residents and students in the importance of urban forestry while creating lush green corridors and school grounds. The Tree Foundation is also partnering with the New Jersey State Parole Board to hire a seasonal tree planting crew, creating transitional jobs for individuals under parole supervision. Transitional jobs are time-limited jobs that combine real work, skill development and support services to help participants overcome barriers to employment. In three years, this program has planted 6,073 trees and employed 29 parolees.

The New Jersey Tree Foundation, in partnership with Verizon New Jersey, Inc., plants trees along streets and at schools in some of New Jersey’s most urban areas. This project, called Green Streets - Cool Schools educates urban residents and students in the importance of urban forestry while creating lush green corridors and school grounds. All tree plantings are done by volunteers with the support of the city, and supervised by NJ Tree Foundation staff.

The NJ Tree Foundation partners with cities in New Jersey to plant shade trees along streets, in parks and at schools. These tree plantings occur in Spring and Fall of each year and are conducted by volunteers, school children and residents under the supervision of tree planting experts. A minimum of ten trees are planted in each participating city, and a maximum is determined based on the tree planting site. This initiative is a partnership project between the School/City and the NJ Tree Foundation, and is being funded by Verizon New Jersey, Inc. Future schools/cities may apply to the Tree Foundation to participate in the Green Streets– Cool Schools program by contacting Lisa Simms, Director, at 609-984-3856 or email at njtf1@juno.com.

Phillipsburg, the first city chosen to receive trees, was planted with over 250 trees and shrubs at Delaware Heights Park this past Arbor Day 2005. Over 150 volunteers, including ten NJ Youth Corps chapters, planted the trees and shrubs, with Certified Tree Experts, Tree Foundation staff, and other tree planting professionals. “This Arbor Day was a wonderful success due to the hard work of all of the volunteers. Delaware Heights Park was barren of trees three hours ago, and now Green Ash, Maple, Zelkova and Oak trees are already creating shade for the ball fields”, said Lisa Simms, Director of the NJ Tree Foundation.
