Only about 9% of MHS clients were employed full-time, part-time, or in a sheltered or supported employment program. More than two-thirds of those employed were clients of the Mobile Crisis Team.
Of the 1,816 clients of MHS homeless assistance programs, 105 (6%) had a part- or full-time job, and 114 (6%) were recorded as "other," a category that staff members used for those who had intermittent employment (mostly at temporary agencies or for special events). Nearly all clients listed as "Inmate of an Institution" were prisoners referred to MCT for enrollment into the community mental health system upon their release.
Consistent with the employment status presented earlier, information in the table below shows that only about 9% of MHS clients reported wage or salary income from employment. Of the 8,359 clients whose primary income source was known, nearly half (49%) had no income, or were supported by family members or relatives.
Of the 1,816 homeless and disabled clients who participated in any of the MHS homeless assistance programs, about one in five (21%) had Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Social Security Disability Income (SSDI) at the time of intake and admission to MHS programs. This percentage is remarkably stable, having varied by only one to two percent during the past three fiscal years.
