EVISTA (Raloxifene) by Phyllis S. Cotsis on 9/26/2007 8:14:38 AM

Message EVISTA (Raloxifene) was posted by Phyllis S. Cotsis, on 9/26/2007 8:14:38 AM.

I am a 12 year survivor of breast cancer. My treatment consisted of 6 month chemotherapy (which put me into menopause) and 5 years of Tamoxifen. Since then I get regular check-ups with my Oncologist who draws blood for a "tumor marker" test which isn't very significant. I have always been afraid of metatastic cancer since I've heard so many stories about women who've survived for so many years and then -- all of a sudden -- their cancer metatasized and they become terminal.
Just recently, by OB/GYN prescribed Evista for osteopenia (precursor to osteoperosis). I was on Fosamax for about 5 years and took myself off the drug when there was some news about its side effects. After suffering back pain and a knee arthoscopy, I decided to go back on Fosamax but my doctor encourage me to take Raloxifene (EVISTA). I haven't filled the prescription yet, beacuse I am trying to get all the information I can first. I checked with my Oncologist who approved my taking the drug prescribed by my OB/GYN. However, I am looking for some opinion by people who may be on EVISTA or may have found out a little more about it. For instance, taking Evista for breast cancer, the treatment is for 5 years. Taking the drug for osteopenia, should it be taken for the rest of my life? Although the side effects have something to do with blood clots, I do not believe I am at a high risk for the side effects. But as my husband puts it, "what happens if you take Evista for the rest of your life -- you keel over?" I've read the research and I know this is a new drug so there is nothing to address long-term effects. I guess I'm looking for some support yea or ney. . . PSC
