Domestic Violence

Spanish/Español

Domestic violence is a pattern of abusive behavior used to gain power and control over another person in a relationship.

Domestic violence may take many forms. It can be the occasional slap or push. It can be threats of physical harm, or even death. It can be control over the lives of others, the refusal to let someone work, go to school, or leave the house. It can be threats to deport someone, take away one’s children, or ruin one’s reputation.

Domestic violence is not only physical threats or harm. It can be emotional, verbal, sexual, or economic abuse. It can take place within a marriage, a dating relationship, a gay or lesbian relationship, a former marriage, or a former dating relationship.

Domestic violence can take place in a relationship regardless of race, ethnicity, country of origin, economic or financial situation, level of education, age, and use or abuse of alcohol or drugs.
