Kyle Bucy is a first-year, full-time, ARRA (American Recovery and Reinvestment Act) VOCAL AmeriCorps member, who serves at both Literacy Volunteers of Illinois’ downtown office and IYC-Chicago. His duties include grant research and writing, tutoring English and Math, administering diagnostic testing and coordinating tutors.
Prior to joining the VOCAL program, Kyle was a second-grade ESL teacher at The Prince Royal’s College in Chiang Mai, Thailand. At Western Oregon University, Kyle was an international student academic English tutor and M.A. thesis editor. He was also a research assistant at the University of Chicago.
Kyle’s community involvement and volunteer activities include assisting with reforestation, gardening, landscaping and construction in Mindo, Ecuador. He has been involved with general maintenance at Hosteria Las Ruinas de Quinara in Vilcabamba, Ecuador.
Kyle holds a B.A. with Honors in English and Philosophy from the University of Oregon; TEFL Certificate from Via Ligua in Cornith, Greece; and a M.A. in English and Humanities from the University of Chicago. Kyle graduated summa cum laude and was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa honor society.
