Mixed media digitized hand drawn "etching" (hand rendered drawing through asphaltum ground on zinc etching plate, scanned, inverted and pigmented on photoshop and printed on Epson 2200 inkjet printer with 100 year lightfast inks).

This synthesis of the ancient etching process utilized by Durer and Rembrandt with computer generated or "enhanced" archival inkjet prints is a birthing, perhaps, unique in the history of printmaking.
Astrid drew the drawing with a sharp steel stylus through a black waxy coat of asphaltum into a rectangular sheet of zinc. Normally the piece would be dipped in acid (etched) at this point. However Astrid's lines were almost microscopic and so close together the acid would have "underbit" ruining the image. Astrid suggested scanning the plate. The plate looked like this when Astrid did the rendering, before scanning and then inverting.
The subject, Sonya, is a neighbor from the streets of Skid Row. NOTE: BELOW IS A GRAPHITE RENDERING BY ASTRID (MAGDALENA) ALSO OF SONYA. Sonya.

Pictured directly below is Diana Jefferies, poet laureate of of Lamp.
Art, poetry, and performance work, done by ourselves,
not only mirror ourselves, but infuse the plenum of our daily living,
our community, with the validating reality that "we are our own mirror".
The Lamp Art Project is a microcosm and a mirror. It is a microcosm of
of Skid Row and of the world of the homeless mentally
ill in Skid Row.
We exist in a community, marginalized through the commonality of diagnoses of mental illnesses.
We exist within a larger society that does not quite yet fathom us.
Neither does the larger society fathom the formative and other functionally defining issues of the extreme inner city.
But art is the mirror of society and the conscience of society.
Only through the "outsider" realm of ALL art, and its absolute subjectivity,
can a truly objective moral picture be communicated of society.
Pythagoras claimed that he could move the planet earth
if he were but given a point outside the earth to use as his fulcrum.
Art exists outside the normal functions and domains of society.
Art is thus "outside the world".
Our "outside", furthermore, is the ironic alien world of the encapsulated extreme inner city.
Pythagoras longed for a fulcrum outside the world.
We, in Skid Row, are, outside the world.
Art is the mirror and we are the fulcrum.
We shall move the world.
