Magdalena Astrid Dahlen. Graphite on Paper.



Astrid did this drawing free hand from "life". She worked directly from a strongly lighted wood sculpture in the Art Project studio. The sculpted figure was carved by 1930's *WPA artist, Maxine Albro (cohort of Diego Rivera and co-painter of the Coit Tower Murals).

Few people stop to think that many of our greatest artists were supported by the government (*WPA = The Worker's Progress Administration) during the Great Depression.

As a result, the artists did not starve to death and the country received such a wealth of these artists' work, in public commissions, murals & relief sculpture, that the United States is now considered one of the richest countries in Artistic Genius and Heritage....
