4. Sponsor of the Month California ReLeaf Martha Ozonoff, Executive Director, Elisabeth Hoskins, Grant Coordinator. 1107 Ninth Street, Suite 1050, Sacramento, California 95814 916 557-1673. California ReLeaf is a program of the Trust for Public Land. As the Trust for Public Land's urban forestry program, they work with the California Department of Forestry and over 50 Network partner nonprofit organizations to involve the residents of California in urban and community forestry on a local level. In mid-2003, California ReLeaf will become a program of the National Tree Trust.
GVB is the recipient of a $5,000 California ReLeaf Capacity Building Grant Program for the GVB 2003 Tree Maintenance Project. You'll note from our schedule the increased number of Sunday afternoon tree pruning and maintenance projects, funded in large part from this grant. Our intent through this grant is to develop a stronger volunteer base educated in proper shade tree pruning and maintenance techniques, who in turn will help promote the GVB goal of individuals taking responsibility for the nurturing of our public forest. This is the third competitive grant we have received from California ReLeaf in the last two years, and we are grateful for their support.
5. GVB News Tidbits
Membership Campaign - If you receive an e-mail or phone message from Membership Coordinator Janel Smit, that means your donor membership renewal is overdue. Much of our general operating expenses is covered by the generosity of our member donors. If you haven't yet mailed in your donor membership, the new Goleta Valley Beautiful forest green polo shirts have arrived, free with a $60 membership. Note that the date of donor membership expiration is on the outside front of the flier we mailed in September. If you misplaced your flier, please use the form in this newsletter. Please don't wait for us to contact you, as we may have an incorrect e-mail, phone or mail address.
Water Kings and Queens - We've had no rain in January, and as of the beginning of February there is no rain in the forecast. So we ask all of you who have been watering your trees this past summer to please put a hose out to the edge of your tree's rootball (generally about 1 foot from the trunk) and leave the water on for about an hour or two every two weeks until it rains. The water should not flow off the tree site, if it is, turn down the flow of water.
This is a temporary measure until the rains return. We'll be installing Treegators later this spring on trees that need them.
GVB Board Members Vacancies - Due to an unexpected increase in workload at work, recently inducted new Board member Emilio Casaneuva from UCSB has regretfully resigned from the GVB Board. We now have two Board member vacancies. Members are always encouraged to participate occasionally on our 5 primary Committees: Urban Forestry, Residential Awards, Business Awards, Public Area Beautification/Government Monitoring, and Educational Programs, as well as ongoing fundraising and membership programs. Call 252-1952 to participate.

Optimist Grove Tree Maintenance - On January 12 and 26, 25 volunteers contributed 60 volunteer hours and made several mountains of debris from pruning the 90 oaks at Optimist Grove in Lake Los Carneros Park. We also replaced two oaks that we think succumbed to gopher damage. Thanks to media ads, we had a lot of dedicated volunteers. We got through approximately 2/3 of the trees, and we'll be back to finish later in February. Special thanks to Arborist Dan Condon, to Optimist Club and Goleta Valley Beautiful volunteers, and to County Park staff for removing all the trimmings.
Page Youth Center Tree Maintenance - Volunteer turnout was very light at Page Youth Center tree maintenance event held during the Martin Luther King Holiday Weekend. But we managed to trim most of the trees in the front of the Center. We'll schedule another session to take care of the trees in the rear of the center and in the parking lot.
Tree Plantings - GVB received approval in January to initiate it's tree planting contract with the City of Goleta. During January, we've planted 5 Chinese Pistache on Lyon, and 16 Australian Willows along N. Kellogg with the help of Tri-Counties Boot Camp crews. We're planting about 5 trees a week, which includes installing root shields in previously root infested areas. Now that we're planting, we're getting calls from people who previously said they didn't want any trees. Several have changed their minds and now want a tree. We'll accommodate all our budget will allow.
In addition, we planted 15 replacement oak trees at Los Carneros Park using tree stock grown from local acorns by Dougal House. We also replace 3 Brisbane Box trees along Cathedral Oaks Road, casualties of the heavy rains early this year which drowned some

Board of Directors Meeting
February 7, 2003
Present: Kathy Curtis, Al Turnbull, Merlyn Cummings, Cherie Welsh, Ross Harris, Doug Winter and Ken Knight.
1. Call to order - Merlyn
1.1. In the absence of Sam Alfano, Merlyn served as Chairman for the meeting. The meeting was opened at 7:32 am, in the Sexton House facility of the Pacifica Suites.
1.2. It was announced that Emilio Casanueva had resigned from the Board due to an unexpected increase in his workload at UCSB. He will still be available for special projects.
1.3. It was announced that Janel Smit had resigned from the Board due to health reasons and an increased workload.
1.4. It was announced that Board Member Kristen Miller has married and that her new name is Kristen Amyx.
2. Secretarys Report - Doug
2.1. The January 3 minutes were approved by Al and seconded by Cherie as written.
2.2. Doug read the GVB Executive Board Minutes and they were approved.
3. Treasury Report Cherie
3.1. January income was far below the budget due to low receipts from membership renewals
3.2. January expenses were under budget due to two factors: Workmans Comp had not been paid as budgeted and budgeted expenses for contract work had not been realized in January.
3.3. The treasury report was approved by Al and seconded by Kathy as presented.
3.4. Ken announced that Wells Fargo has granted GVB $10,000 with the understanding that GVB will maintain the Wells Fargo historical stage coach signs. Cherie will revise the budget to reflect this change.
4. Presidents Report Ken for Sam
4.1. Board Skills Inventory discussion will be deferred until the March meeting.
4.2. Recommendations for the filling of the First and Second V.P. positions were discussed during the Executive Board Meeting.
4.2.1. Janel Smit was recommended for First V.P., however she has since resigned from the GVB Board.
4.2.2. Judy Thiele was recommended for the Second V.P. position, which includes fundraising planning. Judy has accepted the offer.
4.3. Ken announced new events to be added to the GVB annual calendar. GVB project tree planting is scheduled for Friday mornings and tree maintenance i.e. trimming is generally scheduled for Sunday afternoons, however pruning of the trees at the Goleta Youth baseball field is schedule for Saturday afternoon, March 8 & 15. On April 11, trees will be pruned at the Page Youth Center.
4.4. Santa Barbara Air Bus has again donated a bus for the Tree Tour scheduled for June 29, 10:30 to 4:00.
4.5. Ken suggested that GVB should consider manning a booth for Fiesta, July 29 to August 3. He recommended that GVB consider selling Blinkies in addition to churros or some other food item as a fundraiser. Al replied that he had heard that they were not a successful item for a fundraiser. The Optimists, who are currently selling them at the Fiesta, are not going to continue to sell them. Their stock could probably be obtained. Ken said he would further study the viability of the idea.
4.6. March is scheduled as Arbor month.
4.7. The Annual Awards Banquet is scheduled for May 17 at 6 pm. Merlyn needs to prepare an implementation plan for the banquet so all involved know what is expected of them.
4.8. Judy Thiele needs contacts for potential Advisory Council members.
4.9. Ken is investigating as to how GVB can take part in the Goleta fireworks program for the 4th of July.
5. Membership Janel
5.1. Ken will assume Janels membership responsibilities for now.
6. Website Report Thom
6.1. In the absence of Thom, Ken reported that the newsletter had been integrated into the website successfully.
7. Urban Forestry Committee
7.1. Ken reported that GVB has projects scheduled for every week through the 2nd week of April.
8. Neighborhood Committee Ross
8.1. No award recipient has been identified for February.
8.2. The current source for sign maintenance and fabrication has closed his business. Ross will identify a new source by February 15. Some sign redesign may be required.
9. Business Committee Kathy
9.1. Super Conductor Technologies, 460 Ward Dr, has been nominated to receive the award for February.
9.2. Kathy indicated that she planned to give the award in March to the Mountain View Ranch subdivision. Ken cautioned Kathy to look into this nomination further. The use of Carrot wood trees may not be a significant problem if the trees are maintained (they are) and the trees were planted with an extensive root shield. Ross offered to provide Kathy with some suggestions for March.
10. Education Committee Al & Cherie
10.1. Al reported that the Arbor Day education was well under control.
11. Government Doug
11.1. Doug and Ken met with the City of Goleta Design Review Board (DRB) on January 21, to provide a summary of the Prop 12 planting plan for the City of Goleta. Ken indicated that the planting would be scoped to 24 streets only. A case was presented for planting larger trees near sidewalks in parks where possible. The DRB was supportive of the presentation. The next DRB presentation is scheduled for February 18.
11.2. Doug attended the GV Chamber of Commerce meeting on January 14. The topic concerned control of ground water runoff pollution. A bioswale is being constructed at the bottom of Turnpike Rd to filter pollution. This area could offer opportunities for GVB to plant.
11.3. Doug and Ken attended the Goleta City Planning Agency meeting on January 27 where the topic was the development of the City General Plan. Ken emphasized that the urban forest, as a City asset, needs to be covered under the Public Utility section rather than under Natural Resources. Council members OConnell and Brock were in agreement.
12. Executive Directors Report Ken
12.1. The Embarcadero Improvement District has opted out of participation in our Proposition 12 efforts for 2003.
12.2. The County Fire Department wants a memorial grove established at the Fire Administration Bldg. on Cathedral Oaks.
12.3. Ken is trying to line up additional storage at Girsh Park and has offered to maintain their trees.
12.4. Ken has offered to maintain the trees at the El Camino Real Shopping Center to allow continued storage there.
12.5. Raytheon has requested that GVB take the lead in recurring clean up of the freeway on the Southside. The sign showing credit would now indicate GVB instead of Raytheon, however Raytheon would continue to provide employee volunteers to work under GVB direction. Ken will contact our volunteer base for a consensus as to whether or not this is an attractive idea.
Merlyn adjourned the Board Meeting at 8:39 am.
