    4. GVB News Tidbits
Membership Campaign - Over the next several weeks, GVB will be sending membership recruitment letters to residents and businesses in the 93117 and part of 93111 ZIP codes. We only have enough funds for one partial mailing, so we'll evaluate the results and send letters in the Spring (in conjunction with our Annual Banquet in May) to the remaining residents and businesses in the 93111 and 93110 ZIP code areas. These letters are going to people who are not current donor members of Goleta Valley Beautiful. Our annual membership renewals for our current donors will be mailed in the near future. If you are reading this newsletter and you are not a donor member, you don't have to wait for our letter--simply use the form that is at the end of every GVB Newsletter. Your dollars not only help keep our award and tree management programs going, but they also allow us to provide training and community service projects for our youth, and improve the quality of life in the Goleta Valley, which is reflected in higher property values and a positive mental framework of our residents. Please note that you can now use your Visa or MasterCard for membership donations.
Tree Planting Projects Delayed, Maintenance continues- Our October tree planting projects are being postponed to November while State officials complete the administrative processing of grants awarded last June. We hope to begin weekly tree plantings beginning the first week of November with an Eagle Scout Project led by Ted Kwan of Troop 105. In the interim, we'll be concentrating on maintenance projects.
GVB Board Member changes - Unfortunately, our newest GVB Board of Director Kathy Lucian submitted her resignation to devote her time to care for an ailing brother living out of town. The GVB Nominating Committee is continuing its search for three more Board of Directors candidates to serve the remainder of one year terms that began August 2003. Candidates should be familiar with the mission and goals of Goleta Valley Beautiful (see the end of this Newsletter) and be willing to provide policy direction for implementing these goals. Goleta Valley Beautiful is committed to a diverse representation of interests on the Board that reflects the Goleta Valley population. If you are interested in serving, please contact Sam Alfano at 967-0595.

September 13 Day of Caring Project at the County Fire Administration Campus, 4410 Cathedral Oaks Road. -County Fire Chief John Scherrei headed a team of 75 volunteers that planted 47 native oak trees in groves along the entrance road. The oaks were provided by Growing Solutions and the County Farm Bureau and all were grown from locally harvested acorns. County Fire and Park Departments provided heavy equipment for digging holes and moving mulch. Volunteers installed an extensive drip irrigation system to water the trees, with support from the Kitson Landscape Management crews which have ongoing maintenance responsibility for the site. Volunteers also planted 60 one-gallon Cotoneaster dammeri groundcover that will reduce maintenance costs as it fills in within a few years. The plants were provided at deep discount by our good friend Randy Baldwin at San Marcos Growers. Volunteers spread several tons of processed green waste mulch from the County Transfer Station, supplied by our longtime supporter Richard Placencia of County Public Works Solid Waste. Thanks also to Julie at Western Farm Supply for providing discounts for fertilizer tablets and several bags of soil amendments. Island Feed and Seed also supported the effort with discounts for the Coconut Peat (yep, it's made out of coconut shells) that we used as soil amendment. We appreciate the support of all those who organized and participated in the annual United Way Day of Caring. We look forward to another great event next year.
Tri-Counties Boot Camp Tree maintenance - - Larry Chavez and10 TCBC boys spent 40 service hours on September 5 moving trees and getting the Fire Department site ready for the Sept 13 Day of Caring. Ms Hensic and 10 Los Prietos Boys Camp boys were part of the volunteer group on September 13 that helped plant the trees and install groundcover (50 service hours). Our final September project on the 26th included John Nickels and 6 TCBC boys who planted 6 Coast Live Oaks (again, grown from local seed) at the David Wells residence along 880 Cambridge Drive. This area, across from a previous planting project at Oro Verde Park, was also mulched by the boys in a 36 service hour project. GVB hopes to continue additional planting projects at this address in the future.
Cathedral Oaks Watering - In our continuing commitment to maintaining the trees along Cathedral Oaks and Los Carneros Roads, we watered 120 trees on September 14 with the assistance of students Matt Cavalli and Andrew Gonzales for a total of 11 service hours.
GVB Website problems.   The company that registered our website name neglected to send us a renewal notice, so our website cannot be directly accessed. However if you had bookmarked our website address through Charity Advantage, our web server, you may still access our site.  We hope to have access to our website resolved by the second week in October, so please be patient. In the interim, you can reach our site through http://www.charityadvantage.com/GoletaValleyBeautiful/Home.asp
Self Guided Tour of Goleta Valley Trees - Thanks to the Goleta City Council for a Community Project Grant of $750 to prepare a Self Guided Tour of Goleta Valley Trees. This tour is an extension of our annual Heritage Tree Tour. The Tour Map and descriptions, designed to be viewed or downloaded from our website, is now available at www.goletavalleybeautiful.org Please check it out and let us know what you think.
Stagecoach sign Map and Tour - Almost 5 years ago, GVB worked with several local historical organizations to identify historical stage coach stops between downtown Santa Barbara and Mattei's Tavern in Santa Ynez. GVB Board members Thom Myall and Doug Winter recently replaced several damaged signs with new signs prepared by Benton Signs. The renovation of the historic stagecoach signs was made possible by nancial support from the Wells Fargo Foundation. Thom and Doug also completed an inventory of the location of the stagecoach signs that you can check out on our website, www.goletavalleybeautiful.org
Media Support - Thanks to our friends in the media for the articles and promotions in the Beacon, Valley Voice, NewsPress and Independent.
    6. Water Kings and Queens.
Refilling of Treegator irrigation bags should continue through October. If cool weather prevails, you can water every other week, depending on weather and soil conditions. The duties of a Water King and Queen are vital yet simple.  The primary responsibility is to insure that a newly planted tree receives deep watering every week during the summer dry months. If the tree you are responsible for is served by a piped irrigation system, then supplemental watering is not needed. Please call 252-1952 if you think your public tree needs a Treegator, if you are having problems filling the Treegator, or if your Treegator drains too quickly (a tear in the bag) or doesn't drain all its water within 10 hours (drainage holes clogged).

    4. GVB News Tidbits
Tree planting requests - UCSB Intern Kevin Brighton is also working for GVB this term conducting a review of the vacant sites in the City of Goleta where new street trees could be planted in the future. We had recent requests to plant trees along Phelps Road from Pacific Oaks to Canon Green, along Cathedral Oaks Road between Winchester Canyon and Paseo Del Pinion, on Amherst Dr., in Stow Park, and many other places in the Goleta Valley. Within City of Goleta areas, GVB is working with City staff and the Design Review Board to develop a process that will allow tree planting species to be decided and acted upon. Until we do, please let your tree planting desires made known to the appropriate government departments in addition to GVB. In the City of Goleta, send your requests to the Community Development Department, 6500 Hollister Ave Suite 120, Goleta CA 93117. In the unincorporated areas of the County, contact either the County Parks Department at 610 mission Canyon Rd., SB 93105-2911 or the Public Works Department at 123 East Anapamu St., SB 93101. You can mention that you would like to work with GVB in planting trees in public areas.

Membership Campaign - Welcome to the 50 new members in the first ten days of our membership campaign. Thanks for your support! The membership committee will also be contacting current members regarding their 2004 membership renewals. Please note that you can now use your Visa or MasterCard for membership donations. Think ahead for the holidays, Honor Trees make great gifts!.
Tree Planting Projects Delayed, Maintenance continues- Our grant-funded tree planting projects that we planned to begin in September have been pushed back to after Thanksgiving. California Department of Fire and Forestry officials have not yet completed the administrative processing of grants awarded last June. This has nothing to do with political issues, just the bureaucracy completing its tasks, which has been further complicated by the recent wildfires. We hope to begin weekly grant-funded tree plantings initiated after Thanksgiving. In the interim, we'll be concentrating on maintenance and non-grant projects.
GVB Board Member changes - Arborist Dan Condon is still in town, and he will be joining our Board of Directors until he leaves for Michigan sometime next year. The GVB Nominating Committee is continuing its search for two more Board of Directors candidates to serve the remainder of one year terms that began August 2003.
Free Tree offer for donor members and volunteers If you have a non-irrigated location with room for a Coast Live Oak or a Valley Oak, we have free oaks in 2, 5 and 15 gallon containers grown from native (Ellwood Canyon) acorns. The trees were provided courtesy of the Santa Barbara Farm Bureau. If your location is well-irrigated and you have the space for it, we also have several 15 gallon Coastal redwoods available free to current Goleta Valley Beautiful donor members or volunteers who have offered their services in the past year. We also have a limited supply of Eastern redbud trees in 2 gallon containers, and 1 15 gallon Deodar Cedar. Call 252-1952.

Public Tree planting and maintenance during October - - On Oct 10 Dave Nickels and 5 Tri-Counties Boot Camp boys planted 2 Chinese Pistache at 433 Kings Way, and 1 Goldenrain Tree in honor of Victor Lamas in front of A-OK Mowers on Pine Street in Old Town Goleta for a total of 20 service hours.

On October 17, Dave Nickels and 8 Tri-County Boot Camp Boys contributed 32 service hours to repot 50 young oak trees into larger containers (with donated soil from Doug Winter). We also spent 6 hours watering the Brisbane Box trees along Cathedral Oaks and Los Carneros Roads on October 26.
Calle Real Clean-up - Thanks to the City of Goleta for ordering the clean-up of the parkway on the south side of Calle Real between Calaveras Ave. and Glen Annie/Storke Road. Now for some mulch!
Lemon Festival - Many thanks to all the GVB volunteers at our booth at the Lemon Festival. President Sam S. Alfano organized our popcorn and churro sales with the help of Doug Winter, Merlyn Cummings, Mignon Bradley, Jessica and Elisabeth Neri, Sandy Foehl, Sarah Kitson, Josh and Serena Berry, Carolyn Cogan, Phoebe Mansur, Andrew Hemming, Kaylyn Scott, Harry Hagen, Paul Grayson, Judy Duell and family, Karen Beerman, and a few others who names we missed. Special thanks to Patty Forgie at the University Religious Center for the donation of 7 folding tables for our ongoing use, and to Tallant and Nancy Smith for the lemons we gave away during the lemon festival.
We're looking to increase our sales next year. How can we 'lemonize' our products? What do you think of lemon-flavored popcorn balls? How about a lemon cream filled churro or a churro with lemon frosting? We would appreciate your ideas.
GVB Website fixed. The problems with our domain name have been fixed for now. Our website, www.goletavalleybeautiful.org, is back in action. We are still looking for comments on expanding and improving the Self Guided Tour of Goleta Valley Trees. The Tour Map and descriptions, designed to be viewed or downloaded from our website, is now available at www.goletavalleybeautiful.org. Please check it out and let us know how we can improve it.
Stagecoach Sign Map and Tour - If you see any of the historical Wells Fargo stage coach signs requiring maintenance, please leave a message with Doug Winter at 967-5832 between downtown Santa Barbara and Mattei's Tavern in Santa Ynez. GVB Board members Thom Myall and Doug Winter periodically do maintenance checks of the signs between downtown Santa Barbara and Mattei's Tavern in Santa Ynez. Thom and Doug also completed an inventory of the location of the stagecoach signs that you can check out on our website, www.goletavalleybeautiful.org.
Media Support - Thanks to our friends in the media for the articles and promotions in the Beacon, Valley Voice, NewsPress and Independent. Did you notice the front page article in the News-Press about lemon crates made by our own GVB Board member Merlyn Cummings? Although many asked if they could buy them, they are given away free with GVB Benefactor membership. However, a question to our membership-should we Merlyn's Lemon Crates as a fundraiser for GVB, and if so, for how much?
    6. Water Kings and Queens.
We usually get enough rain to allow us to discontinue the use of Treegators in November, but refilling of Treegator irrigation bags should continue until we get sustained rains of one inch or more. If the rains materialize, GVB volunteers will be removing, inspecting and storing the Treegators that we refill with a water trailer on November 21. For individuals who are refilling their Treegators with their garden hoses, please fill your Treegator as needed in November. On November 21, please remove the Treegator and store it in a safe place until next spring, or leave it one and we'll have GVB volunteers come around to pick it up. If you would like assistance in the removal, inspection or storage of the Treegator, please contact 252-1952 In order to help quantify the amount of effort that you're making, would you please keep track of the number of hours that you (and any other volunteers working with you) have spent watering this past summer, and send a short e-mail message to kennethknight@cox.net with this information, or leave a message at 252-1952. The information will be helpful in soliciting community and foundation support for our programs.

    Board of Directors Meeting
    November 7, 2003

Board Members Present: Sam Alfano, Kathy Curtis, Doug Winter, Merlyn Cummings, Laura Funkhouser, Al Turnbull, Alan Cavaletto, Thom Myall, Cherie Welsh and Ken Knight.

1.Call to order and Introduction of Guests - Sam
1.1. Sam called the meeting to order at 7:30 am at the Pacifica Suites.
1.2.Sam introduced guests: Ellen Hamilton, Phebe Mansur, Janet Gripp, Bonnie Freeman and Dan Condon. Phebe and Dan have requested to join the Board. The Executive Board will consider their application and approval is scheduled for the December Board meeting.
    2. Presidents Report - Sam
2.1. Proceeds from Lemon Festival fell about $900 below budgeted expectation.  Factors that contributed to the short fall were: the need to rent the chorro machine, the need to purchase a booth enclosure to meet Board of Health requirements and stiff competition from other food vendors.  Ken feels that GVB should develop a lemon oriented food product as well. Further discussion was deferred to the upcoming Executive Board meeting.
2.2. Merlyn- Lemon Crates were very popular at the festival. Ken suggested that GVB could give a crate to a commercial business giving a donation to GVB. Thom suggested putting the GVB logo on the crate as well. Sam mentioned that there are Board Members who are willing to assist Merlyn in the fabrication of the crates. ; Further discussion was deferred to the upcoming Executive Board meeting.
2.3. The Executive Board Meeting was scheduled for Friday, November 14th from 12:30 to 1:30 at the Crocodile Bar and Restaurant within the Lemon Tree Inn on State Street.
    3. Secretary Report - Doug
3.1.The final version of the September minutes was not sent out by email so the Board was unable to approve them. Doug will send out the September minutes and they can be approved in the December meeting.
3.2. Ken announced that Board Members who desire to be profiled in the News-Press Out and About column should furnish Doug with a short write up of about 4 sentences and a photograph. Ken offered to take the photo, however Kathy said that she still had the photos which she had taken earlier.
    4. Treasury Report - Ken
4.1. Less than expected revenues from the Lemon Festival combined with greater than anticipated expenses has resulted in a shortfall of between $1,500 and $2,500 relative to the budget Membership receipts are up, however some projects have been delayed resulting in delayed cash flow. Action to relieve the shortfall will be discussed at the Executive Board Meeting.  An updated report will be presented next month.
    5. Membership - Kathy, Laura & Tami
5.1. Phase 1 mailings to 93117 and 50% of 93111 have resulted in 80 new members giving an average donation of $45, which has brought about $3600.
5.2. Ken proposed that the phase 2 mailing to the remaining 50% of 93111 and the 93110 zip codes be started immediately rather than in April as previously planned. The argument for this is that people will appreciate their dues covering a full year rather than from April on. The Board concurred. Laura suggested rewriting the letter to better target the 93110 people.
5.3. Phone contacts are currently being made to the current membership, which has not yet renewed their membership. Ken emphasized that it is critical that these calls be completed prior to Thanksgiving, as holiday pressures will impede the success of the campaign afterwards.
    6. Business Committee - Ken
6.1. A commercial business needs to be identified for the November award New GVB member Janet Gripp offered to work with Ken to visit a site and develop and article.
6.2.Ken indicated that a new committee chairman and co-chair are needed.

8.3.The Education Committee will meet on November 13th, from 7:00 to 7:30 am at the Pacifica Suites.
    9.Government -Doug
9.1. Doug reported that he and Ken attended a Design Review Board (DRB) meeting on November 4th. Ken addressed the DRB where he requested a meeting with the Street Tree Subcommittee to the discuss the following issues:

11.8. Al Turnbull reported that a plan is needed for tree planting in the Friendship Manor grove. Sam indicated that the effort should be put on hold pending the finalization of a sale to UCSB.
    12. Executive Director's Report - Ken
12.1. GVB storage at The Camino Real Market Place has been moved to a trailer located behind Home Depot.  After 3 months GVB will have to pay $80 per month for trailer rent to Marborg. This expense is not in the budget so an alternative is needed.

If you go to the midway point of Hollister Avenue, the longest continuous street in Goleta, you will find yourself in front of a Victorian style MTD Bus Stop, looking past a wooded park that is the entrance to the Goleta Valley community Center. The picturesque gazebo and winding brick path on the front lawn tell you that you have come to the 'town center', the 'Heart of Goleta.'
The seven-acre facility was built as a school in 1927, and remained open for nearly 50 years before new earthquake standards for schools forced its closure. In 1977, the Coastal Conservancy provided a sizable grant to purchase the school from the Goleta Union School District. Through the efforts of Supervisor Bill Wallace and Assemblyman Jack O'Connell, the 25,000 square foot building was saved from being The Center now serves over 350,000 guests annually. It is home to the Central Coast Headquarters of the Community Action Commission, the Goleta Senior Center, food programs, dance classes, Day Care Centers, Legal Aid, Karate, Jazzercise, business seminars and training sessions, and several churches. The raised gazebo, with its international flag display, provides a popular meeting found for political announcements and media gatherings.
The newly renovated property includes lighted parking for 190 cars, a tennis court, outdoor basketball courts, soccer field, certified kitchen facilities, an auditorium, dining hall, meeting rooms, and a beautiful courtyard patio.
Annual events for the community are highlighted by the Tree Lighting Ceremony held on the first Friday of December each year, and a Veteran's Day Ceremony and Barbecue November 11th.
Whether it was the children of the 1920's or the throngs of people who frequent the Center in to the year 2004, the Goleta Valley Community Center has long held the 'pulse' of the Goleta Valley. It's a healthy heartbeat!
    4. GVB News Tidbits
Intern/Community service opportunities UCSB Intern Kevin Brighton is finishing work for GVB this term conducting a review of the vacant sites in the City of Goleta where new street trees could be planted in the future. We will need more 30-40 hour per term interns to complete the project beginning in January.  We also need help with preparing for our 30th anniversary celebration in May by preparing displays of past GVB award winners. Photographers needed! We are also looking for a 30 hour project to clean and repair several hundred used Treegators during the rainy winter months. Finally, we need a product tester to help us revise our products for the Goleta Lemon Festival - we need someone handy in the kitchen to test recipes. Call 252-1952 for information.
Tree Planting Requests -Within City of Goleta areas, GVB is working with City staff and the Design Review Board to develop a process that will allow tree planting species to be decided and acted upon. We'll have a list of approved City and County trees on our website next month. Please note that you can now use your Visa or MasterCard for membership donations. Please consider giving an Honor Tree as a holiday gift that will be long remembered.
Tree Planting Projects Delayed, Maintenance continues- Once again, we have been delayed in initiating our grant-funded tree planting projects that we planned to begin in September and are now scheduled the beginning of the year. California Department of Fire and Forestry officials have not yet completed the administrative processing of grants awarded last June. We'll be following up with a tree planting project in January. GVB Website. Our website, www.goletavalleybeautiful.org, is getting even better. Thom Myall has loaded several forms onto the site including honor tree applications, GVB Award Nomination Forms, and Membership Application forms. Please check it out and let us know how we can improve it.
Media Support - Thanks to our friends in the media for the articles and promotions in the Beacon, Valley Voice, NewsPress and Independent.
    7. Water Kings and Queens.
GVB volunteers removed and stored Treegators during November. If we missed your Treegator, please let us know and we'll have GVB volunteers come around to pick it up. There are some trees that have been watered for two years and are now approaching the end of the use of Treegators. These trees should be acclimated by now, and although they could use an occasional deep watering with a garden hose, the Treegator would not be necessary on an ongoing basis. Thank you for your diligence.
In order to help quantify the amount of effort that you're making, would you please keep track of the number of hours that you (and any other volunteers working with you) have spent watering this past summer, and send a short e-mail message to kennethknight@cox.net with this information, or leave a message at 252-1952. The information will be helpful in soliciting community and foundation support for our programs.
