6.2nd Annual Goleta Valley Heritage Tree and Nursery Tour- Review

Our thanks to everyone who made the 2nd annual tree tour on June 29 such a great time, and a successful fundraiser. Goleta Valley Beautiful raised approximately $1,400 dollars to help us continue the maintenance and care of the Goleta Valley urban forest. For the eight people who paid for reserved seats but couldn't make the trip, we thank you for your generous donations. We hope to have a self guided tour out later this year, and we have photos and background information from the tour that we can share upon request.
We owe a lot to our primary sponsor, Eric Onnen of Santa Barbara Airbus. We wish our driver Wes well in his retirement after being so courteous in driving us around on his last working day. All of our tour guides made this trip unique in comparison to last year's tour. Randy Baldwin not only gave us a great behind the scenes tour, but he also gave us Coast Live Oaks for each of us to plant. Misty Gonzales provided extensive water conservation information, and Kevin Barthel and Valerie Smith helped us understand the wonders of Ellwood Point and Stow Grove. Once again we are indebted to Bill Ehrlich for allowing us access to the treasures of Bishop Ranch.
And the whole tour was tied together by word and song with Jerry Sortommee and Dan Condon. We'll miss you Dan, but please return soon. And thanks to Thom Myall for coordinating the whole tour. We hope to do it again next year.

7. Water Kings and Queens.

Water Kings and Queens should have seen the reappearance of Treegators (Portable Tree Irrigator) around the trees for which they are responsible. A Treegator is a tough green plastic bag that wraps around the trunk of newly planted trees. GVB volunteers distributed over 300 Treegators this past month. Please note that areas with gopher/ground squirrel activity within 25 feet of the tree should NOT use Treegators. Our experience has been that the water from the Treegators acts as an attraction to the gophers, resulting in the destruction of the tree and the Treegator. We recommend weeding and mulching in these areas, and survival watering as a last resort.

Water Kings and Queens is the term we have given to our volunteers who have had trees planted adjacent to their property within the past two years. Generally, GVB doesn't plant a tree unless there is someone to take care of it during its first two year establishment period. The duties of a Water King and Queen are simple. The primary responsibility is to insure that a newly planted tree receives deep watering every week during the summer dry months. If the tree you are responsible for is served by a piped irrigation system, then supplemental watering is not needed. For all other trees, if the tree is big enough, GVB will provide a Treegator for summertime watering. When properly placed around a tree and filled with a garden hose, a Treegator will slowly deliver 20 gallons of water to the rootball with no runoff. If the tree is too small to use a Treegator, a berm will be necessary. Please call 252-1952 if you think your public tree needs a Treegator, if you are having problems filling the Treegator, or if your Treegator drains too quickly (a tear in the bag) or doesn't drain all its water within 10 hours (drainage holes clogged).

On August 8 Tom Smith and 10 TCBC planted 2 deodars and 5 Brisbane Box at Kellogg School. August 22 had Larry Chavez and 9 TCBC mulch and irrigate 20 trees at Brandon and water, mulch and cull the trees at Camino Real Marketplace, and on August 29 Larry Chavez and 10 boys spread mulch along Cathedral Oaks Road and repot 6 Eastern Redbud trees.

Goleta Valley Boys and Girls Club Under the direction of Carolina Hoover, Goleta Valley Boys and Girls Club volunteers provided 223 volunteer hours of service in July and August for the following activities--9 volunteers mulched 40 trees at El Rancho School on July 1, 12 volunteers mulched 20 trees and 2 planting areas at Kellogg School on July 8, 17 volunteers trimmed 5 trees on the Goleta Valley Junior High campus on July 15 along with rescuing one large Coastal Redwood tree from death by ivy, 17 volunteers planted one tree at Goleta Valley Junior High and another on Pembroke Avenue on July 15, and on August 19 there were 9 volunteers spreading mulch along 30 trees at La Patera School.  IN addition to ongoing snacks and drinks provided to the volunteers, the boys and girls were treated to a pizza party at Girsh Park on August 19, and GVB provided a check for $150 to Goleta Valley Boys and Girls Club from a Wells Fargo Foundation grant to help offset their costs for transportation and supervision.

Cathedral Oaks Watering - In our continuing commitment to maintaining the trees along Cathedral Oaks and Los Carneros Roads, we watered 120 trees on July 6, July 27 and August 17 for a total of 24 service hours.

Stow House on the 4th of July - GVB Board members Sam Alfano, Thom Myall, Doug Winters and Merlyn Cummings served up churros during the 4th of July festivities.  We briefly tried selling a cheaper variety of churro but Doug promptly labeled it a WMD and we went back to selling the original tastier churro.

Self Guided Tour of Goleta Valley Trees -  Thanks to the Goleta City Council for a Community Project Grant of $750 to prepare a Self Guided Tour of Goleta Valley Trees.  This tour is an extension of our annual Heritage Tree Tour.  The Tour Map, designed to be downloaded from our website, is now in the 'beta' testing stage and it will be released in the next few weeks.  Watch for it and let us know what should be changed or added to for the next edition.

Venoco, Inc. Grant - One of the hardest fundraising efforts is to secure general operating funds to support all the good things we do.  Venoco, Inc helps us leverage our tree planting and maintenance funds by providing us with a $4,000 grant to support the costs of tree planting and maintenance that grants don't cover.  Our insurance costs for the coming year, for example, will cost close to $9,000.  President Sam Alfano expressed his thanks in a letter to the editor.

Media Support -  Thanks to our friends in the media for the articles and promotions in the Beacon, Valley Voice, NewsPress and Independent.

    6. Water Kings and Queens.

The duties of a Water King and Queen are vital yet simple.  The primary responsibility is to insure that a newly planted tree receives deep watering every week during the summer dry months.  If the tree you are responsible for is served by a piped irrigation system, then supplemental watering is not needed.  Please call 252-1952 if you think your public tree needs a Treegator, if you are having problems filling the Treegator, or if your Treegator drains too quickly (a tear in the bag) or doesn't drain all its water within 10 hours (drainage holes clogged).
