3. GVB News Tidbits
Feb 4 Basic Young Tree Care 2 Workshop - For those of you novices who want to know more about the basics of tree planting and maintenance, we again have enlisted the talents of expert arborists and urban foresters to explain the basics in just one Saturday morning. We have included all new material from last year's workshop, which attracted over 80 participants. The workshop is sponsored by the Central Coast Urban Forest Council and all of the South Coast 'Beautiful' organizations. Lunch is included and there is no charge, but you must register in advance. See the registration flier at the end of this newsletter. This workshop and the Project Learning Tree workshop require separate registration.
Feb 4 Project Learning Tree Workshop - In one Saturday afternoon, teachers and environmental educators will learn curriculum-approved methods for incorporating tree and urban forest themed environmental activities into your lesson plans. Led by trainers from the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden and the Channel Islands National Park, participants will be provided extensive lesson plans and activities to try out and take with you. Lunch is included and there is no charge, but you must register in advance. See the registration flier at the end of this newsletter. This workshop and the Basic Young Tree Care 2 Workshop require separate registration.
Goleta Valley Beautiful Insert in January 12 Santa Barbara Independent - Thanks to a Media grant from the Hutton Foundation, the Santa Barbara Independent will be insert a four page 'ad' about Goleta Valley Beautiful in the Thursday January 12 edition of the Independent. And thanks to additional contributions by GVB Board members Al Turnbull and David Fainer, it will be in color! We won't get a separate printing of the insert, so if you get one of the 40,000 copies of the insert, please hang on to it. It includes registration for many of our activities planned this year.
Santa Barbara Foundation Awards GVB $10,000 for a part time Volunteer Coordinator/Trainer - The Santa Barbara Foundation awarded GVB $10,000 to initiate a part time Volunteer Coordinator and Trainer in 2006. We are looking for someone, possibly two people, with an interest in working with our volunteers, and who has an interest and knowledge about teaching others about trees and urban forestry.
UCSB Associated Students Shoreline Preservation Fund awards GVB $500 for 2 intern positions - The UCSB student-funded organization awarded GVB two $250 scholarships for student interns during the fall and winter quarters. We are looking for someone to continue part time research work from January to April on the project to use General Plans as a means of defining trees as capital assets. Call 683-0121 for more information.
California ReLeaf Awards GVB $1000 for 'Heritage Trees-The Next Generation' Program with Carpinteria Beautiful - California ReLeaf, a network of organizations like GVB throughout the state, has awarded GVB $1000 to work with Carpinteria Beautiful to create copies of Heritage Trees for planting in public areas. Tentative plans call for developing copies from the original trees, including Goleta's Witness Sycamore Tree at the Sizzler Restaurant, and the Sexton Flame Tree at Pacifica Suites. In Carpinteria, we will be working with the Wardholme Torrey Pine and the Portola Sycamore. Volunteers needed to help, call 683-0121.
2006 Neighborhood Beautification Sites - In the planning stages are beautification projects for the City of Goleta property near Tecolotito Creek next to Del Norte and Glen Annie Roads as part of October 21, 2006 Make a Difference Day. Also planned for beautification is a portion of the Kellogg North Open Space along Queen Ann Road and Kellogg on the September 16,2006 Day of Caring. These projects are still in the early planning stages. Community support and resources are essential, so your input is appreciated.
Beautify Dos Pueblos High School - The Planning Committee will be meeting on January 9 at 7 in the school library to develop plans for maintenance days and projects with financial incentives for student participation.
So long old friends - Jim Farr has announced he will be leaving his position as Editor of the Valley Voice. We have appreciated his continuing support of all things Goleta and we will miss his leadership. Keith Whigham, Devereux's Counselor who worked so well with the developmentally disabled clients at the Greenhouse and Growing Grounds, completed his last day at the Greenhouse. He'll be returning to school but we hope he can come back some day to help out again.
March 4 California Arbor Day celebration at Girsh Park - Mark your calendars to attend a tree planting at Girsh Park, followed by a Tri-Tip barbeque sponsored by the Suburban Kiwanis. More details in next month's newsletter.
Newsletter format - Many of our regular readers were having problems logging onto our website to read the newsletter. While you can still get the newsletter (and back issues) via our website, we'll return to sending it by e-mail.

- GVB listed twice in new phonebooks - After 32 years of not being in the phonebook at all, Goleta Valley Beautiful is now in the phone twice, once under our office at 5638 Hollister Room 200D, and second under the Goleta Valley Chamber of Commerce, who will forward calls to us. Now you have multiple ways to reach us! Our cell phone 252-1952, still remains unlisted since it is not ties to a residential location.
Record breaking tree planting month - The 131 trees we planted in January broke our previous monthly planting record of 120 trees set back in February 2001, when we planted 120 trees. We had help from Bill Nolan and the California Conservation Corps to plant trees in the medians around the City of Goleta. In addition to time constraints, the CCC is more experienced at planting under hazardous situations in the middle of the road than our normal crew of volunteers
Rosemary 'Zea' Bauer joins GVB Board of Directors - Rosemary Bauer, also known as Zea to her friends, joins the GVB Board of Directors this month. Zea works with the Los Padres Council of the Boy Scouts of America and she will be working to strengthen our links with youth groups in the area. Welcome aboard! 5. Water Kings and Queens. - Please water young trees planted within the last two years! The anticipated winter rains were very light in January and indications are that early February will be dry too, which makes supplemental watering necessary. One deep watering (about 20 gallons-no runoff) every 2 weeks should be adequate.

Do I need a Treegator (Portable Tree Irrigator) and what do I do with it?
If your tree does not get regular water through an irrigation system, our volunteers have installed Treegators (portable tree irrigators) on most of the trees we have planted this past year and last. Usually in June there are many overcast days, so Treegators only need to be filled once with 20 gallons of water via a garden hose every two weeks. But for those of you who may find a green treegator bag around your tree and not know what to do, or if your hose isn't long enough, please leave a message at 683-0121 and we'll get back to you with instructions, or visit http://www.treegator.com/ on the web.
Order your Honor Tree for Father's Day/Birthdays/Graduations/Remembrances

Board of Directors Meeting
May 5, 2006
Board Members Present: Lori Roper, Bonnie Freeman, Merlyn Cummings, Laura Funkhouser, Itai Shelem, Tami Mason, Dave Fainer, Phebe Mansur, Scott Bull, Doug Winter and Ken Knight. Guests were: Marc Bradley.
1. Call to order/introduction of guests – Laura
1.1. Laura called the meeting to order at 7:00 am at the Pacifica Suites.
1.2. Laura introduced Marc Bradley as an honored guest.
Consent Agenda – Generally no discussion unless requested Laura moved and Merlyn seconded that the items of the agenda, listed below, be approved. The Board approved the consent agenda.
2. Approval of Last Month’s Board Meeting Minutes
2.1. The March minutes were approved as written by the Board.
3. Approval of Last Month’s Executive Committee Meeting Minutes
3.1. The March minutes were approved as written by the Board.
4. Approval of Year To Date (YTD) Budget Status Report –Ken
4.1. Doug commented that we are now almost 13K in the red as we approach the end of our fiscal year. Earnings from the Tree Tour, Banquet and Silent Auction have not yet been realized. There is a very strong likelihood that GVB will end the fiscal year in the red. What is the impact of this eventuality? Ken addressed this question with the following comments:
4.1.1. Ken said that GVB has a line of credit which can be utilized to cover accounts payable obligations.
4.1.2. Year end compilations may show a negative balance which can have negative impacts on future efforts to raise funds.
4.1.3. GVB may start the next fiscal year with a negative figure that would need to be resolved during the year thru fundraising.
4.2. Laura pointed out that we need to improve performance of account 4010 (Contributions-Individual/Business) as well as account 4210 (Corporate & Other Business Grants). Laura mentioned that she expects that there will be a number of grant applications submitted in the June timeframe.
4.3. Dave pointed out that ending the fiscal year in the red can have serious negative consequences when seeking grants. We can be disqualified from consideration.
4.4. Ken said that the real impact of the budget, at year end, is about $8K to $10K short.
4.5. Doug said that when we develop the unrestricted portion of next year’s budget, we must identify some strong programs for earning unrestricted income.
4.6. Laura suggested that the Board members can invite friends and neighbors to the Banquet and consider covering their admission. She also suggested considering giving an Honor Tree.
4.7. Ken mentioned that he could use help in letter writing to potential sources of unrestricted income.
4.8. Bonnie mentioned that she has had the feeling that the GVB is “over reaching”. We need to scale back and pick high profile projects. Ken replied that the problem is with our fixed costs. The cost of the office and phone at the Nonprofit Support Center is insignificant.
5. This month’s GVB award – Bonnie
5.1. No discussion as selection was released to the Board previously.
6. Approval of Executive Committee’s recommendation for Dave Sherin as new Board Member – Laura
6.1. Laura moved and Bonnie seconded that Dave Sherin be approved for Board membership. The vote was unanimous. Dave Sherin is now a member of the Board.
Action Agenda
7. 2006 Membership Campaign Status Report – Lori
7.1. Lori said that GVB currently has 289 members.
7.2. Lori stressed that donation of goods/services to the Silent Auction does not qualify the donor for GVB membership without paying the annual dues. Laura pointed out that the “thank you” letters to the donors only suggests to them that they can become GVB members but does not offer membership free of dues. Ken said that in the past GVB membership was obtained thru: cash donations, donations of some kind of property or volunteering your participation in GVB projects. This was done in the name of community support. Marc replied that they should be considered supporters rather than members. Dave mentioned that membership implies that dues were paid. Lori stated that she felt strongly that membership implied payment of dues and all others are volunteers or donors. She requested that this matter be taken up on the agenda of a future meeting.
7.3. Lori reported that Ken’s email appeal to non-renewing members did result in some success. Ken thinks that about 5 or so people renewed as a result of the email.
8. Volunteer Coordinator Report – Scott
8.1. GVB is in the process of compiling our volunteer statistics. The latest information shows over 700 active volunteers.
8.2. GVB needs to report on volunteer progress to The Santa Barbara Foundation in July in support of their grant to GVB. Scott emphasized that it is important that the Board members continue to provide him with their volunteer hours for his report.
8.3. Ken said that the State puts a value of $18.04 on each volunteer hour.
8.4. Scott distributed examples of his spreadsheets and charts showing monthly volunteer activity.
9. Monthly Awards Committee Report, Proposed Winners for Next Month –Bonnie, Phebe.
9.1. Phebe reported that the non-residential award recipient for June is Saint Michaels Episcopal Church in Isla Vista.
10. Annual Awards Schedule – Laura
10.1. Ken asked for a show of hands as to who is planning to attend the banquet. David Fainer said that he is uncertain as to whether he will be able to attend.
10.2. Ken circulated the award certificate, which Kathy Curtis is producing, to the Board.
10.3. One minute is allowed for introduction of the award recipient and one minute for their acceptance comments. In addition, each award recipient will receive one of Merlyn’s miniature lemon crates.
11. Silent Auction Status Report – Lori
11.1. Lori reported that we now have about 66 donors and over 80 items with a combined estimated value of about $6,300. Last year our final value figure was $7,700.
11.2. GVB will donate 2 Heritage Tree Tour tickets worth $45 each.
11.3. Lori thanked Phebe for a substantial discount for the printing of the bid forms which Lori is donating to GVB for the Silent Auction.
12. Education Committee/Albertsons/Arbor Day Presentations/Venturing– Ken for Al/Zea.
12.1. Ken reported that he has given five Arbor Day presentations to the schools.
12.2. Zea has a process for implementing Venturing at San Marcos HS which will be delivered to the Board at a later date.
13. Endowment Campaign – Dave
13.1. Dave reported that he and Laura plan to restart the campaign in June.
13.2. Dave will invite the potential members of the Endowment Committee to attend the Annual Banquet.
14. Fifth Annual GV Heritage Tree Tour – Ken for Al
14.1. The event is scheduled for June 25 in the afternoon. The tour will have new locations such as Dos Pueblos Ranch. Dan Condon may lead the tour.
14.2. The UCSB Retiree Organization will be contacted about advertising the tree tour in their newsletter.
15. Status Report of Fundraising/Grants – Laura
15.1. Ken said that we have received a $250 Community Grant award from the City of Goleta.
15.2. Ken is identifying private property where we may be able to plant honor trees with plaques. We have a backlog of about 10 honor trees that have not been planted due to the City policy on plaques. Laura has twice appealed to the City Manager to rescind this policy.
15.3. Cal ReLeaf’s money has been cut for next year. They will not have funds to award us a capacity grant. Ken has requested a $7,500 tree planting grant for the planting of about 100 trees at San Marcos HS. This grant has the potential to offer a project to the Venturing group to be formed at the HS.
15.4. Ken will contact Home Depot for a $20,000 grant to continue operations at the Devereaux green house.
16. Advisory Council and Baxter Report Follow-up – Laura.
16.1. Laura reported that last night the Executive Committee met to prioritize the 33 recommendations set forth in Jim Baxter’s report. Doug distributed a summary report of the priority recommendations to the Board.
16.2. Laura instructed the Board to review the recommendations and give her feedback prior to the next Board meeting. The Board will vote on the priority recommendations at the June Board meeting.
17. Interactive Website Proposal – Ken
17.1. Ken asked the Board to think about the concept of an interactive website which would enhance our fundraising efforts.
17.2. Itai reported that he is extremely unimpressed with the product offered by the company that would implement the website for us. Itai feels that our current website is 10 times better than what he has seen of their product. Itai offered an alternative website design called “Get Active”. This matter will be further discussed at the June Board meeting.
18. Presentations At Government & Public Meetings - Ken
18.1. Lori will address the City Council on May 10th at 1:30 pm
18.2. Laura will address the City Council on May 17th.
18.3. Fermina will address the City Council on May 24th.
19. Wells Fargo Sign Maintenance Update – Doug
19.1. Doug surveyed the sign system and found signs numbers 23 & 28 missing in action. On April 25th Doug phoned in a request for new signs with Dave Benton of Benton Signs. Dave reported, that due to his backlog we should expect about an 8 week turnaround on the signs.
19.2. Ken mentioned that it was decided to not use any of the funds for sign maintenance for administrative purposes. A request for $1,000 has been sent to Wells Fargo. If granted, these funds will be unrestricted.
19.3. Ken asked Doug to have more brochures produced.
20. Items for Future Agendas – Laura
20.1. Doug and Lori will both be out of the country during the next Board meeting and therefore will not be in attendance.
20.2. Ken reported that he will not be able to attend the July Board meeting.
