December 2007 GVB Award
The December award goes to Jeff and Nancy Watson of 284 Vereda Leyenda in the Rancho Embarcadero area of Goleta. When AIA Architect Murray Duncan topped off their remodel with a beautiful portico, the Watsons’ stage was set to add a landscape. A natural design from Landscape Architect Robert Andrew Fowler allowed the Watsons’ to take on the contracting. Jeff did much of the stonework and plant installation, all the while checking with Nancy. Water conservation was a main concern so they limited a grassy area and installed wide borders of flowering white, yellow and blue plants. Birch trees, a Jacaranda and flowering Magnolia dot the garden. A path of ‘Aztec Gold’ stone, and a wall of Santa Barbara sandstone presents a welcoming setting against the nearby hills.

GVB Holiday gift to Goleta Valley -140 trees at 101/Los Carneros Interchange Off ramp
(3 tree photos go here)
"Wow, look at all those trees" was a comment overheard from some passersby on the Los Carneros overpass as GVB was finishing planting 140 trees along the southbound Los Carneros Interchange off ramp. Although the area is CalTrans right-of-way, GVB initiated the project with the help of a $33,000 Environmental Enhancement and Mitigation Grant from the State Resources Agency. GVB oversaw implementation of the project, which is not affiliated with any other Caltrans or City 101 landscaping projects.
A crew from the California Conservation Corps installed the trees, with assistance from GVB contractor/volunteers Mark Broomfield and Dan Condon (he's back!). The 12 different species of trees used are all native or suited to our Mediterranean climate and grown at the Devereux nursery. GVB will monitor and maintain the trees over the next several years as they become established.
Thanks to Joey and the Santa Barbara Transfer Station crew for multiple deliveries of mulch to the site, Kitson Landscape Management for use of their 1000 gallon water tanker, Granite Construction Co.for the use of their Traffic signs, Camino Real Marketplace for the use of their traffic cones, and David Stone for donation of his archeological services.
GVB completes December plantings with a total 162 trees
(2 photos go here)
Thanks to the 51 volunteers who contributed 151 service hours to plant 15 trees at San Marcos High School on 12/1/07. Volunteer groups represented include Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Chi Omega, UCSB's Black Student Union and other UCSB and Goleta Valley Beautiful volunteers. The trees planted include Island Oaks and Coast Live Oaks grown at the Goleta Valley Beautiful Devereux nursery from locally collected seeds.
Funding was provided by a Green Trees for the Golden State grant from the California Department of Fire and Forestry, the Santa Barbara Foundation and Goleta Valley Beautiful Donor Members.

GVB thanks the 22 volunteers who provided 72 service hours on Saturday, December 8th at Dos Pueblos High School. This was a maintenance day where we weeded, mulched, extended irrigation lines, put weed block cloth on high maintenance areas and pruned trees. Since UCSB is having its finals, all volunteers this time were Dos Pueblos students, families and staff.
Thanks to Beautify Dos Pueblos and Goleta Valley Beautiful donors for equipment, supervision and snacks and drinks for the volunteers, and to Kitson Landscape Management for delivering the mulch.

GVB welcomes
sailors to San Marcos High tree planting efforts
USS Ronald Reagan sailors on shore leave joined with community volunteers to
help plant native trees at San Marcos High on January 12th. While four
sailors worked on a painting project, another 11 sailors joined 17 San Marcos
student, family and volunteers from UCSB's Chi Delta Theta sorority in planting
ten Coast Live Oak trees and installing new bleachers by the San Marcos
softball fields. The 28 volunteers contributed 84 service hours to this
effort.
The tree planting is part of an ongoing effort by Goleta Valley Beautiful to
plant large shade trees on school campuses for the environmental and aesthetic
benefits. In the past 2 years, Goleta Valley Beautiful has planted 130
trees on the San Marcos campus. The tree plantings are sponsored by
Goleta Valley Beautiful donor members, with the support of funding
from California Department of Fire and Forestry Green Trees for the Golden
State, Santa Barbara Foundation, UCSB Coastal Fund, Devereux of Santa
Barbara, and the Santa Barbara School district.
EAB
completes Earth Day Carbon offsets with 20 more trees
On Friday afternoon, January 11th, 35 EAB volunteers planted 20 native Coast
Live Oak trees in the Camino Corto Open Space. This planting, along with
15 Ironwood trees planted in the Estero Open Space last April 7th, offset the
carbon emissions generated by UCSB's 2007 Earth Day activities.
EAB sponsored the tree plantings in conjunction with Goleta Valley Beautiful as
a community effort to increase awareness of how the simple act of planting
trees can help combat global warming. The trees were grown from seed
collected in the Tecolotito Creek watershed and raised at Goleta Valley
Beautiful's Devereux Nursery with support from the UCSB Coastal Fund.
Community volunteers joined EAB in contributing 91 service hours during
Friday's planting. EAB will work with Goleta Valley Beautiful and Isla
Vista Recreation and Parks District staff to insure the trees are well
established during the next several years.
Brandon volunteers plant
37 trees in one morning
Thanks to the 37 volunteers who contributed 123 service hours to plant 37 trees
on the Brandon Elementary School campus. The weather was clear on
Saturday morning January 26th as Brandon School children, parents, PTA members
and Principal Lynette Meyer, UCSB Black Pioneer Renaissance Organization,
Hermanos Unidos, and Tri Delta planted 17 different species of trees around the
campus. Species planted included Big Leaf maple, Torrey Pine, Persimmon, Bottle,
Black Cottonwood, Coast Live Oak, Ironwood, Valley Oak, Ginkgo, Catalina
Cherry, Canary Island Pine, Southern Oak, Brisbane Box, Sycamore, Chinese
Pistache, Chinese Flame, and Redbud.
This event was sponsored by grants from the California Department of Forestry
and Fire Protection, Santa Barbara Foundation, the UCSB Coastal Fund, and by
GVB donor members. Trees were provided at deep discount through West
Covina Nursery, and through the GVB Greenhouse Program in cooperation with
Devereux of Santa Barbara.

Training
Programs attract volunteer pruners, teachers
GVB provided a day-long training to UCSB's TEAWET participants regarding the
impact of urban forestry on storm water management in the Tecelotito Creek
watershed. GVB partner, Growing Solutions Dave Mazurklewitz, spoke
about their efforts to restore the creek flowing through the airport.
Goleta Valley Beautiful initiated the first in a series of free tree pruning
clinics last week in Isla Vista. Participants learned proper tree pruning
techniques in the classroom from experienced instructors Dan condon, Dougal House
Jr. and George Jimenez. This was followed by a Saturday afternoon field
clinic at Camino Corto Open Space where participants practiced their technique
under professional supervision.
"The Citizen Pruner program is designed to train community volunteers in caring
for young trees in public places" said Ken Knight, Goleta Valley Beautiful
Executive Director and Certified Arborist/Urban Forester. "Proper
pruning techniques help public trees grow stronger and with less ongoing
maintenance."
Pruning clinics will be held for the next several months funded by a grant from
California ReLeaf, a statewide network of nonprofit agencies devoted to the
care of trees. For more information on upcoming events, check the Goleta
Valley Beautiful Volunteer Calendar at www.goletavalleybeautiful.org or call
685-7910.
Thanks to the 16 members of Carnales in Aztlan for contributing 50 service
hours to help maintain young trees in Goleta on Saturday afternoon January
26th. The group received training in how to correctly prune young trees
and started work on the trees of the Brandon campus. However due to
locked gates, the group relocated to Ellwood School where removed stakes and
ties (where appropriate) and structurally pruned over 40 young trees previously
planted by GVB volunteers. The group later moved to Santa Barbara Shores
Avenue where 15 Chinese Pistache and New Zealand Christmas trees were serviced,
including removal of Treegators (portable tree irrigators), stakes, ties, and
providing some structural pruning under professional supervision.
This event was sponsored by grants from California ReLeaf Urban Forestry, Santa
Barbara Foundation, UCSB Coastal Fund, the Alliance for Community Trees/Home
Deport Foundation, and GVB donor members.

- 4884 Via Los Santos Goleta, CA 93117, Joe and Michele Drum
February’s award winners, Joe and Michele Drum, of 4884 Via Los Santos in
Santa Barbara County, wanted to maximize their hillside lot by captur-ing 180
degree views. Starting with a stand of olive and fruit trees the
owners worked with landscape architect Robert Fowler to lay out a low
mainte-nance Mediterranean garden with pathways throughout. Using stones
and boulders excavated from the property, Landscape Contractor Arturo Gonzales
of Progressive Care pulled the entire hardscape and planting palette together
mixing natives and Mediterranean plants for understory and bedding. As
owner Michele Drum says, “There are only a few places in the world where you

Celebrate
California Arbor Week with 2 GVB special events
GVB will be sponsoring several special events to celebrate
California Arbor Week March 7 -14. We'll start on March 6 with the
planting of 70 redwood trees at Stow Grove by Laguna Blanca elementary
students. The students grew the trees originally, and will track the
trees growth over time as a school project. The school will treat them to
lunch afterwards at the Grove, with desserts provided by the Native Daughters
of the Golden West, Reina del mar.
On March 7 at 11 am, Goleta Mayor Michael Bennett and 2nd
District County Supervisor Janet Wolf will plant an Arbor Day tree in
front of the Goleta Community Center. The tree is an exact copy of
the Witness Tree located in the middle of the Sizzler Restaurant.
The 250 year old+ sycamore is Goleta's only officially designated historic
landmark tree. Other big announcements are anticipated.
GVB graduates
31 Citizen Pruners at Workshop
Thanks to the 31 newly certified Citizen Pruners who attended the Saturday February
2, 2008 workshop. The day-long training consisted of morning classes
regarding tree biology, tree ID, pruning techniques and tree structure.
Following a noontime quiz, the participants practiced their skills at the
Optimist Oak Grove in Los Carneros Park under the supervision of experienced
and certified Arborists.
Dan Condon, Dougal House, George Jimenez and Ken Knight provided guidance and
instruction to the participants, who left with a practical understanding of
proper pruning techniques for young shade trees. Participants represented
areas throughout the Central Coast including Paso Robles, Atascadero, Santa
Maria, Orcutt, Lompoc, Goleta and Santa Barbara.
Sponsors for this event included the Central coast Region Urban Forest Council,
Goleta Valley Beautiful, the Goleta Union School District, California ReLeaf
Urban Forest Grant and Santa Barbara Foundation.
La
Patera adds 26 trees to its campus
Thanks to the 38 volunteers who contributed 135 community service hours to
plant 26 trees and 2 additional replacement trees at La Patera School on
Saturday February 9th. Volunteer groups attending include
students and parents of La Patera School along with Principal Patricia
Santiago, UCSB student volunteers from La Esculita, Gamma Phi Beta, Delta Delta
Delta, Kappa Kappa Gamma, Alpha Delta Pi, and GVB Community members.
A variety of trees were planted including Liquidambar (without the sticky
balls), Mulberry, Ginkgo, Island Oak, Coast Live Oak, Alder, Ironwood, Torrey
Pine, Canary Island Pine, Sycamore, Big Leaf Maple, and Persimmon. Two
Forest She-Oaks were replaced from ones planted earlier this year that failed
during drought conditions. We don’t double count trees as new trees that
we have had to replace in the first two years after planting.
This planting event was made possible by grants from The California Department
of Forestry and Fire Protection, UCSB Coastal Fund, and the Santa Barbara
Foundation. Additional support came from West Covina Nursery, the Goleta
Union School District, Devereux of Santa Barbara, and hundreds of GVB donor
members.
Tree
Care events emphasize pruning at schools, parks and streets
The Citizen Pruner training program continued on Saturday afternoon February 9th
with 10 volunteers from Rotaract, Tri Delta and the Goleta Valley
community. Under the experienced supervision of GVB trainers Dan Condon,
George Jimenez and Ken Knight, the volunteers started off by pruning 13 young
trees on the La Patera campus, as well as removing stakes from trees that no
longer needed them, and adding stakes to new young trees for greater
protection.
The group then moved on to Brandon School where 6 Willow trees planted by GVB
volunteers 5 years ago were given a custom pruning job to raise their crowns
and establish central leaders. Finally the group moved over
to Coronado Drive to remove stakes, ties, Treegators (portable tree irrigators)
for street trees planted several years ago, after which the trees were lightly
pruned.
UCSB
students contribute to maintaining Isla Vista trees
Thanks to the 16 volunteers who contributed 50 service hours as part of Goleta
Valley Beautiful's Citizen Pruner Training Program on Saturday afternoon Feb
16th. Volunteers from UCSB's Delta Delta Delta, Alpha Kappa Delta Phi,
and Alpha Chi Omega learned proper young tree pruning techniques from Goleta
Valley Beautiful's trainers. Then they pruned over 50 trees at
Trigo-Pasado, Sueno, Orchard, Estero and Camino Corto Parks. The trees
were all young trees previously planted by Goleta Valley Beautiful volunteers
at Isla Vista Recreation and Park District locations.
Thanks also to the 11 volunteers who contributed 36 hours as part of our
Citizen Pruner tree care event on the afternoon of 2-23-08. Volunteers
from Tri Delta and Theta received tree pruning instructions from GVB trainers
Dan Condon, George Jimenez, Mark Broomfield and Ken Knight, after which they
braved the cold winds to care for young trees. Fifteen young trees at
IVRPD’s Camino Corto Park were pruned, eight trees at Fire Station 11, and ten
trees along the Girsh Park Phelps Road parkway were shown special treatment
that included formative pruning, stake and tie removal, and weeding where
appropriate. Another 30 trees in the Storke Road median were
professionally pruned by Dan Condon with assistance from Mark Broomfield.
Dos
Pueblos volunteers continue beautification of the campus
Thanks to the 114 volunteers who contributed 276 service hours at the Dos
Pueblos High Tree Care Event. There were so many volunteers at this event
that we could not identify all of them on our sign in sheets. Groups that
we could identify from UCSB included Hermanas Unidas, Tri Delta, Latino
Business Association, CSUN, and several other organizations that would could
decipher. Also participating were volunteers from Dos Pueblos High
School, Beautify Dos Pueblos, Rotary, Goleta Valley High School, Work Training
Programs, and GVB volunteers with no affiliation.
We spread 24 cubic yards (3 dump trucks) of construction mulch on the Cathedral
Oaks side of the student parking lot, installed about 300 square feet of
additional weedblock, planted 10 24” box Fern Pines along the east of the
batting cages, weeded and installed weedblock along previously planted trees
west of the baseball fields, and pruned/removed stakes for trees planted along
Cathedral Oaks Road. We’ll return next month to prune away dead material
on the newly planted Fern Pines, and spread more mulch.
Thanks to sponsorship from Bob Townsend who donated the Fern Pines, the UCSB
Coastal Fund, Santa Barbara Foundation, Santa Barbara County Solid Waste
Division for the mulch, Beautify Dos Pueblos and GVB donors.

Consumer
Alert -Beware Contractors Who Top Shade Trees!
We've
seen a resurgence of non-reputable contractors advertising that they offer tree
topping services. Many uninformed consumers are led to believe that
this is an acceptable horticultural practice approved by professionals, when
exactly the opposite is the case. "Topping is probably the most
damaging and detrimental thing a person can do to a tree," says Sharon
Lilly, Director of Education for the International Society of Arboriculture.
Tree topping is unhealthy to trees and better alternatives are
available . Don't ask for topping and beware contractors who
advertise these services as they may not be up to date on the latest
pruning methods. For more information on why topping hurts trees, go to Trees
Are Good
The International Society of Arboriculture
Western Chapter maintains a toll-free number with experts on call who can
advise on tree care: 1-866-785-TREE (8733). The International Society of
Arboriculture also has a hotline for tree care, 1-888-ISA-TREE (472-8733).

- Santa Barbara City Airport fire Station No. 8

Located in the heart
of the Goleta Valley on the north side of the airport property is Santa Barbara
City Airport Fire Station No. 8, the Goleta Valley Beautiful April Award
Winner. Planted July 1997, this mature mediterranean landscaping
incorporates drought tolerant and fire resistant plantings with traditional
landscaping. A large century plant grouping is an eyecatching introduction to
Station 8. Planting beds feature a variety of textures and colors
of low maintenance, low water groundcover and succulents. Palms and
deciduous trees are interspersed in the landscape design created by Fowler,

California
Arbor Week Celebrated in Style
(2-4)
Thanks to the 51 students from Laguna Blanca Lower School, their teachers and
families who participated in the planting of 51 redwood trees at Stow Grove
Park on March 6, 2008. The original 1 gallon size trees originally
donated by Dawn and Pierce O’Donnell were transplanted to 5 gallon containers
last October, and have been rapidly growing at the Devereux growing grounds of
Goleta Valley Beautiful. The holes for the trees were predug on
Wednesday afternoon with the assistance of an energetic group of Laguna Blanca
teachers and family volunteers, along with City of Goleta and Goleta Valley
Beautiful volunteers. This careful preparation allowed the children to
enjoy planting the trees in a relatively short period of time. We
greatly enjoyed the lunch provided by Laguna Blanca. Tasty dessert
cookies were provided by Reina Del Mar Parlor 126, daughters of the Golden
West.
An
additional 23 trees were planted by La Patera students on the afternoon of
March 6, after which City staff John Shields and GVB crew Dan Condon and
Mark Broomfield watered in all 74 trees. We look forward to the
Laguna Blanca students monitoring of the trees with GPS units as they progress
through school.
On
Friday, March 8th, Goleta Mayor Michael Bennett, joined by Councilwoman Jean
Blois and Second District Supervisor Janet Wolf, proclaimed March 7-14 as
California Arbor Week at the Goleta Valley Community Center The
elected officials met in commemoration of famed plant geneticist Luther
Burbank’s birthday and celebrated with the planting of a sycamore tree on the
Center’s front lawn. The tree is a clone of the 250+ year old landmark
Witness Tree that stands nearby in the center of the Sizzler Restaurant.
Goleta Valley Beautiful President Merlyn Cummings and GVB Board members were also
present to hear Mayor Bennett announce the award of an $80,000 grant to the
City from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. The
grant will help assist in the creation of an urban forestry management plan for
the City of Goleta. The plan will be developed with assistance from
Goleta Valley Beautiful.
30
new trees planted at local schools during March
(5-7)Thanks
to the 11 volunteers who contributed 33 service hours at El Camino Elementary
School on Saturday March 1. Joining Principal Kim Bruzzese and her
daughter Jordan were students and parents from El Camino as well as UCSB and
GVB volunteers. Volunteers planted ten trees including two replacements
for trees from last April’s planting, and provided formative pruning for
existing young trees.
Thanks to the 56 volunteers who contributed 168 community service hours to
plant 20 trees at San Marcos High on Saturday morning March 8. The trees
planted included 11 Coast Live Oak and ten Island Oak trees grown from locally
collected acorns and raised at GVB’s Devereux Greenhouse. The trees are
located at the northern end of the bleachers next to the stadium. Over the past
two years, Goleta Valley Beautiful volunteers have planted 140 trees on the San
Marcos campus. Volunteer groups participating
included the Vietnamese Students Association, Pi Kappa Epsilon, Pi Kappa Alpha,
Tri Delta and Alpha Delta Pi.
Forty
UCSB students took a break from studying for finals on Saturday morning March
15th to provide young tree care at 3 Goleta elementary schools.
Representatives from Alpha Epsilon Phi, Alpha Chi Omega, Kappa Kappa Gamma,
Delta Delta Delta, Iota Pledge Class of Sigma Alpha Zeta, and other GVB
volunteers contributed 120 community service hours in their efforts.
Starting at Foothill School, the volunteers replanted one dead tree with a
sycamore, and pruned 35 trees planted last year, along with weeding and
installing weedblock cloth to reduce future maintenance. Another group
planted two new Coast Live Oak trees in the Ribera Open Space to replace a
Monterrey Pine that died last year. Traveling onto Kellogg School,
volunteers replaced one dead tree with a jacaranda and pruned/weeded/installed
weedblock cloth and mulch to 15 trees. Finally at La Patera, volunteers
moved two existing trees to better locations and weeded/installed weedblock
cloth to 8 trees.
The
tree care efforts are sponsored by Goleta Valley Beautiful donor members, with
the support of funding from the California Department of Forestry and Fire
Protection, a California ReLeaf Urban Forestry Grant, the Santa Barbara
Foundation, the UCSB Coastal Fund, Devereux of Santa Barbara, the Goleta
Union School District, the Santa Barbara School District, and local school
staffs and PTAs.

(8-10)
Thanks to the 22 volunteers who contributed 66 service hours as part of the
Citizen Pruning Tree Care Event Saturday afternoon March 1 at the Calle
Barquero and Tabano Hollow Open Spaces in the unincorporated areas of
Goleta Valley. Volunteers from UCSB Lambda Theta Nu and Alpha Phi Gamma
Beta Sororities joined GVB volunteers to weed, remove ties and stakes and prune
25 young trees at Calle Barquero and 14 trees at Tabano Hollow.
Thanks
to the 6 volunteers who provided 18 community service hours to prune and care
for 25 trees at the Page Youth Center and adjacent FoodBank on Hollister
Avenue. The trees were planted 4 years ago by Goleta Valley Beautiful
volunteers. Today’s volunteers removed stakes, ties and vegetation
growing around the base of the trees, and then performed young tree pruning
under the supervision of a certified arborist.
And
thanks to the 30 Dos Pueblos High volunteers who contributed 90 service hours
on Saturday March 22nd to help maintain the trees on the Dos Pueblos
campus. Approximately 75 trees were weeded and mulched, along with
additional irrigation, mulching and pruning efforts.
These
events were made possible by the UCSB Coastal Fund, Santa Barbar County Solid

Santa Barbara Beautiful/GVB Collaborate at St. Vincent's Tree
planting
Eighty volunteers from 10
different groups came together Saturday April 19th at St Vincent's
on 4200 Calle Real. They celebrated Earth Day by planting 43 trees for
the benefit of the low income and senior residents living there. The day
long project was a joint operation of Goleta Valley Beautiful and Santa Barbara
Beautiful.
Among
the groups contributing 253 service hours was, in the morning session, UCSB
Iota pledge class of Sigma Alpha Zeta, MERC, Alpha Kappa Psi, Master Gardeners,
Tau Pledge Class of Alpha Kappa Psi, Fighting Back Mentor Program, and families
and staff of St. Vincent’s with other community volunteers. In the
afternoon representatives included UCSB Honors Program, NORML (the National
Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws), Goleta Valley Beautiful and St
Vincent’s volunteers.
The
volunteers planted ten different shade tree species that, once established,
will continue to grow without supplemental watering. The trees should
provide environmental benefits for hundreds of years to come.
This event was made possible by grants from Santa Barbara Beautiful, UCSB
Coastal Fund, Santa Barbara Foundation, California ReLeaf Urban Forestry Grant,
Devereux of Santa Barbara, St Vincent's and the generous support of Goleta
Valley Beautiful donor members.
April Tree Care events emphasize maintenance
Thanks to the 12
volunteers and friends from Hermanas Unidas who contributed 30 service hours at
the Saturday morning April 5th tree planting at the Devereux Greenhouse.
The volunteers planted 274 Coast Live Oak acorns in one gallon
containers. These acorns were collected from Goleta Valley Beautiful
volunteer Ed Easton from his heritage oaks adjacent to his house at Kellogg
Ranch. Other volunteers continued the process of mixing soil and filling
15 gallon containers in anticipation of repotting oaks later this spring.
Thanks
to the 24 volunteers who contributed 69 community service hours to
install irrigation lines to trees at San Marcos High School on
Saturday April 12th. Volunteer groups attending included students and
parents from San Marcos High School, along with Calvary
Chapel and GVB Community members. The 1000' of drip irrigation lines
were placed by 14 trees surrounding the Turnpike student parking lot and 18
trees along the west end of the softball fields. The temporary irrigation
to the native Coast Live and Island Oaks will continue for the next two
years while the trees are getting established. Once established, the
trees will be able to live without supplemental watering.
Thanks
to the 15 volunteers who contributed 42 service hours on Saturday
afternoon April 12th as part of a Goleta Valley Beautiful's tree care
program. Volunteers from UCSB's Associated Students Environmental
Affairs Board installed 1000' of irrigation line to 30 trees.
The trees were all young trees previously planted by EAB volunteers at
Isla Vista Recreation and Park District's Camino Corto Open Space ass an offset
to the carbon impacts of presenting last year's Earth Day event. The
temporary irrigation to the native Coast Live will continue for the next
two years while the trees are getting established. Once established, the
trees will be able to live without supplemental watering.
These
events were made possible by the California Department of Forestry and
Fire Protection, UCSB Coastal Fund, Santa Barbara County Resource Recovery
and Waste Management Division, Devereux Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara
Foundation, a California ReLeaf Urban Forestry Grant, San Marcos High PTA,
the Santa Barbara High School District, the Goleta Union School

April Award - 6570 Covington Way
Homeowners for 40 years, Marvin Faucett and Carl Stuart, of 6570 Covington Way
in Goleta, decided it was time to reduce their water bill and update their
front yard. Removing Korean grass and Junipers by themselves, Marvin then
shaped a circular landscape with a birdbath at center and surrounded it with a
brilliant color palette of Heliotrope, Limonium, Marigolds, white and purple
Salvia, Lavender, and ‘Pink Panther’ Flax. Pavers set in ‘California Gold’
chipped rock sets off another bedding with a surrounding pathway. Mr. Faucett
bonsai’d the 90 year old Olive tree for interest and the neighbors couldn’t be
more pleased.
