Irrigating Los
Carneros Trees a time consuming effort
Thanks
to the 13 volunteers who contributed 40 community service hours at a tree
maintenance event at Los Carneros/101 off ramp on Saturday afternoon May 10.
Volunteers installed 60 Treegators (portable tree irrigators) on
previously planted trees. With the aid of a 1000 gallon tanker generously
provided by Kitson Landscape Management and several hundred feet of hoses,
volunteers also assisted in filling 50 of the Treegators with 20 gallons of
water in each. The water will gradually drain out of the Treegators onto
the rootball, providing a very effective and efficient way of watering the new
trees.
Volunteer groups participating
included the UCSB Muslim Student Association and Mountain View School students
and parents.
Twelve volunteers from UCSB Career Services and Mt View School came together
Saturday afternoon May 17th at the Los Carneros southbound offramp off of 101
for a tree irrigation project. The volunteers
contributed 40 community service hours as they provided irrigation to part of
the 140 native trees planted late last year as part of an Environmental
Enhancement and Mitigation Project for the State of California. Once
these trees are established in a few years, they will continue to grow without
supplemental watering. The trees should provide environmental benefits
for as many as 100 years or more. Kudos to the volunteers for
tackling a project with rough terrain, hot weather, and heavy lifting.
This is the first of a series of monthly summer irrigation of the trees, and
the volunteers patiently waited while logistical difficulties were overcome in
parking the water trailer and extending the hoses.
This event was made possible by grants from the California Resources
Department, UCSB Coastal Fund, Santa Barbara Foundation, Devereux of Santa
Barbara, and the generous support of Goleta Valley Beautiful donor members.
Mulching a
priority during May Tree Care events
A few inches of mulch
around a young tree can help it make its way through the dry summers we have
here.
Thanks
to the 18 volunteers who contributed 54 volunteer service hours for a tree care
service project at San Marcos High School on Saturday May 3rd. The
volunteers came from UCSB Circle K, SAHLUD, Mountain View School, and Dos
Pueblos High to install irrigation systems, moved 6 cubic feet of mulch, and
installed weedblock around previously planted trees on the San Marcos campus.
This was the last
regularly scheduled tree care event for the school year at San Marcos, although
GVB volunteers will periodically check the status of the 100+ trees planted on
campus throughout the summer.
Another
round of thanks to the 55 volunteers who contributed 134 community service
hours at a tree planting and landscape maintenance event at Dos Pueblos High
School on Saturday morning May 10. Volunteers moved 8 cubic yards of green waste
mulch (enough to fill a 3 ton dump truck) to the h and m quads, where
volunteers removed weeds and replace them with mulch. Additional
volunteers moved another 8 cubic yards of construction mulch to the front entry
by the redbud trees. Still other volunteers weeded the fire loop in front
of the new theater, weeded 40 trees along Alameda and Cathedral Oaks, and
weeded 40 trees east of the ball fields. Four honor tree plaques were
also installed. A Cub Scout group planted one Coast Live Oak in the
faculty parking lot. The tree was grown from a locally collected
acorn and raised at GVB’s Devereux Greenhouse. Over the past two years,
Goleta Valley Beautiful volunteers have planted over 200 trees on the Dos
Pueblos campus. Volunteer groups participating included Dos
Pueblos High students and families, Bishop Diego High, Kellogg Elementary, UCSB
Circle K, Theta Nu Kappa, a crew from the Helpful Honda Team. Special
thanks to Karen Nielsen who joins the ranks of GVB’s Evergreen volunteers who
have served in 3 or more events this past school year. Karen brings the
total number of 2007-08 GVB Evergreen volunteers to 78. Karen will
receive a certificate and a GVB ball cap in recognition of her efforts.
Forty
one volunteers from 7 different groups came together Saturday morning May 17th
at St Vincent’s on 4200 Calle Real to complete the tree planting project
for the benefit of the low income and senior residents living there. The
project is a joint operation of Goleta Valley Beautiful and Santa Barbara
Beautiful. Among the groups contributing 125 service hours was UCSB
Honors Program, Zeta Phi Rho, Sigma Chi Omega, Alpha Epsilon Phi, Mt. View
School, Dos Pueblos High, and families and staff of St. Vincent’s with other
community volunteers.
The volunteers
installed mulch and irrigation to 42 trees planted during last month’s Earth
Day celebrations. Once these trees are established in a few years, they
will continue to grow without supplemental watering. The trees should
provide environmental benefits for hundreds of years to come.
These
events were made possible by the California Department of Forestry and
Fire Protection, UCSB Coastal Fund, Santa Barbara County Resource Recovery
and Waste Management Division, Devereux Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara
Foundation, a California ReLeaf Urban Forestry Grant, San Marcos High PTA,
the Santa Barbara High School District, Beautify Dos Pueblos,
St. Vincent's, Santa Barbara Beautiful, the Goleta Union School District, the
City of Goleta and hundreds of GVB donor members that help us
to make the time to establish our trees.
Daisies bloom at the Devereux Greenhouse. We enjoyed
the visit of the ten Mountain View Daisy Girl Scouts to the Greenhouse with
their 3 supervisors on May 1st. Goleta Valley Beautiful Executive
Director and Certified Arbor Ken Knight gave the girls a tour of the Growing
Grounds, and then led them through the process of planting Coast Live Oak
acorns in the Devereux Greenhouse. If your group would like to participate

Thanks to SB Airbus for Sponsoring the 7th Annual Goleta Valley Heritage Tree Tour
Thanks to all that participated in our 7th Annual Goleta Valley Heritage Tree tour. The Tour was made possible by Santa Barbara Airbus, which provided our bus and driver for the 7th consecutive year.
Kudos also to Sizzler manager Mike Howell and his staff for allowing us to use the Witness Tree Patio for lunch. The 300 year old landmark sycamore provided an appropriate beginning and ending location for the tour. The Exotic Flora tour at UCSB, a new location on the tour this year, was hosted by Bree Belyea of the Cheadle Center for Biodiversity and Ecological Restoration. along with San Marcos Growers manager Randy Baldwin who helped lay out the tour, we explored many of the non-native trees that are unique to this area.
City Arborist/Parks and Open Space Manager Bill Millar walked us through the grove of 300 90 year old redwoods at Stow Grove Park, as well as introducing us to 60 new redwoods planted by Laguna Blanca students this past year. Tour guide Jerry Sortomme, who is making his 6th appearance as a guide, led us through a captivating explanation of tree sex.
Goleta Valley Beautiful Man of the Year Norm Beard invited us into his 5 acre tropical fruit orchard for a personal tour of his 400 mostly tropical fruit trees.
Our final stop was a visit to the Dos Pueblos Ranch where over 50 90 year old Moreton Bay Fig trees provide a quarter mile column of continuous canopy. Despite an infiltration of invasive ivy, they remain as impressive reminder of the majesty of this area. Thanks to Henry Schulte for permitting us to enter.
Mark your calendars for the all new 8th Goleta Valley Heritage Tree Tour, June 20th, 2009.
July 2008 Business Award - 5827 Hollister Avenue, Goleta, 93117
Our July award winner is Community West Bank at 5827 Hollister Avenue, Goleta. A complete landscape renovation was completed to tie in with the new building façade with the assistance of a grant from the City of Goleta. Color was added to the landscape with Iceberg Roses and Bitsy Day Lilies. Customers are treated with home grown flowers at the tellers’ windows. The arched entrance is flanked with two large potted Amazing Red Flax plants surrounded by succulents. Privet Hedging is used for screening the windows and trash enclosure. Mature trees, Liquid Amber, Chinese Elm, and Ash Trees (one of the largest in Goleta) surround the property. Cotoneaster and Dietes serve as low water maintenance ground cover. The site was converted to drip irrigation with a weather sensor timer. Kitson Landscape and Maintenance designed, installed, and maintains the site.
How do I get rid of oakworms?
We're getting a lot of calls this year about oakworms. While they are messy, generally they don't cause a long term problem to your trees unless they get defoliated several times in one growing season. Cork oaks are getting hit particularly hard this year. The usual course of action is to allow nature to take its course, although there are some alternatives available to try.
If you want to take action to control oakworm growth, we suggest the least toxic method as described in the University of California Integrated Pest management Guidelines at http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/PMG/PESTNOTES/pn7422.html. You may require the assistance of a licensed pest applicator. For more information, call us at 685-7910.
Water Kings and Queens Needed to Adopt FREE street trees in Goleta through a California ReLeaf Tree Planting Grant
We're looking for volunteers within the City of Goleta that are willing to water and weed a tree in a parkway (between the curb and the sidewalk) next to your house for the next two summers. In return, GVB volunteers will install a FREE street tree, along with rootshields (if needed). Specific tree species and locations are subject to City selection criteria. The time to act is now as GVB has secured a grant for only a limited number of trees. To sign up as Water King or Queen, call 685-7910.
My Favorite Tree - 5510 Somerset Drive
Laura Verhassalt and her late husband moved into their brand new house 5510 Somerset in 1961. Mr. Verhassalt wanted a red maple (Acer rubrum) tree in front of his house like the one he had at his Wisconsin farm. The staff at La Sumida Nursery tried to persuade him not to plant a red maple in Goleta. Red Maples like water and cooler weather so this type of tree isn't recommended for this area. Mr. Verhassalt insisted and the tree was ordered. Forty-seven years later, the tree is thriving

A lot gets accomplished in June with dedicated tree care volunteers
The May 31st Saturday afternoon Goleta Valley Beautiful tree care event involved 34 volunteers contributing 101 community service hours for projects at Goleta Union School District Schools. Our projects included replacing 4 previously planted trees at the south end of the IV School ballfields abutting Camino Corto Open Space. The 3 replaced Canary island pines and one Bishop pine are now irrigated with a system installed by other volunteers earlier in the day. We also replaced one Coast Live Oak in the Camino Corto Open Space, replaced a White Alder at Kellogg School, and three White Alders and a Jacaranda at La Patera School. Volunteer organizations represented included UCSB Honors Society, Alpha Epsilon Phi and a large contingent from Pi Kappa Alpha (Pike).
Thanks to the 7 volunteers who contributed 23 community service hours providing tree care to 4 Goleta Union School District campuses on Saturday morning June 7th. During UCSB finals, volunteers came from San Marcos, Dos Pueblos, Raytheon and Goleta Valley Beautiful. At Mountain View School, the trees were weeded, watered, mulched, restaked, retied, and pruned where needed. At Foothill, in addition to tree care, we replaced one Ginkgo that we thought had been weed whacked to death, but in fact it had been eaten by gophers. Hollister School had a number of fast growing trees requiring staking of center leaders to encourage straight growth. Finally at El Camino in addition to tree care, we watered several trees at the periphery. Several trees beyond the irrigation system have not become established as anticipated and will likely require replacement in the fall.
Five volunteers, including two UCSB Tri Deltas taking time out from finals to spend 18 community service hours providing tree care to 3 Goleta Union School district campuses on Saturday afternoon June 7th.At the GUSD headquarters, we replaced a previously planted Black Walnut with a White Alder more suited to the moist conditions. At Brandon School we watered trees in the front that needed additional irrigation, and also at the west end of the school we watered where a drip irrigation system awaits reinstallation. Finally at Ellwood, we replaced two pines, two oaks and one ironwood in the north field due to a lack of irrigation (the drip system was turned off). Also one failed tree in the kindergarten area was replaced with an Island Oak.
As part of a Goleta Valley Beautiful follow-up tree care event, fourteen volunteers contributed 35 service hours on Saturday morning May 31st to provide tree care for previously planted trees in the Isla Vista area. Our projects included extending a drip irrigation system to previously planted trees at the south end of the IV School ballfields abutting Camino Corto Open Space. We also replaced two sycamores along Mesa Road that did not survive the initial planting from late last year, along with weeding and pruning of the trees. We did not encounter the large bear that UCSB police warned us of as they were present patrolling the area. A new hazard to tree planting! We also fixed irrigation leaks and weeded ironwood trees installed last year by EAB volunteers. Volunteer organizations represented included UCSB Honors Society, Environmental Affairs Board, and Alpha Epsilon Phi.
These events were made possible by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, UCSB Coastal Fund, Santa Barbara County Resource Recovery and Waste Management Division, Devereux Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara Foundation, a California ReLeaf Urban Forestry Grant, San Marcos High PTA, the Santa Barbara High School District, Beautify Dos Pueblos, Neighborhood Defense League of California, Santa Barbara Beautiful, the Goleta Union School District, the City of Goleta, the Goleta Union School District, the Isla Vista Recreation and Park District, and the generous support of hundreds of GVB donor members that make the time to help us establish our trees.

It is available free as a download.
June 2008 Award - 381 Sylvan Drive, Goleta, 93117
Sally and Barry Cunningham of 381 Sylvan Drive, Goleta, first thought of a yard remodel the motivation was to tear out the juniper hedge and open up the parkway. More ideas ensued: a new walkway, entryway, low maintenance plants where a thirsty lawn had been, and a dry river bed. With their input, Michael Snyder and California Landscapes did the entire job from hardscape to plantings. Favorites of the Cunninghams are the Senna ‘Ray’s Splendor’ tree, the many grasses (Pennisetums, Festucas,Seslaria) the yellow Achillea ‘Moonshine’, Phormium ‘Terracotta’, Loropetalum ‘Razzleberry’, the, creek, boulders, and brick walkway.

August 2008 GVB Residential Award - 6282 Covington Way, Goleta 93117
August winners, Walter and Nancy Orso of 6282 Covington Way, Goleta, took a landscape class from Billy Goodnick at SBCC Adult Ed., and ended up hiring him to do a design layout. Once a theme of pink and purple with silver highlights was settled upon, along with sustainable concepts, subcontractors were brought in. Systems Paving installed the beautiful driveway/walkway, Raul Ortiz of Bella Vista Landscapes did the plantings and Dan Lovelace was General Contractor. The annual display of Snow in Summer is a show-stopper, and the flowering Catmint, Breath of heaven (Coleonema) and two Cercis Canadensis (Eastern Redbud) are some of the complementary plants. A side vegetable garden, flowering arbor, and pot-as-art add a surprise element and delight to the senses. You can nominate your favorite Goleta Valley Residential property by downloading a nomination form from the website at www.goletavalleybeautiful.org. You can also contact Goleta Valley Beautiful at 685-7910.

City of Goleta Initiating urban Forest Management Plan with the help of GVB and interested citizens
With the help of an $80,000 Proposition 40 grant from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, the city of Goleta has initiated a two year program to prepare an Urban Forest Management Plan for the City of Goleta. GVB's newest staff member Mark Broomfield will be heading the project, with GVB Executive Director Ken Knight serving as an unpaid technical consultant. The purpose of the project is to initiate an Urban Forest Management Plan as called for in the city's General Land Use Plan. In the near future, the city will be requesting volunteers from the public to serve on advisory committees to review work on a State of the Urban Forest and the Guiding Principles that will expand upon the vision and goals for the future Goleta urban forest.
A portion of the research for developing the Goleta urban forest database will come from satellite imagery provided by the Native Communities Development Corporation. Their recently approved contract with the City of Goleta will allow additional map layers and data to be added to the Goleta Geographic Information System to include tree canopy cover, grass, impervious surfaces, water, bare soil and irrigated turf. A State of the Goleta Urban Forest resource assessment currently underway will also include information developed from the recently completed research report from Executive Director Ken Knight entitled "Planning and Financing Future Urban Forests". This research report, available to download at www.goletavalleybeautiful.org/ , includes a the City of Goleta as a case studying for a method to secure long term funding for the care of urban forests. The research report was supported by the USDA Forest Service Urban and Community Forestry Advisory Program on the recommendation of the National Urban and Community Forestry Advisory Council. Interns Eirin Bareis, CJ Cintas, and Leah Schulman are already hard at work on developing the State of the Urban Forest Report that will be ready for public review in the fall of 2008.

Interns help GVB get through the hot days of summer
Much of our summer activity is at our Greenhouse where interns Maxx Echt, Elyse Bekins, Jessica Sprigg and Josh Kruger have been diligently repotting last years saplings into 15 gallon containers, as well as caring for the approximately 2000 trees at our Devereux nursery. Internships are made possible through a grant from the UCSB Coastal Fund.
Additional July GVB news
Much of our volunteer effort outside the Greenhouse was spent in watering trees at the Los Carneros, experimenting with Ooze tubes for long term watering, and fixing irrigation systems at Isla Vista School. These events were made possible by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, UCSB Coastal Fund, Santa Barbara County Resource Recovery and Waste Management Division, Devereux Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara Foundation, a California ReLeaf Urban Forestry Grant, San Marcos High PTA, the Santa Barbara High School District, Beautify Dos Pueblos, Neighborhood Defense League of California, Santa Barbara Beautiful, the Goleta Union School District, the City of Goleta, the Goleta Union School District, the Isla Vista Recreation and Park District, 1000 gallon water trailer provided by Kitson Landscape management and the generous support of hundreds of GVB donor members that make the time to help us establish our trees.
The GVB/Cambridge Church litter collection crew collected another 10.5 bags of trash with 16 volunteer hours to push their 2008 collection total to 95.5 bags of trash using 173 volunteer hours. To assist, call don or Judy Nason at 984-4895.<> New GVB Board Member John Ingram joined the Board in June. We'll have additional information about him in future newsletters.<> GVB Executive Director Ken Knight earned a new professional certification last week from the International Society of Arboriculture. In addition to being a Certified Arborist, Ken passed the test to be designated as a Certified Municipal Specialist.

Liberty Elm Tree Installed

Eagle
Scout candidate Sam Verhasselt organized the installation of a Liberty Elm
Tree as part of a Labor Day projects at the Goleta Union School
District. The project included the first planting of the disease
resistant American Elm in this area, along with a bench and commemorative
plaque. The tree and plaque were provided by the Elm Research
Institute of Keene, New Hampshire. They are interested in promoting elm
tree restoration nationwide, as well as providing a living legacy of the
1775 Liberty Elm used as a rallying point for the Sons of Liberty. Sam
organized a crew of twenty adults and scouts from Troop 105 as part of his
Eagle Scout project to install the tree, irrigation, bench, plaque, and
protective stones in mulch surrounding the site.. The noon ceremonies commemorating
the installation were attended by Goleta Mayor Michael T. Bennett and Goleta
Union School District Superintendent Kathleen Boomer. The Native
Daughters of the Golden West Reina Del Mar Parlor 129 provided

Upgrades to the Greenhouse and
GVB Truck While Gearing Up for the 2008-09 Planting Season

We've
been busy upgrading the capacity of our truck to handle larger scale volunteer
efforts. Events with 40 to 50 volunteers is becoming much more common, so
we've upgraded the capacity of our truck to handle more volunteers with the
help of grants from California ReLeaf. It's been 5 years since the
lat upgrade, so we were due.
In
addition to our Coastal Fund interns, volunteers from San Marcos, DP,
Rotaract-, SB County Probation Department and other community volunteers
have helped our Devereux Growing Grounds expand to 2000 trees, which need
several years to grow before we can plant them. We'll need about 500
trees this year to plant at upcoming projects at UCSB, Isla Vista, City of
Goleta, Dos Pueblos High, San Marcos High and in riparian corridors around the
Goleta Valley. Our grant program at Dos Pueblos and San Marcos was
not funded for this year, although we will still make an effort to continue
planting at these schools with community support in the form of volunteers and donations.

October 2008 GVB
Residential Award Winner 5454 Berkeley Road, Goleta CA 93117
Homeowners Charles and
Carla McClure are the October winners at 5454 Berkeley Road in Goleta.
Since simplicity, beauty and economy of space are main elements of Charles
McClure’s style as a landscape architect he decided to showcase his personal
preferences by creating his own landscape. This entailed designing a
plant palette of just 2-5 plants that are repeated, and experimenting with
materials such as tumbled glass, which he mixed himself. Creating
movement in panels that replace lawn and sets off the gravel was a challenge
but not the drought tolerant plants. Echiveria, Miscantus, Mulhenbergia,
Helictotrichon and Phormium undulate across the dark concrete path for a
striking and modern palette by-owner. See more in the December 2008 issue
of Sunset. Photo & write-up by Bonnie Freeman

Day of Caring on September 20th Brings out a Crowd of 175
volunteers
Thanks to the 175 volunteers who
contributed 501.5 community service hours at the Annual Day of Caring event at
Dos Pueblos High School on Saturday morning September 20. Volunteers planted 27
native trees on the hillsides north of the gym and pool, covered the hillsides
with 32 cubic yards of construction mulch (enough to fill four, three-ton dump
trucks), installed over 500 feet of drip irrigation to the newly planted trees,
the entire area surrounding the Performing Arts Center/faculty Parking
lot/Admin Building/Flagpole area was cleaned, weeded, watered, pruned and
mulched, filling a 40 cubic green waste, recyclable and trash roll-off
dumpsters to the brim.
The United Way Day of Caring staff coordinated volunteer groups from Westmont
College (112 volunteers), Santa Barbara Bank and Trust (20 volunteers) and
Mission Linen and Supply (9 volunteers). They joined volunteers from Dos
Pueblos High students, families, and teachers led by Beautify Dos Pueblos.
Volunteers from Reina del Mar Parlor No. 126, Native Daughters of the Golden
West assisted in registering volunteers and serving refreshments.
Sponsors for this event included the California Department of Forestry and Fire
Protection, Marborg, the Santa Barbara Foundation, the Santa Barbara School
District, Beautify Dos Pueblos, and hundreds of Beautify Dos Pueblos and Goleta
Valley Beautiful donor members. The trees were grown from a locally collected
acorns and shoots and raised at GVB’s Devereux Greenhouse, sponsored by a grant
from the Green Park Foundation and the UCSB Coastal Fund. Over the past
two years, Beautify Dos Pueblos/Goleta Valley Beautiful volunteers have planted
over 200 trees on the Dos Pueblos campus.

City of Goleta Begins the Urban
Forest Management Plan Public Discussions
On Wednesday, Sept 17, the
City of Goleta held the first public advisory meeting concerning the Urban
Forest Management Plan. This is the first of several monthly meetings which
will take place to inform the public as well as gather opinions and concerns
about the many issues that will be addressed in the Goleta Urban Forest
Management Plan. Starting at 6:30 in the Goleta City Hall Council
Chambers, the meeting was an informational introduction to the public meant to explain
the process of developing the Urban Forest Management Plan and the Advisory
Committee’s place in it. The meeting included an introduction from Community
Services Director Steve Wagner as well as a presentation from Goleta Valley
Beautiful's Urban Forest Project Manager Mark Broomfield. In a question and
answer session that followed, the major concerns presented included fire
safety, view issues, and the limited space in which to plant trees in
street-side planters. Tentative dates for the next meetings are the
second Wednesday of the month. All meetings will be held at 6:30 in Goleta Hall
City Council Chambers. However, due to delays in developing the
information needed for the report on baseline conditions in the Goleta Urban
Forest, the October 8th meeting will
be postponed to November12th. For more information and to be placed on the mailing list to receive
updates on the status of the Goleta Urban Forest Management Plan, please

The GVB truck is dead! Long live the GVB truck!

After
five years of constant service with projects every weekend, the engine in the
GVB truck failed. The truck was originally purchased with a grant
from the SB Foundation and contributions from Graham Chevrolet in August
of 2003. The $10,000 cost to replace the engine was beyond our means, and
not recommended for a truck with close to 150,000 miles.
Fortunately, Kitson Landscape Management came to our rescue. Kitson had a
heavy duty flatbed truck, which needed a new transmission, that they
agreed to donate to GVB. In a remarkable show of support from current and
former members of the GVB Board of Directors, President David Fainer organized
a fund drive that resulted in $5500 in funds to pay for the transmission
repair, transfer of the box, hitch and lift on the old truck to the new, and to
have some available for additional repairs. In addition to our current
board members, additional contributors included former board members Sam
Alfano, Lori Roper, Marc Bradley, Doug Winter, and a $1000 grant from the UCSB Coastal
Fund. Thank you all for keeping us running. Long live the truck!
Trees = Math + Science at Oct 23rd Science Night at Kellogg
Elementary

On Thursday evening, October 23rd, over 300 Kellogg Elementary students and
parents participated in the annual Science Night activities. GVB used
modifications to Project Learning Tree tools to teach math and science concepts
to the participants using trees as an example. Students learned how to tell
time through reading tree rings, explored examples of all 27 different species
of trees on the Kellogg campus, and tested acorns for viability, while the
younger students made leaf prints of selected trees. A special treat for
students were Tree Fun Facts for Kids cards provided through a grant from the
Alliance for Community Trees (ACT) in partnership with the Home Depot
Foundation. Children were provided 3 different cards with tree-related
activities that they could do with their parents at home. A limited
number of tool aprons were also distributed with the cards.
Volunteer Science Night Presenters are needed to help with the La Patera
Elementary School Science Night on Thursday November 6 from
5:30 pm to 8 in addition to the Science Nights coming up at El Camino
(February 24), Ellwood (February 26) and several others to be
scheduled. No experience is necessary for these fun events;
we’ll train you on the tree-related math and science presentations we make! For more information, please call us at

December
Award- 626 Mayrum St.

The December winners are Rick and Adrienne
Morinini of 626 Mayrum Street, Santa Barbara County, 93111. Homeowners since
1968, Rick recently retired after 18 years with GWD. Always a collector
of antiques and rusty farm implements he also gathered natural stone from the
foothills, all of which he integrated into their landscape. Adrienne, retired
after 40 years as a hairdresser, began converting their thirsty beds into more
drought resistant plants by adding succulents, cactus, and for whimsy converted
their junipers into bonsai. The whole theme is magical and has created a
haven for friends and neighbors. As their daughter Lynette said, “in a
track where many people come and go as renters, their long-term commitment to
their home has resulted in a jewel for the area.”
Thanks to Kitson
Landscape Management, Inc. for Truck Donation!

When the GVB truck's engine failed, Kitson Landscape Management came
to our rescue. Kitson had a heavy duty flatbed
truck, which needed a new transmission, that they agreed to donate to
GVB. Shown above is Sarah Kitson and Dave Fuderich handing
over the keys to the 1995 Ford 450 truck to GVB President David C. Fainer,
Jr. With the help of Jim Verhasselt of JV Enterprises and former GVB Board
member Doug Winter, the old box was transferred to the new truck. Within a week
GVB was back in business! Thanks again to all of our current and
former Board members and the UCSB Coastal Fund for supporting the cost of
converting to the Ford truck. Thank you all for keeping us running.
Long live the truck!

GVB Executive Director Resigns
from Planning Commission-- Urban Forest Management Plan to continue
GVB Executive Director Ken Knight
has resigned from his position as Planning Commissioner in order to concentrate
his efforts on Goleta Valley Beautiful and on the contract with the City of
Goleta to develop an Urban Forest Management Plan. Mr. Knight wanted to avoid
any appearance of conflict of interest between his role as a Planning
Commissioner and his responsibilities as Executive Director. The Urban
Forest Management Plan is a partnership between the City of Goleta and GVB
that is financed in part by contributions from the City, GVB, and a grant from
the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
Satellite data on the status of the Goleta urban forest is
now available and GVB is working to produce a State of the Goleta Urban Forest
report.
The next public advisory group
meeting may occur either on Wednesday evening December 10th or
January 14th. For more information or to

Dear Friends,
Thank you for logging on to the Goleta Valley Beautiful website. It is hoped you will visit our site regularly and check our volunteer calendar.
