Major tree planting events kick off the fall tree planting season
GVB's fall tree planting program starts with the September 15th United Way Annual Day of Caring. We anticipate up to 200 Westmont student volunteers to join forces with Dos Pueblos High and Beautify Dos Pueblos families to plant 40 trees, install drip irrigation, weedblock and mounds of mulch. The Native Daughters of the Golden West will also be present to provide goodies to the volunteers. Volunteers will be asked to park at the student parking lot off Alameda and walk over to the registration area by the Distinguished School sign in the Faculty parking lot. Because of the large number of volunteers anticipated, we could use the loan of gloves, shovels, hoes, pitchforks and wheelbarrows, all clearly identified with contact information written on them.
The following week we'll have our first major tree planting of the year at San Marcos High. We'll be meeting at the end of the Stadium Access Road off Turnpike where we'll be planting 20 trees and installing drip irrigation. Two weeks later on October 6th, we'll be planting 35 trees at Mountain View School with Principal Bob Woods. For more information on our tree planting events, call 685-7910.
UCSB intern Joey Lecky joins Ryan Schauland working at the Devereux Greenhouse this summer, and we said goodbye to Abby Horn and Adran Young. These internships are made possible by the UCSB Shoreline Preservation Fund. And after the third time our resident possum trapped himself looking for food in our open ended recycle can, we finally put a lid on it to keep him out.
Tree Diversity Project Continues
GVB volunteers planted 4 Forest She-Oaks (Allocasaurina torulosa) at La Patera School and one at Kellogg School as part of a Tree diversity Project in cooperation with the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden and local cities and schools. The objective is to reestablish species of trees that once flourished in this area, as well as introduce new non-invasive varieties that are appropriate to our Mediterranean climate. Thanks to California ReLeaf for their support of this project.
New Board Member, August maintenance projects and other kudos
For the first time, a high school student has joined the GVB Board Directors. Dos Pueblos High Senior Melody Tan will act as a liaison to Dos Pueblos High as part of our many activities there. Check the GVB website for photos of all our directors and how to contact them.
The GVB/Cambridge Community Church Litter Crew led by Don and Judy Nason spent 22.5 hours collecting 14 bags of roadside litter in August They will be taking the month of September off on vacation, but we suspect there will be a pile of litter waiting for them on their return.<>Martha and Gus Degassis, Trish Kreiss are keeping the Hollister Ave corridor watered and weeded each week. Some of the vines have already reached the top of the wall! We're looking for sponsors to help expand this project in response to requests from neighbors in the Via El Cuadro area.
Also joining our administrative staff on a part time basis is Christine Hartsock, who will be assisting getting our paperwork in order.
Work Training Program crews continue to provide lifesaving water to new trees in schools and County parks during August. Devereux clients and Evergreen Devereux Greenhouse volunteers Stacia and Adran Young worked 18 hours reinforcing earthen banks with railroad ties provided by Friendship Manor, mixing soil and finishing repotting last year's tree crop.
And a special thanks again to Helen McFerrin who every couple of months loads up at Costco with portable drinks and snacks for our volunteers. She's an angel.

Annual NeighborWoods/Make A Difference Day Tree Planting Events in October
October is Neighborwoods Month, a national campaign of the Alliance for Community Trees(ACT) to promote urban forestry regreening, educational and training efforts. Goleta Valley Beautiful will be hosting several NeighborWoods events at Mountain View Elementary, San Marcos High and Dos Pueblos High.
Our final October celebration will be on Saturday the 27th. The location has been changed from Girsh Park to Dos Pueblos High softball field entrance off Cathedral Oaks Road about 100 yards west of Glen Annie Rd. In addition to planting twenty trees, we'll be moving a small mountain of mulch, pruning young trees , installing irrigation lines and cleaning out stubborn weeds. Lunch will be available at noon.
Tree planting season begins with 74 trees planted.
GVB's fall tree planting program started with 74 trees planted, including 46 at Dos Pueblos, 20 at San Marcos and 2 replacement trees each at Ellwood,, Kellogg, GUSD District offices and San Marcos. Thanks to the approximately 200 volunteers at the September 15th, 2007 Day of Caring Project at Dos Pueblos High School. The volunteers planted 46 trees, spread 175 cubic yards of mulch, and weeded 2 quad lawns. In addition to Dos Pueblos High School students and families affiliated with Beautify Dos Pueblos, volunteer groups represented included Westmont College, the Towbes Group, the City of Goleta, Real Santa Barbara Soccer Club, AGIA Insurance, the Native Daughters of the Golden West, and Goleta Valley Beautiful.
The 9/15 event would not have been possible without the support of Santa Barbara County United Way for the Day of Caring Coordination, the Santa Barbara County Solid Waste Public Works Division for mulch deliveries that took an entire day, to Marborg Industries for the donation of a roll off dumpster, to the California Department of Forestry Green Trees for the Golden State Grant for the trees, to the Shoreline Preservation Fund and the Devereux Foundation for support in growing most the trees and to West Covina Nursery for the remainder, to the Santa Barbara Foundation for volunteer training assistance, to the Santa Barbara School District, and to all those who gave their time and money to Beautify Dos Pueblos and Goleta Valley Beautiful so that we can make our schools a better place to live and learn.
And thanks to the 23 volunteers who contributed 68 service hours to plant 20 trees at San Marcos High School on Saturday 9/22. The 14 Coast Live Oaks and 6 Catalina Ironwood trees were planted along the stadium access road above parking lot A off turnpike Road. The oaks were grown from local seed collected in the Ellwood area, and grown at the Goleta Valley Beautiful growing ground in Isla Vista, while the Ironwood trees were raised from smaller trees provided by West Covina Nursery. Jaime with the San Marcos Grounds Crew and his assistant helped install the drip irrigation system to each of the 20 trees.
The 9/22 project was supported through grants from the California Department of Fire and forestry, the Santa Barbara Foundation, the Shoreline Preservation Fund, and with support from Devereux Santa Barbara. Drinks and snacks were generously provided by the San Marcos PTA, with additional support from the Mason family.
And on 9/29, 32 members of UCSB's Hermanas Unidas contributed 96 community service hours to improvements to the Devereux Greenhouse Ground Grounds, including constructing 200 feet of retaining walls, mixing soil, filling and moving pots, weeding and sweeping the grounds, mowing the lawns and installing house numbers on the 16 rows of trees.

November Events - Tree Plantings at Hollister & DP, Treegators, and Greenhouse planting
Our planned November 3rd tree planting at Camino corto was postponed to sometime later in Novbember/December due to dry weather. Its tough to plant in hard clay if it isn't softened up. We're bringing volunteers over to the Devereux Greenhouse that day to help get ready for our annual acorn plantings, and to help repot and reorganize protions of our 1500 tree growing grounds.
Our big plantings of the month will be at Hollister and Dos Pueblos Schools, and at an Isla Vista Park (we haven't narrowed down which one yet). We'll take a break for Thansksgiving and come roaring back on December 1 planting 20 more trees at San Marcos High. Come join us.

December 2007 GVB Award
The December award goes to Jeff and Nancy Watson of 284 Vereda Leyenda in the Rancho Embarcadero area of Goleta. When AIA Architect Murray Duncan topped off their remodel with a beautiful portico, the Watsons’ stage was set to add a landscape. A natural design from Landscape Architect Robert Andrew Fowler allowed the Watsons’ to take on the contracting. Jeff did much of the stonework and plant installation, all the while checking with Nancy. Water conservation was a main concern so they limited a grassy area and installed wide borders of flowering white, yellow and blue plants. Birch trees, a Jacaranda and flowering Magnolia dot the garden. A path of ‘Aztec Gold’ stone, and a wall of Santa Barbara sandstone presents a welcoming setting against the nearby hills.
