3. Report on Oct 21 Executive Committee Meeting – Sam
3.1.   Sam reviewed the November 18th Executive Committee Minutes.  Please review these minutes for details.
4. Treasury Report –Tami
4.1.Tami distributed her reports by email prior to the meeting.
4.2.The revenues are behind due to a late start for the membership campaign, lower revenues for the Lemon Festival than budgeted and delayed reimbursement for project expenses.
4.3.The planned expenses are lagging the budget due to in part to a delayed start of the membership campaign mailings.
4.4.Doug mentioned that Ken previously indicated that he expects expenses to meet and possibly exceed the budget before the close of this fiscal year.  If GVB does not increase revenue, GVB could be in trouble by the end of the fiscal year.  Ken replied that GVB must first spend money on projects before those expenses can be passed on to the State for reimbursement.  There can be a reimbursement lag of 2 to 3 months.  Ken mentioned that the budget is a guide and he is actively pursuing additional grants to bring in more revenue.  Ken feels that GVB will be in a favorable position by July 31st.
5. Membership – Lori, Laura and Phebe
5.1. The four letters were mailed 12/2 to all zip codes.  Letters to new prospective people have not yet been mailed to zip codes 93110 and 93111.

9.2. GVB has submitted a Leaf It To Us grant on behalf of Goleta Valley Jr. High School for the planting of 43 trees on campus.
9.3Ken described a National Arbor Day Resource Kit available for the schools.
9.4.The February 5th Workshop, conducted at the Goleta Union School District, will be a “how to” discussion for the general public.

9.4.3. Ken is seeking sponsors for the Workshop such as: The City, The County, News-Press and others.
9.4.4. Optimist Grove annual maintenance is going to be in January.  Al Turnbull will arrange for Ken to address the Optimist at their January meeting on proper pruning techniques.
10.  Government – Sam
10.1. Ken reports that GVB has been unable to plant trees, within the City because there is a disagreement on specie selection with the Design Review Board (DRB) and the City Council.  The DRB wants to have a uniform selection of a specie while the City Council prefers a diversity of tree species.
10.2.  Goleta has hired Bill Millar, an arborist, as the manager of Parks and Recreation.  Ken hopes that he will work with GVB toward applying for Tree City USA for Goleta.
11. Web Site – Thom
11.1.  The Honor Tree Form has been updated on the web site.
11.2. Lori reported on Web Based Funding.  A cooperating company would agree to divert a percentage of the cost of an item to GVB as an incentive to the public to purchase from them.  A portion of the diverted funds would be sent to a brokering firm which arranged for the relationship between GVB and the Company.  The Board voted to proceed with further investigation of this opportunity.  Ken will investigate further.
12.  Urban Forestry – Thom
12.1. Ken reported that GVB received a tree planting request from Don Parsons for an Honor Tree to be planted at Girsh Park in name of his mother.
12.2. Ken reported that Girsh Park management is favorable to planting additional trees with Prop 12 funding.
13.Executive Directors Report – Ken
13.1.  Ken has been sitting on a County Tree Policy Committee.  The Committee has developed extensive guide lines for how to protect a tree in a construction site.
14.Fundraising – Ken
14.1.  GVB has been awarded the Shoreline Preservation Fund grant of $5,900 for tree planting in Isla Vista.  GVB would hire students from UCSB to plant about 200 trees in parks.  The project will begin early next year.
14.2.  Ken will prepare a grant request for the McCaw grant, which with the Coronado Preserve grant, would support planting 200 trees in the Preserve as replacement trees in the butterfly grove.
14.3.GVB has applied for two Leaf It To Us grants.  The one for Elwood School is for about $1,700 while the one for Goleta Valley Jr. High is for about $2,500.
14.4.Ken is seeking a $43,000 grant from the Environmental Enhancement Mitigation to fund tree planting at the Los Carneros/101 interchange.  This grant would fund the planting of 140 trees in the southwest portion of the interchange.  This would be a truck/trailer watering situation as there is no way to plumb in an irrigation system.  The outcome of this grant proposal will be decided next May.
15.  New Items – Sam
15.1. The Heritage Tree Tour will be organized by Thom.
15.2.  Lori and Marc will organize the Silent Auction.
15.3.  Sam will work on the Annual Banquet.
15.4.  Someone is needed to organize the Advisory Council Meeting in March.
15.5. Last, but not least, Dave Fainer agreed to join the Board.  A big welcome to Dave.
Sam adjourned the Board Meeting at 8:00 am.

- Shoreline Preservation Fund Grant Award for tree planting in Isla Vista - UCSB Associated Student's Shoreline Preservation Fund spf.as.ucsb.edu warded GVB a $5,834 to plant 100 street and park trees in Isla Vista.  94% of the funding will go towards the purchase of trees and supplies, and for hiring student interns to organize IV volunteers for the tree planting efforts.  We'll be working with the IV Recreation and Park District to verify locations for native and non-invasive trees adaptable to our Mediterranean climate.  These funds come from a tax that UCSB students place on themselves for projects that will help the community.  We're currently advertising for students to help fill our project leader positions. For more information call 252-1952.

- Santa Barbara Foundation Funds GVB Porta-Potty  - The Santa Barbara Foundation funded our $1.940 request for a Porta-Potty.  While this may appear humorous at first (no cracks about Executive offices), there are many times that our volunteers have worked through a 4 hour volunteer shift out on the road only to find no restrooms available.  The porta-potty is on a trailer that can be pulled by our GVB truck (funded last year by SB Foundation and Graham Chevrolet) to our worksites.  It comes with a sink, water, soap, and towels for handwashing.  We'll contract with Marborg to service on an as-needed basis.

- Welcome Bill Millar! -The City of Goleta recently hired Certified Arborist Bill Millar as the Parks and Open Space Manager.  Among other items, Bill will be assuming many of the responsibilities for public trees in the City.  We look forward to working with him.

- Tree Planting/Maintenance Requests -  We'll respond to your requests for public trees, or you can contact local governments directly.   In the City of Goleta, send your requests to the Community Services Department, 6500 Hollister Ave Suite 120, Goleta CA 93117.  In the unincorporated areas of the County, contact either the County Parks Department at 610 Mission Canyon Rd., SB 93105-2911 for trees in public parks or the Public Works Department at 123 East Anapamu St., SB 93101 for trees in the public right of way.  You can mention that you would like to work with GVB in planting trees in public areas.

-Neighborhood Cleanups  - Judy Nason and her Cambridge Drive Community Church volunteers cleaned Hollister from Storke to Glen Annie School using 8 man hours and collecting 4 full orange bags of trash with the aid of GVB 'grabber' equipment.  Thanks also to our supporters at Gold's Gym for helping dispose of all the collected trash.   Judy and her group do projects on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month.  GVB will also sponsor neighborhood cleanups at your request, just call 252-1952
- Native Tree Project at Devereux - We've spent the last month replanting much of the seed that was eaten by critters getting into the Greenhouse.  We think it could be a skunk or a raccoon.  Until we can find a way to keep out the critters, we have been temporarily transferring our planted products to a greenhouse in Isla Vista courtesy of Growing Solutions and the IV Park and Rec District.

5. Water Kings and Queens. -

With the heavy rains at the end of December, there should be no need for any watering during the month of January.  Also, please leave mulch placed during planting at the base of the tree but not touching the bark of the trunk.  This helps keep the weeds and grass from growing around the trunk, which in turn means that you won't damage the trunk with a lawn mower or weed trimmer.  Please report any insect, disease or damage problems to GVB at 252-1952.

- Native Tree Project at Devereux - We have trapped ground squirrels inside the greenhouse at Devereux-they are the likely culprits that have been eating the seed we've been planting over the last few months.  We are working on a non-lethal solution to keeping them out.  In the meantime,  we have been temporarily transferring our seed plants to a greenhouse in Isla Vista courtesy of Growing Solutions and the IV Park and Rec District.

5. Water Kings and Queens. -

There should be no need for any tree watering during the month of February due to the rains of early January .  Please check that mulch at the base of the tree is not touching the bark of the trunk.  It may have floated there during recent rains.  Please report any insect, disease or damage problems to GVB at 252-1952.

- Basic Tree Care Workshop -
The evaluations from some of the 85 attendees indicated the workshop was very successful.  The purpose of the workshop was to provide an opportunity for members of the general public to learn the basics of urban forestry in a no risk situation.   We anticipate this general introduction will result in attendees seeking new and continuing relationships with local and regional nonprofit and municipal urban forestry organizations.

This Workshop was made possible through the combined efforts of a number of individuals and organizations.  California ReLeaf provided a Network Exchange Stipend, the Goleta Union School District provided the meeting facilities, the California Urban Forests Council provided many outstanding speakers, and the Goleta Valley Beautiful Board of Directors spent many hours in preparing food and handouts for attendees.  All of the these volunteers and others made it possible to offer this event without charge.
Many of the speakers have provided their presentations on disc so that we can recreate this workshop in other locations.  Santa Maria, Lompoc and San Luis Obispo have expressed a desire to have this workshop at their locations.  If volunteers at their location can provide facilities and a small group of volunteers for organizing, we can begin discussing dates.

Team Depot Day at the Devereux Greenhouse
We had 23 volunteers at the 2/26/05 improvements to the Devereux Greenhouse and growing grounds sponsored by Home Depot.  Team Depot volunteers from several area Home Depot stores worked all day Saturday February 26 to help make the following improvements; replacing wooden slats on the growing tables, constructing squirrel-proof growing containers, repairing holes in the fiberglass structure, removing overgrown vegetation, fixing plumbing leaks and extending irrigation lines to the growing grounds.  Outside the Greenhouse, a fence was installed around the growing grounds, accumulated soil was relocated to fill low spots in the dirt access road, and drip irrigation lines were extended to 500 15 gallon containers.  The containers are being used for transplanting native trees being grown in the greenhouse by Devereux clients, supported by a grant from the Home Depot Foundation.

Thanks to Goleta Home Depot Store Manager Mike Klingsporn for sponsoring and participating in the event, along with staff members Pete Maloney and Carmen Nevarez.  Home Depot provided the materials used, Devereux Foundation Volunteer Coordinator Michael Shea participated and organized Devereux staff to provide snacks and lunch, and Growing Solutions Restoration Institute staff Don Hartley and Dave Mazurklewicz set up the drip irrigation system.  Thanks also to UCSB Circle K volunteers Michelle Sullivan and her crew, and to the ever-present UCSB Intern Kelly Meehan.
