Largest Food Drive in Southeast Begins Friday Nov. 16th

106.9 The Fox conducts 11th Annual Mayflower Marathon

Fox Personalities broadcast over 56 hours to benefit area Foodbanks

(Newport News, VA)  Hunger and food security are impacting the lives of more Hampton Roads residents than in year’s past. In fact, the number served by local food banks increased 30% this past year. More than one-third of those recipients were children.

Changes in the economy force many families to make difficult choices. This winter home heating prices are expected to jump 10%. Oil prices have surpassed $90 a barrel. Food prices have increased by a half a percentage point in September alone.

The Foodbanks depend on community support to fulfill their mission. In 1997, radio station 106.9 The Fox, WAFX, created a Thanksgiving food drive that has become the largest food drive in the Southeast.

The 11th Annual Fox Mayflower Marathon begins at 5am Friday, November 16th and continues until 3pm Sunday, November 18th. Fox personalities will broadcast on location and volunteers will collect donations of food and money on both sides of the water:

Pembroke Mall on Virginia Beach Boulevard in Virginia Beach

·         Original Mattress Factory in the Oyster Point Shopping Center in Newport News

The Fox Mayflower Marathon benefits the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Foodbank of the Virginia Peninsula.

“I don’t know what we’d do without their food drive every year,” says Loretta Jones, Director of Development with the Peninsula Foodbank, “We distributed more than 8.5 million pounds of food last year on the Peninsula alone. The need this year is greater than ever.”
