There are a number of ways you can help:
  1. Definition of a Food Drive

A food drive is a concentrated effort to collect non-perishable food and certain non-food essentials to help individuals facing hunger.  The Foodbank of the Virginia Peninsula welcomes and depends on food drive donations year round and will gladly work with you to organize a successful food drive.

    Why Food Drive?

Nearly 150,000 people on the Peninsula may go hungry; over 60,000 of them are children. Hunger does not discriminate by age, sex or race. It affects the elderly, the homeless, the unemployed and the working poor as well as victims of natural disasters. Twenty pounds of food can provide a week’s worth of meals for one person, so donations of any size can really make a difference.
Through food drives we are able to obtain much needed food and educate others who are unaware of hunger's devastation. Food that is contributed through food drives is some of the highest quality food that we distribute because it is food that the donor has either purchased or acquired for their own personal use.

NOW THAT YOU’RE READY TO HAVE A FOOD DRIVE, THE FOODBANK CAN HELP!

H   We can supply collection barrels, boxes, signs and flyers.

H  We can provide you with information about the Foodbank, hunger and the need in your community.

H  We can send someone to speak to your organization.

H  We have trucks available for larger pick-ups.

H  Please consider, however, that our trucking capabilities are limited. We keep our trucks on the road picking up donations from food distributors and grocery stores, as well as getting food distributed to folks in need.

H  Any transportation you or your group can volunteer is greatly appreciated!

H  Strategies for your food drive:

H  Place food receptacles in central areas that are accessible to all individuals in the establishment.

H  For smaller food drives, you can personalize cardboard boxes by decorating them to your taste.

H  For larger drives, the Foodbank has barrels that can be used.

      1. Change Drives

Want to help many but have limited space and time?

      We have a solution!

Why not try our change jug? The change jug allows a few to help many. The five-gallon jug lets people put pocket change in it for needy individuals.

      For every
$1.00 dollar raised the Foodbank can provide four meals to our neighbors in need! That’s only .25 a meal! WOW!

How to Organize a Successful Food or Fund Drive

Why should you hold a food / fund drive?

Unfortunately, requests for food from the Foodbank consistently exceed our supply. We need to expand existing resources and identify new sources of donated goods.

Food / fund drives are also a great way to build morale and teamwork in any organization. They are an easy community project to undertake and they provide quality food and grocery items, as well as cash to acquire these things, to help your neighbors in need.

Organizing your food / fund drive:

Coordinating a food / fund drive requires both good organization and promotion. It is helpful to establish a steering committee to determine the type, theme, duration, and dates of your drive. Most food drives are held for two weeks. The Peninsula Foodbank is capable of providing collection boxes for cash donations and collection barrels for food donations. We can schedule both delivery and pick up of these items with a minimum 3 day notice (a 1 week notice is best).

      • Select a theme relevant to the interest of the community members and that responds to their feelings toward the need.

      •  Kick off your food / fund drive with a volunteer steering committee that will plan the event.

      •  Set a goal for your food / fund drive – How many pounds of food would you like to collect? Or how many barrels would you like to fill? How much cash would you like to collect?

      • Coordinate collection and delivery. Make sure drop-off sites are convenient and visible so that it will act as continuing publicity for your campaign.

      • Distribute flyers or posters to develop community awareness about hunger and your food drive campaign.

      • For companies with several departments plan a competition. The department with the most food or cash collected receives a pizza party. See if your company would be willing to give the person with the single largest donation in each department 1 day off with pay. For schools, colleges and other learning institutions, see if a local company would donate a small gift certificate for the student with the single largest donation.

Remember to acknowledge contributions. Appreciation can be expressed in a number of ways. Write a letter to the editor, or to individual donors. Hold a breakfast or luncheon meeting to recognize staff for their efforts.

      Most Needed Items

      • The Peninsula Foodbank can provide 4 meals for every $1 donated!
      • High protein foods such as canned meats (tuna, chicken, salmon, etc.), peanut butter, and beef stew

    Food Drive Success Tips:

    Start early

    • Select a leader or a leadership committee and begin assigning responsibilites.
    • Set a specific start and finish date for the drive.
    • Have a central location to bring for collections to make it easier for you to keep track of your fund drive.
    • After you have completed your fund drive, you may either bring the money to the Food Bank or we can send a representative to your location to pick it up.
    • Set goals to give participants something to work toward and create a benchmark for success. (total pounds or cans per person and total $ per person) For example, the goal could be to collect your weight in food.

     Getting Started:

    1.       Contact Loretta Jones  Loretta@foodbank.ws  or scroll to the bottomof this page.

    2.        Once we receive your registration, we will contact you to schedule an appointment for you to drop off the collections at the Food Depository or arrange for a Food Depository driver to pick up your donation (minimum seven boxes).

    3.       Advertise your food drive! Let others share in the fun of collecting food for the hungry by advertising your food drive with a flyer. Don't forget to send out email reminders to friends and coworkers.

    4.       Collect nutritious, non-perishable canned and packaged foods. (No glass, please!)

    5.       Prepare your donation for pick-up or delivery by boxing food in medium-sized boxes (approximately the size of copier paper boxes). Please limit the weight of each box to no more than 40 pounds for easy handling. Remember: if you can't lift the box, we can't lift the box!

    6.       Collect money, too! We' ll send you donation envelopes – for those who prefer to give money instead of food. Every dollar donated provides four meals! Checks can be mailed individually or as a group – just make sure your organization's name is on the envelope so we know what food drive the donation came from. Donations can be sent to:
