For Immediate Release by the Foodbank of the Virginia Peninsula:

Feinstein Foundation Offers Another $1 Million Challenge To Help Fight Hunger For the tenth straight year, the Alan Shawn Feinstein Foundation in Rhode Island will divide $1 million among non-profit agencies throughout the country helping to fight hunger, using it to help them raise funds during this coming March and April 2007.

Each participating agency will get their share of the $1 million equal to their proportion of the total amount raised by all participants. Agencies wishing to share in this $1 million should simply relay this news to their donors, stating that the more of a donation they make to their agency--from March 1st to April 30th– the more of the Feinstein money will be added to their donation!

Many agencies say that using the Feinstein challenge offer in their mail and/or telephone solicitations has increased their donations two or three times their usual returns! Only cash, checks, or food item donations received from March 1st to April 30th using the Feinstein challenge should be reported. Food items should be valued at $1.00 per item or per pound for reporting purposes. Agencies participating in the Feinstein challenge should fill out and send us the simple report sheet below, showing the total they raised from March 1st to April 30th this year using our challenge, with copies of any publicity they received about it and a copy of their federal tax-exemption (501C3) or proof of affiliation with a tax-exempt organization.

The Feinstein million dollars will then be divided proportionately among all agencies complying with the above, and their checks will be mailed to them by June 30th from the R.I. Foundation, which contributes $125,000 and in-kind services annually to the Feinstein Challenge.

Feinstein’s past $1million challenges to fight hunger have raised $250 million to date for over 3000 agencies nationwide. This has become the most successful grassroots effort ever to fight hunger in America. *Schools wishing to collect food and or money for their local anti-hunger agencies toward this challenge must deliver it to them during March or April, telling them to apply it to the Feinstein Challenge.

There are 50 $1000 cash awards and national recognition for the schools making the best efforts! They should write us the first week in May, stating their total enrollment, what they raised and to whom it were given. Winning schools will be notified the end of May.

Report on Donations Received in Response To the Feinstein March/April 2004, $1 Million Challenge Feinstein Center for a Hunger Free America Planning A Food Drive.

 1. Plan Ahead:

Contact your local food bank 596-7188 ,we can supply barrels and/or plastic/paper bags for food collections. Also, they can let you know what items are most needed at the time of your food drive.

Select a recipient(s) to receive your donations –this can be your local foodbank THE FOODBANK OF THE VIRGINIA PENINSULA  that provides food or meals to the needy. Determine how many of the following items you will need: Collection barrels, bags –grocery stores are often willing to donate bags for the collection. Posters, fliers –to generate awareness of hunger issue and food drive (see Facts & Figures, for some statistics on hunger).

Donation envelopes - for those wishing to make monetary donation. Select a committee to organize the food drive and delegate responsibilities.

 2. Establish Basics:

Create a theme! Make it FUN! Themes often help generate excitement around a food drive and aid in the creation of promotional materials (see Food Drive Theme Ideas). Set beginning and end dates for the drive. Determine collection sites and who will deliver items to your recipient(s) at the end of the drive. Set a goal for how much food and/or money to collect (i.e. one million pennies, total weight of students = pounds of food to collect, certain number of bags of groceries). Communicate above information to all participants.

 3. Promote:

The Food Drive Create promotional materials that will help build awareness about hunger issues, your food drive, and encourage maximum participation. Hold contests for designing posters and fliers. Tap into the creativity available in your school. Include food drive information in take-home notices, school newsletters and calendars. Notify your local community centers, churches, libraries, and the media about your event. Distribute flyers and posters around your community. Afterwards, announce the results of your collection efforts to your community. Use slogans that relate to your school and the food drive. Mark your progress with a thermometer or tally board –especially if the drive is longer than one day.

 4. Educate:

The Participants To increase the awareness of hunger issues try one of these ideas: Incorporate ideas from Hunger 101 curricula (see Curriculum Ideas as service learning projects. Arrange for a food bank representative to come to your school, take a field trip to their site, or schedule a volunteer day at a local anti-hunger agency. 5. Show Your Appreciation Recognize committee members, participants, sponsors and volunteers for their hard work. Host a pizza party or ice cream social in their honor! Have students create hand-made thank you notes.

  Alan Shawn Feinstein,  Founder

Alan Shawn Feinstein , founder of the Feinstein Foundation, is a nationally known philanthropist and humanitarian. He has made an indelible impact on American education and public service that has spread throughout the country.
With a college background in both journalism and education, Mr. Feinstein taught public schools in Massachusetts and Rhode Island and established an English school in Thailand after a private audience with the king. He later entered the business world, starting a financial advisory newspaper column and private newsletter in 1974 with $500 in savings. His newsletters went on to become among the most widely circulated in the world, reaching a readership of over 500,000. He credits his great circulation to a man he never met - an Indian doctor and world traveler who liked Mr. Feinstein's newspaper column so much that he got it into newspapers in many countries. He has also authored several best-selling financial guides, a novel and several books for children. A book was written about him and the value of his advice: The Four Treasures of Alan Shawn Feinstein, published by Prentice-Hall in 1984.
Since 1996, he has dedicated his full time to philanthropic endeavors, focusing on the advancement of public service and the alleviation of hunger. He founded the World Hunger Program at Brown University, the first university center to study and try to end the causes of hunger, launched the World Hunger Brigade, a program which encourages middle school students to study hunger and design programs to fight it, the Feinstein International Famine Center at Tufts University which carries out projects designed to help reduce hunger in countries around the world, and the Center for Hunger Free America at the University of Rhode Island.
His commitment to the schools in the State of Rhode Island is legendary. He has dedicated millions of dollars to its elementary and secondary schools, and to its colleges and universities, to advance the importance of community service in education and the values of caring, compassion and brotherhood. He was also instrumental in the establishment of the first public high school ever to have community service as its central theme (the Feinstein High School in Providence, Rhode Island) and the first college program to offer a degree in this field (the Feinstein Institute at Providence College). His motto, " Helping to better the lives of others is the greatest of all achievements" is on all high schools and middle school buildings in Providence.
Among the many honors he has received are the American Historical Society’s Distinguished Services Award, the American Red Cross Longfellow Humanitarian Award, the first Rhode Island Citizen of the Year Award by the March of Dimes Foundation and the first humanitarian award given by his hometown of Cranston. He has been named to the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame, has received the prestigious President’s Medal from Brown University and Rhode Island College, and honorary doctorate degrees from Providence College, Salve Regina University, Johnson and Wales University, Roger Williams University, Rhode Island College, the University of Rhode Island and the New England Institute of Technology. He recently founded the Citizenship Center at the International Institute of Rhode Island, and is honorary chairman of the International Scholar/Athlete Games, where his "Enriching the World" Program is a requisite for all participants from all countries. He also has given start-up funds to over 200 houses of worship throughout the country to start food pantries available to everyone in need in their communities regardless of their religious affiliation.
As well as the Feinstein High School in Rhode Island, several other schools have been named for him including the Graduate School of Johnson & Wales University , the College of Arts and Science at Roger Williams University, the College of Education at Rhode Island College, the College of Continuing Education at the University of Rhode Island and two elementary schools.
Mr. Feinstein believes that "Helping to better the lives of others, regardless of race, creed or color, is the greatest of all achievements."

Mr. Feinstein has been married for over 40 years to Dr. Pratarnporn Feinstein, a psychiatrist and native of Bangkok, Thailand. They have three children Ari, Ricky, and Leila Feinstein and three grandchildren. Though Mr. Feinstein comes from a strictly Jewish background, his family now consists of Christians, Moslems and Buddhists and a mixture of all races.

Feinstein Offers Another $1 Million Giveaway

                             To Fight Hunger

For the tenth straight year, Alan Shawn Feinstein will divide $1 million among hunger fighting agencies nationwide using it to help them raise funds during March and April, 2007.

Agencies should simply inform their donors that the more of a donation they make to their agency - from March 1st to April 30th– the more of the Feinstein money will be added to their donation! Many agencies say that featuring this in their mailings and telephone solicitations has increased their donations two or three times their usual returns!  Only donations received from March 1st to April 30th, and from use of the Feinstein challenge, should be counted.  These donations can include cash, checks and food items (that can be valued at $1.00 per item or pound) as well as pledges, as long as they were obtained ONLY in response to our challenge.

Participating agencies should send in the enclosed reporting sheet, showing the total they raised from March 1st to April 30th, 2007 from use of our challenge, with copies of any publicity they received about it, and copies of their mailing piece(s) featuring our challenge, plus a copy of their federal tax-exemption (501C3) or proof of affiliation with a tax-exempt organization –all sent by regular mail in one envelope postmarked May 1st   to May 9th, 2007 only, to: The Feinstein Foundation, 37 Alhambra Circle, RI 02905.  Nothing else is required.  Please keep a record of what you raised and from whom should verification be requested!

Feinstein’s past $1 million challenges to fight hunger have raised a record $620 million for agencies nationwide. Here is how you can use the Feinstein $1 million challenge to bring you in more donations than ever before:

1.        Feature our offer in your next solicitation mailing, per the next paragraph.  The more prominently you feature it, the more donations it will bring you!

2.        Tell your donors that any donations they send to you in March or April will get Feinstein money from Rhode Island added to it –and the more of a donation they send to you, the more of the Feinstein $1 million you’ll get –thanks to them!  Also tell them they become partners in what has become the most successful campaign of all times to fight hunger!

3.        Contact your local houses of worship and ask them to give this news to their congregations, requesting donations toward it.

4.        Use the enclosed letter from Mr. Feinstein in your mailing.  This can increase your response dramatically!  Send it to as many of your donors and prospective donors as you can. If you have to make new envelopes for your mailing, put a line in bold on them reading: ‘Have you ever heard of Alan Shawn Feinstein?’ and reference our $1 million giveaway right at the top of the first piece in your mailing. It should increase your returns substantially.

5.        Call your newspapers and radio stations to find out to whom to send copies of our enclosed news release (adding your agency’s name, address, and telephone number to it) and telling them that by publicizing it, they will be helping the needy people in their area. Also send a letter about it to the editor of your daily newspaper.

6.        Send this news to your email list urging them to join with us as partners in this #1 grassroots campaign of all times to fight hunger –and to pass the news on to their e-mail list!

7.        Contact all the schools near you, asking them to put on a food and or money drive for you toward our $1 million challenge. Value all food items they give you at $1.00 each when reporting what you raised in response to our challenge. Tell your donors that this makes them partners in the greatest grassroots effort ever to fight hunger.

8.        Feature our $1 Million Challenge on your website and link to our site (www.feinsteinfoundation.org) so your donors can verify our credibility.

Good luck!  And thank you for all you do for those who need you.

Please use MY money to help

 your neighbors in need!

My name is Alan Shawn Feinstein. For the past 9 years, I have been giving away $1 million each year to anti-hunger agencies throughout the country.

This year, I am doing it again…

WHATEVER YOU DONATE TO THIS AGENCY,

I WILL ADD MONEY TO IT. THE MORE

YOU GIVE, THE MORE OF MY $1 MILLION

THEY’LL GET—THANKS TO YOU!

Why am I doing this? Because I believe each of us was put here on earth to do what we can to help those in need. You got this letter because we feel that YOU believe that, too.

This has become the greatest grass roots campaign ever to fight hunger in our country. Your donation makes you a partner in it with me!

My money started this campaign but it is YOU who will help decide how many needy people in your city or town will be fed this year. I’m only here to give you some support and to remind you of this:  That all that will matter to us someday is what we did while we were here to help those who needed us.

                                                       We Are Needed Now!

Please give whatever you can - I will gladly add some of my money to yours.  My $1 million will be divided in full proportionately among

the agencies receiving donations toward my offer.

Thank you for sharing my heart, and the hope that—someday—no one will ever go hungry.

Sincerely Yours,

       Alan Shawn Feinstein
