Foluké Artistic Staff

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

DAVA A. CANSLER holds a Bachelor of General Studies with a concentration in Computer and Administrative Science from Kent State University. As a child, she received a tremendous amount of exposure to the arts: dance, visual arts, instrumental, and vocal music. She mastered several musical instruments self-taught, and studied violin under the direction of the late Hyman Schandler, conductor of the Cleveland Womens Orchestra, and member of the world renowned Cleveland Orchestra. It was under Mr. Schandler's tutelage that Ms. Cansler became a member of the All-City Orchestra, The Supplementary Educational Center Orchestra, The Mount Pleasant Orchestra, and a member of a string ensemble that won numerous awards an recognitions; all between Junior High and High School.

Ms. Cansler has received instruction in non-profit management through attending various workshops sponsored by the Cleveland Foundation and Neighborhood Connections, a subsidiary of The Cleveland Foundation.  Ms. Cansler represented another non-profit organization in the first year of the Project Access program for Faith-Based organizations, through the Cleveland Foundation in 2005.  She is currently a member of the Central Family to Family Collaborative and the Coordinating Council of Youth Development.
 

EDUCATION CONSULTANT

DEBORAH M. CAMPBELL, PhD.,   Recently completed her Ph.D. at Kent State University in the area of Curriculum and Instruction. Her dissertation is entitled “Case study: Entry-year elementary teachers’ perceptions of their professional development”. She has a masters degree in education from Kent State University in curriculum and instruction and a Bachelor’s of science degree in Intervention specialist also from Kent State University. She has thirteen years of teaching experience. She is a native of the Bahamas where she also served as Co-youth Director for the Central Andros District and Chair of Youth and Culture of the Central Andros Community Association. She also served as the executive member and advisor of the Junior Achievement program in Central Andros, Bahamas for 5 years. She believes in community school partnerships and since coming to school, she serves as a volunteer for the Junior Achievement program in Ohio, the Education Chair and executive board member of Thomas Anderson Development Corporation, Kent, Ohio from September 2004 to the present and organized one-week summer school programs in the areas of math and reading since 2005 in Kent, Ohio. She also serves as Youth Director of Union Baptist Church.

A part from working as a graduate assistant in the College of Education for many years, she has also worked as a graduate assistant in the Research Center for Educational technology for two years from May 2006 to May 2008. Deborah has also worked as a resident manager of Allerton Student Housing from July 2002 to July 2008 and organized numerous programs in which she has won numerous awards. She was awarded the Resident Manager of Distinction Award, Resident Service, Kent State University, for the years 2006 and 2008. She has also won the Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities & Colleges, Kent State University 2005. Deborah has been instrumental in spearheading the drive to establish the International Resource Center which began in spring 2004 located at Allerton Students Housing. She was also President and founding member of A.L.L. (Allerton Leading Ladies) at Kent State University in spring 2003. She is a member of Member of Phi Delta Kappa and Member of Phi Beta Delta since April 2004.

      She has also held numerous positions in the Association for International Students in Education at Kent State University including president in 2005. Deborah has co-published six research articles and attended and presented at numerous educational conferences. She resides in Kent, Ohio with her daughter.

DRAMA

MR STEPHEN HOOD holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communications Speech & Theatre, with a Minor in Dance from Baldwin Wallace College, and has vast experience in the development and implementation of drama programs for youth.  Mr. Hood has served as an instructor for The Rainey Institute, Cleveland Public Theatre, and Young Audiences.  In addition to his enthusiasm and energy as an instructor, Mr. Hood brings forth his experience as an accomplished performer/director.  Mr. Hood has performed in Karamu productions such as “Jelly’s Last Jam”, “Joy to My Soul”, “Dreamgirls”, “Three Penny Opera”, and “In the Wine Time” and productions in the Berea Summer Theater such as: “West Side Story”, “Cabaret”, “Hasty Heart”, and many more.  Mr. Hood’s directing experience includes Karamu Theater – Shadow Box; Great Lakes Shakespeare Festival – antonym and Cleopatra; Chgrin Valley Little Theater – Pippin; Cain Park – Houdini; Playhouse Square/State Theater – Black Navity and many more.  Mr. Hood has done Film and Radio Voice Overs for Warner Brother Productions, United Artists, American Red Cross, Chi Chi’s Restaurant and National City Bank.

VISUAL ART

MS. KOLE ROBINSON is a skilled visual artist and educator.  Kolé holds an Associate Degree from Cuyahoga Community College in Photography/Graphic Design, A Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Fiber/Material Studies from The Cleveland Institute of Art, and is presently attending Notre Dame College, participating in their TEEL program to receive teaching licensure in Visual Art.  Most recently Kolé has completed her student teaching at Cleveland School of the Arts under the sponsorship of Danny Carver.  Kolé has worked on various projects with SANKOFA Fine Arts organization, Art House, Inc., and the Cleveland Public Library, just to name a few.  Kolé has served as Art Instructor for Karamu House after school programs, The Cleveland Institute of Art, and Passport Program, Inc.

MR. 'ARAAMAN' ALVIN FUDGE is a skilled artist, educator, consultant, writer, and motivational speaker.  He has served as program director for the Newark, New; Jersey Boy's and Girl's Club, educational assistant with the California Museum of Science and Industry, and was a field member of the State of California's Task Force on Self-Esteem. He has traveled the world and currently is the president and CEO of Transformational FUN Workshops and Filmworks, home of Agape' International Peace ARTS Center, and GOCARTS (Gallery of Children's ARTS and Learning Academy, a mobile intergenerational arts based healing program for all ages) located in Cleveland, Ohio, USA.

Araaman has developed many innovative workshops that focus on personal growth, quality work performance, self-esteem, self-transformation, eliminating racism, building community, and art and creativity as a force in children, families, and communities.

DANCE

LAUREN CANSLER, is a graduate of Wayne State University, with a BS in Dance Education, and a K-12 Certification.  Lauren will be teaching at Nataki Talibah Schoolhouse of Detroit in the Fall, and will be only available for summer workshops.   Lauren is a Foluké Alumna, having received over 3 years of dance training under the tutelage of Mr. Terence Greene.  Lauren has received instruction in Classical Ballet, Modern Dance (Horton and Graham Techniques), Jazz and African Dance, Improvisation, Dance Production and Choreography.  She has studied dance at Karamu for 1 year, 4 years with Duffy Lit Studio, 1 year with Michael Metcalf and the Cleveland Contemporary Dance Theater and Beck Center for the Performing Arts. As a member of the DuffyLit Teen Ensemble, Lauren performed in Paris, France; Barcelona, Spain and Sydney, Australia in the 2000 Olympics. She danced with the Follower’s of David Liturgical Dance Ministry of Lane Metropolitan CME Church for 6 years and performed with Foluké and The Cleveland School of the Arts collaborative concerts..  In the Follower’s of David, Lauren served as the Choreographer and Rehearsal Director. Lauren has also attended Intensive training with the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, International Association of Blacks in Dance Conference, National Dance Educators Organization, and the American College Dance Festival Association. MS. LISA THOMAS, began dancing at a very young age, and was influenced greatly by her grandmother Allie B Thomas, who started her dance school in the basement of her own home. Lisa began studying Ballet, Jazz, Modern, Tap, and Acrobatics there.  She received scholarships with Ballet Guild of Cleveland, The School of American Ballet in New York, Alvin Ailey School of New York, and was a company member with Joel Hall Dancers of Chicago, Il. Ms. Thomas has taught all types of dance classes to children of all ages, as well as adults. Her most recent appointments have been as an instructor of beginning to intermediate Ballet with CONSORT of Cleveland Contemporary Dance Theatre, and Foluke’ Cultural Arts Center.
