Six Components of the Kids On Ice® Program:
This class is designed for skaters of all levels. Students are tested at the end of each session and progress to the next skating level as they pass each test. Emily Mayer, a PSA certified, professional skating instructor, oversees this class. Volunteers assist with teaching. All volunteers are skilled skaters. This program follow the US Figure Skating Association curriculum and testing standards. No previous skating experience is required to take this class.
2) Instructional Ice Hockey
This class is designed for skaters wishing to learn how to play hockey. Joel Layton, a professional hockey instructor, oversees this class. Volunteer assistants are skilled hockey players. Instructors follow the USA Hockey curriculum and testing standards. Participants must have completed at least one Learn to Skate session and be at least seven (7) years old to register for Instructional Ice Hockey. Participants must provide their own mouth guard and athletic cup.
This class is designed for skaters wishing to learn how to speed skate, and eventually, to compete. Coach Chris Callis is the head coach. Volunteer assistants, under the direction of Chris, follow the US Speed Skating curriculum and teaching standards. Interested students may also join DC ICE, the Fort Dupont speed skating club. As students progress to an elite level, they will have the opportunity to participate in area competitions. Participants must have completed at least one Learn to Skate session and be at least seven (7) years old to register for Speed Skating.
4) Advanced Figure Skating
This class is designed for skaters who have already mastered basic skating and are ready to learn freestyle figure skating elements. Emily Mayer, a PSA certified, professional skating instructor, oversees this class. The class follows the US Figure Skating Association curriculum and testing standards. Classes include off-ice and on-ice instruction. Children must pass skating tests of a specific level to participate in this class.
The ice arena is available to area public schools during school hours. Many schools make use of this opportunity to bring classes once or twice during the year for a skating field trip. Other schools are able to bring physical education classes on a weekly or monthly basis. Skating instructors and skate guards are provided for these sessions.
Friends of Fort Dupont works with many area summer camps to incorporate ice skating into their curriculum. Several camps, including D.C. Department of Parks and Recreation, bring classes on a regular, weekly basis. Other camps bring their students once or twice during the summer for a skating field trip. Skating instructors and skate guards are provided for these sessions.
