| SUPPORT GROUPS
From its beginning in 1985, the Council has held support groups for parents, grandparents and siblings. It has also formed support groups for short periods of time for families with specific needs such as for parents whose children are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Groups are "customized" to the participants' needs. Parents of school age children have held separate support group meetings from parents of adults in order to address the unique concerns of each group. Some support groups have been presented for limited time spans, such as the Sibling Support meetings. Some groups continue for many years. The grandparents have been meeting on a monthy basis since 1995, taking turns hosting Sunday brunch and conversation in each other's homes. Support group meetings often feature a speaker on a topic related to disability issues. Members of the Council staff or Professional Advisory Board provide professional facilitation of the meeetings.
