SUMMER CAMP INCLUSION

The first service offered by the Council was to provide the necessary support system for inclusion in the local Jewish community center summer day camp. To this day, summer camp inclusion is a priority for this agency. In early spring, the Council advertises their assistance to parents in determining if their child is ready for camp, what supports are needed for successful inclusion and informing parents of possible camps. The Council's Camp Inclusion Consultant meets with camp directors to discuss the Council's assistance in preparing for a child with special needs, interviewing and training camp counselors to provide help in the camp group, as well as oversight of campers and counselors during the summer and other resources. The Council offers Disability Awareness Workshops both to the camp staff and, during the summer, to the typical campers in order to dispel myths and nurture friendships. The Council pays the salaries of special counselors as needed at each camp. The camp inclusion resources are funded in part by the Morris Asher Memorial Camp Fund.

The Council For Jews With Special Needs is a constituent agency of the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix: www.jewishphoenix.org
