KESHET SOCIAL GROUP
For Teens and Young Adults Who Have Disabling Conditions
In 1999, the Council For Jews With Special Needs created Keshet social group for teens and young adults, ages 14 and above who have moderate to severe developmental, physical and sensory disabilities. The group’s goals were to (1) provide a gathering place to meet and participate in activities with peers who have special needs and “typical” peers and to (2) enhance their Jewish identity through religious, cultural, educational and social programs.
The group meets twice a month for a wide variety of activities including:
Shabbat programs Jewish Traditions Prayers & Rituals
Holiday crafts Holiday Baking Chanukah Parties
Purim Parties Passover Seders Bowling
Music & Movement Game Day Pottery Painting
Tzedakah Projects Health & Fitness Mitzvah Day
A special education teacher directs the group. Teenage and adult volunteers participate each month and offer both friendship and role models for the group members. Various synagogues and other Jewish organizations often provide volunteers to join Keshet members on their outings. Members pay for the cost of their activities and any special supplies for art or cooking projects. They are expected to provide their own transportation to and from activities.
The New Shul hosts the Keshet Group meetings.
