Kids Against Violence

In the summer of 2008 the kids of Centro Romero’s Youth Learning and Leadership Program decided to take the lead and take action against violence in their neighborhood. The Power of Words or the POW Program was a 10 week program designed to teach the kids about peaceful conflict resolution. These courageous kids took a program that was geared to address more personal conflicts such as bullies and gossip, to another level when they agreed to participate in this anti-violence march through their neighborhood.

They learned songs and practiced the chants of prior marches for change. They painted signs and raised their voices in the name of PEACE. They promoted families over gangs and peace over violence and demonstrated to the neighborhood and the adults who supervised the program, what Gandhi meant when he said, “Be the change you wish to see in this world.”

Each kid designed and painted a panel on a PEACE mural, which now hangs in the halls of Centro Romero.  Though the adults implemented this program to educate the kids, it was the kids who taught us that peace resides in all our hearts and it is we who choose, at times, to ignore it.  Join our kids in their celebration of PEACE by watching their videos and sharing the LOVE.
