Scholarships from $500 to $5,000 are awarded to current, incoming, and graduating students.  They are selected based on their academic excellence, accomplishments, and in some cases, financial need or personal circumstances.  The awards included 20 new scholarships presented for the first time that evening including the Karyn Van Kirk Memorial Scholarship, Orenda Wildlife Land Trust Scholarship, and College Connection Scholarships.  For a complete list of the 2009 awards and their recipients,  click here.

Presentations were announced by Richard Rand, Chairperson of the Cape Cod Community College Educational Foundation, and Philip Sisson, Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs.  Professor Michael Olendzenski, the 2008 recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award, was the honored faculty speaker.  Kenneth McGourty-Pimental, Class of 2009, of West Tisbury spoke on behalf of all the scholarship recipients expressing what scholarship assistance means to them.

The Third Annual Bartlett Awards were presented to:

Professor Nancy Shearer in the amount of $1,500.  Professor Shearer will apply this $1,500 award toward completing studies in a Specialty "Teaching Technology in Education" Master's Degree program.  With this second Master's Degree in Education, Professor Shearer aims to be a mentor to campus faculty interested in teaching courses online known as "distance learning" and "hybrid" courses -- a combination of online learning and traditional classroom instruction.  To date, Professor Shearer has created three online dental hygiene courses, and plans to produce a sample hybrid course this fall on dental radiology.

Professor Debra Murphy in the amount of $1,000.  Professor Murphy will present at the 18th National Association for the Education of Young Children National Institute for Early Childhood Professional Development conference in North Carolina next month.  Professor Murphy is only one of two distinguished Faculty Leadership Fellows selected by the Conference.  Her conference presentation is entitled "Assessing Learning through Play:  Exploring Materials and Contexts in Pre-service Teacher Education."
