SAN RAFAEL'S CANAL NEIGHBORHOOD TO CELEBRATE "DIA DE LOS MUERTOS"
Wonderful music and dancing, a display of art projects,
traditional food, a procession and more will be part of the 21st annual
celebration of the Día de los Muertos (the "Day of the Dead") in San
Rafael's Canal Neighborhood. The main events will take place in Pickleweed Park Community Center
on Saturday, November 7th at 4:00PM
The Day of the Dead is a happy holiday. It is when the Mexican
and Central American families both remember their dead loved ones and celebrate
the continuity of life. Bright flowers, music, colorful decorations and
seasonal sweets are characteristic of the day.
This year in San Rafael,
the Día de los Muertos festivities will include a display of "altars"
created by individuals, families, schools, community groups and non-profit
organizations. The Altars are dedicated to a lost loved one followed the Latin
American tradition most closely; however, altar-like creations devoted to
causes, or victims of historical events, or to an issue of social justice, are also
welcomed by the organizers.
This year’s event is organized and sponsored by The Canal
Welcome Center, the City of San Rafael, Kids Club (CYO), the San Rafael Public Library, local artists, schools,
community groups, and lots of volunteers.
