  21st Annual Día de los Muertos "Day of the Dead 2009"

September 24, 2009

Dear Honored Community Member,

It is our pleasure to invite you to be a part of our wonderful community celebration, Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). This 21st annual community event will take place on Saturday, November7, 2009 from 4pm to 9:00pm at the Pickleweed Park Community Center in the Canal Neighborhood of San Rafael.

This event includes entertainment, a procession, art, family time, storytelling, dancing, food, and display of over two dozen beautiful altars.

Create an altar! We are currently signing up individuals, families, schools, community groups and a limited number of non-profits to create altars to display at the event. Traditionally, altars are dedicated to family members or lost loved ones. It may also be appropriate to dedicate an altar to causes or groups of people victims of historical events or diseases, or groups of people. Altars are allowed table, floor and wall space if desired. Just complete the enclosed Altar Application to get started!

This is an exciting opportunity. Thousands of people attend this event. It is very powerful and meaningful venue to discuss death, and celebrate life.

Other ways to participate:

*        Volunteer at the event

*       Have your group be in the procession! It is like a parade down Canal Street

*       Attend! Spread the word. Request posters and flyers.

*        Becoming a sponsor

Call (415) 526-2486 for more information or if you are interested in participating any way. We will send you additional information with event posters and fliers. More specific directions for constructing an altar I a traditional manner are also available. Thank you and we look forward to seeing you again this year!

SAN RAFAEL'S CANAL NEIGHBORHOOD TO CELEBRATE "DIA DE LOS MUERTOS"

Wonderful music and dancing, a display of art projects, traditional food, a procession and more will be part of the 21st annual celebration of the Día de los Muertos (the "Day of the Dead") in San Rafael's Canal Neighborhood. The main events will take place in Pickleweed Park Community Center on Saturday, November 7th at 4:00PM

The Day of the Dead is a happy holiday. It is when the Mexican and Central American families both remember their dead loved ones and celebrate the continuity of life. Bright flowers, music, colorful decorations and seasonal sweets are characteristic of the day.

This year in San Rafael, the Día de los Muertos festivities will include a display of "altars" created by individuals, families, schools, community groups and non-profit organizations. The Altars are dedicated to a lost loved one followed the Latin American tradition most closely; however, altar-like creations devoted to causes, or victims of historical events, or to an issue of social justice, are also welcomed by the organizers.

This year’s event is organized and sponsored by The Canal Welcome Center, the City of San Rafael, Kids Club (CYO), the San Rafael Public Library, local artists, schools, community groups, and lots of volunteers.
