About St. Charles
St. Charles was founded in 1769 as Les Petites Cotes ("The Little Hills") by French Canadian fur trader Louis Blanchette. The Spanish government controlled the Mississippi Valley between 1762-1800, and for a dozen years "The Little Hills" became "San Carlos Borromeo." In 1804, on the banks of the mighty Missouri River, Lewis and Clark met here to begin their westward expedition. Shortly thereafter, the city became known as "Saint Charles." In this historic city you will find the newly-constructed Embassy Suites St. Louis - St. Charles MO hotel along with these other items of interest.

First Missouri State Capitol
St. Charles was Missouri's first state capitol between 1821 and 1826, while a permanent capitol city was in the planning and development stages in Jefferson City. The Federal-style brick complex was restored between 1961 and 1971, and features 11 rooms that take you back to the time when Missouri joined the Union.

Lewis & Clark Boat House and Museum
Almost 200 years ago two brave men launched one of the most amazing adventures of all time. President Thomas Jefferson asked Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to find a route to the Pacific coast. You may know them as the famous Lewis & Clark.

In 1804, they left from Saint Charles to explore new lands from Saint Charles to the Pacific Ocean. During their journey, Lewis and Clark came face-to-face with many wild animals, discovered unknown plants and encountered many Indian cultures. The Lewis and Clark Museum is a great place to learn more about the path Lewis and Clark took. The trading post is filled with the unusual Indian artwork they found during their travels.

The Lewis & Clark Boat House and Nature Center is the Discovery Expedition's permanent home. Situated beside the Missouri River at Bishop's Landing in charming historic St. Charles, Missouri, the educational facility features exhibits relating to the Lewis and Clark expedition, historic St. Charles, and the Missouri River ecosystem. When not on the river, the Discovery Expedition's hand-crafted replica boats will be on display on the building's lower level, where they can be easily removed during floods. The building's flow-through design will permit the flood waters to pass through the open lower level without damage to the structure or the museum on the upper level. On the upper level, the contents of the former Lewis & Clark Center (a certified site on the Lewis & Clark National Historic Trail) are displayed along with many new exhibits. The new facility has a classroom to accommodate our many class field trips, elderhostel groups, and tours. In addition, there will be ongoing living history demonstrations. Our museum shop, The Trading Post, has a wide selection of books along with interesting and unusual gift items.

Downtown Shopping District
A unique place for dining, shopping, entertainment, and attractions, Main Street has long been the hub of commercial activity for St. Charles. The 13-block stretch of downtown St. Charles runs from Boone’s Lick Road to Clark, and boasts a bevy of shops, restaurants and businesses.   Come stroll the sidewalks that line real brick streets, have lunch at one of the quaint restaurants and shop a wide variety of stores for crafts and antiques.
