Freedom House Living Skill Groups
Intro to Computers
Familiarizes residents with the basic functions of the computer (basic
computer keys, settings and functions.) Residents will learn the
importance and use of programs such as Microsoft Word and Internet
Explorer. Residents will be able to use these programs without
difficulty to design a resume and surf the web with ease.
Mommy & Me
Focuses on facilitating developmentally appropriate play between Mother
and Children in a safe and nurturing environment. Play activities will
be used to increase attachment in the mother-and-child relationship.
Creating structured play time while OTS models age-appropriate child
interactions will improve family’s quality of life while residing at a
DV shelter and beyond.
Coping Skills
Assists residents in becoming aware of the issues in their lives,
identify how they deal with them and to find healthy ways to cope with
the stress and frustration that comes along with. Residents will learn
new and practical coping strategies to replace their current unhealthy
strategies for managing everyday problems.
Home Management
Residents learn the skills needed to live independently. Topics such as
money management, time management, safety, and home maintenance are
discussed. By the time the residents move they will be able to manage
their household, budget their money, identify safety hazards in the
home, organize and create a weekly schedule of chores and necessary
appointments.
Freedom Spa
Encourages wellness and socialization between residents. Residents
learn the importance of good nutrition, hygiene and presentation. The
group will incorporate grooming, manicure and different tips on
self-care while being in a relaxing and supportive environment.
Cooking Group
Takes place weekly in the training kitchen. Residents will learn how to
become independent in the kitchen setting through cooking while
learning the importance of healthy cooking and nutrition. Possible
hazards are identified, as well as need for equipment and assistive
devices. In this group, residents will be oriented to the FH
convection oven, stovetop and microwave and in meal preparation.
Leisure Group
Assists residents with leisure exploration and encourages
socialization. This group will allow residents to explore leisure
activities in the community as well as to try various arts, crafts and
hobbies that can be performed at their leisure. Leisure activities
that are family oriented are covered as well.
Travel Training
Assists residents to allow travel in NYC independently and devises
customized strategies to teach travel skills that address the specific
needs of people with disabilities. Travel training within the
community is essential because transportation provides us all with
access to the wider opportunities of society such as employment,
postsecondary education, job training programs, recreation. Traveling
by public transportation systems such as bus and subway enables us to
go to work and come home, go to school or other training programs,
visit friends, take care of daily needs such as grocery shopping, and
enjoy recreational activities.
