The Occupational Therapy Internship Program
The Occupational Therapy (OT) internship program is designed to provide interns with exposure to the psychosocial issues that are unique to individuals living with a disability. Interns are exposed to the philosophy that individuals with disabilities who are homeless and/or are domestic violence survivors have specific emotional concerns and overall healthcare needs. Throughout their 10-12 week fieldwork experience, interns are exposed to the lives of consumers often full of complexities related to living in the shelter system, the disability, the trauma experienced, and hope and planning for the future. Interns experience and learn about non-traditional roles OT’s can play within the social model in contrast to a medical model. Interns are afforded the opportunity to cultivate ideas and alternative ways of providing treatment and styles of interventions. During this period, interns provide individualized services, administer functional assessments, develop client-centered plans and lead dynamic living skills groups under the supervision of a registered occupational therapist who guides interns as they attain entry-level skills.
