Barrier Free Living’s Non-Residential Domestic Violence Program (Secret Garden) has received the prestigious 2009 Mary Byron Project ‘Celebrating Solutions’ Award.

Celebrating over 28 years of service, Barrier Free Living (BFL) is dedicated to helping New Yorkers with disabilities live independently in the community.Our motto: "Helping People with Disabilities Help Themselves."


BFL provides a range of services and linkages to other community resources through our various programs, enabling individuals to overcome the obstacles that stand in the way of their living dignified, secure lives.

* Freedom House, a 44-apartment family emergency shelter for domestic violence survivors with disabilities and domestic violence survivors with children with disabilities;
NY1, NEW YORK CITY’S ACCLAIMED 24-HOUR NEWS-CHANNEL NAMES BARRIER FREE LIVING’S FREEDOM HOUSE “NEW YORKER OF THE WEEK”!

* The Secret Garden, a non-residential domestic violence intervention program providing case management, individual advocacy and safety planning for individuals with disabilities who have also experienced domestic violence;

* Transitional Housing, providing 24 single women and 24 single men with disabilities with shelter, case management, and independent living skills training and serving as the only program in New York Citywhere homeless people requiring the services of a homecare attendant can find shelter;

* Outreach Team, a program that reaches out to physically disabled homeless adults with mental illness and chemical addictions and provides to them information and referrals, case management, and housing assistance services.
