Agassiz Baldwin Community

HISTORY
The Agassiz Baldwin Community is located in a small area of Cambridge that has a population of approximately 5,000. Incorporated as a private, not for profit corporation in 1985, ABC was formerly part of the City of Cambridge Community Schools Program in the Department of Human Services. At its incorporation, ABC was granted a contract with the City of Cambridge to provide Community School services in the Agassiz (now Baldwin) School, a facility available after school hours for community use.

The ABC holds programs in three sites: the Baldwin School, 28 Sacramento Street; the Agassiz Community Center, 20 Sacramento Street; and North Hall , 1651 Massachusetts Avenue.

PURPOSE
As stated in the Articles of Incorporation, the ABC strives "to promote the health, safety and welfare of community members including development and operation of educational, recreational and cultural programs."

The mission is to provide a forum for discussion (via the Agassiz Neighborhood Council) and action (via Agassiz Baldwin Community programs) in the community.

MEMBERSHIP IN AGASSIZ NEIGHBORHOOD COUNCIL
Any person who lives in the Agassiz neighborhood, or whose children attend the Baldwin Public School or attend ABC programs, is automatically a member of the Agassiz Neighborhood Council. To vote at monthly council meetings, a member must have attended at least one meeting in the calendar year prior to voting.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS
The ABC has a 10-person board of directors who are elected for two-year terms. Two of the ten represent children's programs. There is a chairperson, vice chairperson, treasurer and clerk. A nominating committee submits a slate to the council each April which is approved in May at the Annual Meeting, on the third Tuesday of the month.
