American Bone Marrow Donor Registry

Mission
To educate and recruit an adequate, viable source of well-informed potential marrow donors and effectively maintain the associated donor records. To coordinate and process patient search requests rapidly and provide comprehensive assistance to patient and physician throughout the search process. To insure the privacy and confidentiality of both donors and patients. To minimize the costs associated with donor recruitment and the patient search process. To provide both donor and patient advocacy.

History

An effort in Louisiana in 1984 to assist one little boy and his family in their search for an unrelated marrow donor culminated in the formation of a donor center in that state. The incorporation of the American Bone Marrow Donor Registry, a tax-exempt, non-profit organization with 501(c)(3) status, was realized in 1985. The American Registry is responsible for donor education, recruitment, subsequent compatibility testing, and advocacy throughout the donor designation and harvest process. The donor division is composed of several donor centers which are responsible for donor recruitment and management in defined geographic areas and among specific heritages. Searches of the American Registry files are coordinated through the Caitlin Raymond International Registry which accesses nationally and internationally a total of approximately 6,000,000 donors.

Commitment

The American Registry is committed to keeping its donor files accessible to any medically viable candidate for a marrow transplant who is being treated at an accredited bone marrow transplant center meeting Federal and World Marrow Donor Association standards. The American Registry is committed to maintaining an ethnically diverse donor panel.
