Unity Rally

Founded in 1997 in response to the Ku Klux Klan rally in Greensburg, the purpose of the Unity Rally is to establish a mechanism for the community to become proactive and not reactive to acts of hatred and violence in our area.  The YWCA, in partnership with the Central Westmoreland Unity Coalition, sponsors the Annual Unity Rally.  The Central Westmoreland Unity Coalition is a grass roots membership organization led by organizations, businesses and citizens concerned about social justice.  The coalition brings people together to celebrate diversity in all walks of life in order to produce greater understanding and acceptance.  It promotes an acceptance of racial, social and religious differences on the part of the citizens of Westmoreland County.

The Unity Rally takes place each October, at St. Clair Park in Greensburg, and a specific theme is chosen each for year.  Themes such as "Erase Racism", "Beauty in Diversity" and "Imagine" have all been celebrated themes.  All groups (school, business, church, community, etc) and individuals are encouraged to attend the rally to promote unity and celebrate diversity.  Local students are encouraged to make pennants and banners to be displayed at the candlelight rally.  Several speakers make presentation to stress the importance of working towards the elimination of racism in Westmoreland County and across the globe. The rally is free and open to the public.

For additional information about the rally or to learn how you and  your organization can participate, contact the YWCA.
