Exposure 101
In Exposure 101 program, the youth are apprentices of Urban Sustain; they identify research and share the information on environmental toxins which plague the health of their community. The final project for each group is to provide community outreach to create awareness, provide information or supply solutions through various media, such as forums, public service announcements and speaking engagements, to name a few.
Exposure 101 works as a supplement to the current educational system to build social capital provide communication skills and gives the apprentices the ability to apply math and science to real life scenarios. The goal is to expose and mentor the underserved urban youth to create a network of civic minded citizens, “future” community activist, environmentalist and/or health educators.
The apprentices are exposed to careers alternatives, which are unique, attainable, rewarding and not highly publicized in their community, like industrial hygiene, public health education, advocacy and much more.
The apprenticeship a six week intense summer training and/or an eight week after school program.
Project Impact
Project Impact, are short term campaigns/initiatives and outreach which offer creative alternatives to address environmental and other issues which afflict urban neighborhoods. Urban Sustain acts as an advocate, resource and catalyst to the residents. The campaigns are designed to engage the affected population to mobilize, understand, connect and create actions to resolve the topic at the local level.
Community Coaches
The Community Coach program is an innovative community leadership training program for adults and youth. The community identifies environmental topics which are relevant to the improving the educational, political and health in their area. The Coaches create social change, contribute to community development and become community health leaders. Urban Sustain provides residents with a core set of knowledge and skills to become effective environmental health promoters in their communities.
