Welcome

The Other Parent was founded on the belief that children need both parents. We believe, in the absence of abuse or neglect, both parents have an equal right to legal and physical joint custody of their child. We also believe that both men and women should be held to the same financial obligation for care of their child. We have dedicated ourselves to serving the best interests of all children by advocating equality and accountability in the family court system.

We work toward this goal by providing information, referrals and support services to non-custodial parents. The Other Parent recognizes and works against bias in the system, but supports all parents who put their child first and want to protect their rights and relationship with their child, regardless of gender.

The facts on WA STATE Custoday awards over the last 9 months.
How does your county rate?

April 2008-Jan 20, 2009 case counts and time awards by county for counties with greater than 20 RTSR forms turned in.

Note that some counties that were in last year’s measurement have now completely dropped off the grid. Last year Cowlitz County who had zero 50/50 plans weighed in with 38 cases but this year only filed 15 RTSR forms so they are not even on this chart. Clear evidence of an imbalance is demonstrated by the fact that to the left of the 50/50 column where the father gets more time than the mother, there is only one county in one category out of 19 where there is even a double digit number. However on the right side of the 50/50 line where mothers get the majority of time, it is heavily weighted. This table clearly demonstrated children are being denied significant time with their fathers and their influence.

SUPREME COURT DISSOLUTION TASK FORCE

The Other Parent is fortunate to have had one of its representatives, Kevin Turner, picked by the governor to serve on the Washington State Dissolution Task Force. This is a key component of the state law passed in the 2007 legislative session to improve the dissolution statute. All of the task force work is based on 2SSB 5470, Laws of 2007, Chapter 496, §306.

Kevin’s contributions were centered on the domestic violence and sexual assault training for evaluators and dispute resolution subcommittees. Kevin was elected to be the chair of the training subcommittee. We believe there is a great opportunity to drive honest and open policies that balance the needs of all parties which is Kevin’s primary objective. If you have any particular concerns please contact Kevin at your earliest convenience. Kevin can be reached at: oldfrog@comcast.net. For more information on our activities within this task force please see our Dissolution Task Force page.
