| Grandparent Rights & Issues
In Oklahoma, about 45,000 grandparents are the primary caregivers of their grandchildren. Approximately one Oklahoma child out of every six is raised by a grandparent. These rates are significantly higher than national figures and are on the rise.
Grandparents face a range of legal issues, from gaining the right to visit grandchildren to obtaining the legal authority to deal with schools and health care providers for grandchildren in their custody.
The rights of grandparents are being recognized more each year. It is important for grandparents to understand their legal rights and options, but also to be aware that the law still strongly favors parental rights above all.
