La Casita first opened in April 1996 as a demonstration project funded by the federal government to provide substance abuse treatment for Latinas and their children. Since completion of the pilot project the program has been funded by L.A. County perinatal treatment monies and is a part of the California Perinatal Treatment Network. La Casita has a static capacity of 15 beds for women and15 beds for children. This six-month long residential program is bilingual and multi-cultural, with all services provided in English and/or Spanish. La Casita provides needs assessment, recovery and discharge planning, case management and service linkage, individual and group counseling substance abuse//HIV/STD/life skills education, parenting skills training, and assistance in achieving goals for self-sufficiency, including vocational preparation. A children’s component provides therapeutic counseling for children of La Casita residents. Two large forgivable loans from the California Emergency Housing and Assistance Program (EHAP) have facilitated the purchase and complete rehabilitation of this important shelter for women and their children.
